Downtown

I saw something yesterday that really upset me. 45 years ago, going Downtown every Friday night was the thing to do. That is where all the major stores were and when you needed something, anything; you went downtown. Through out the years I have repeatedly heard revitalize the Downtown. Well yesterday I had to attend a funeral of one of our choral buddies at St. Peters Church. As I walked down the middle of what was Downtown I was devastated. All of the Time and Monies that Salisbury has spent and it looked almost like a 3rd world country. Better than half of the Buildings were empty. It is nothing.

I’m wondering if this will be what the United States of America will look like when Obama and his leaguers get done with it.

People with Master Degrees can not get a job here. I’m beginning to wonder if I will ever be able to work gainfully earning a salary again. Also, the Mall or Center is empty. Walmart seems to be the only store with a majority of cars in front of it. This scares me. What do you think others notice or say as you are closer to the situation? Is this Mayor Barrie’s’ legacy?

I have been a Democrat since I registered over 38 years ago, well this week I changed my affiliation. I have had enough of the Democrats Democracy.

Anyone still believing in the Democrats agenda is either deaf dumb or just plain stupid or a crook.

The problems with Salisbury, (and the entirety of the Eastern Shore) can not be laid at the feet of one party or another. The reason this place is falling apart and offers no hope to anyone whatsoever is because of the people here.

The "from heres" oppose any change, and want a way of life that no longer exists. They will not offer help when others come along with ideas, and will rely on the "good ole' boy" network to keep things where they are now. Then, they will blame their problems on the "come heres" and the always prevalent "them" for ruining what was, at least in someone's dream, a perfect place to live.

Salisbury is a waste of space and time because the natives want it to be that way. If they wanted something different, they would do something about it.

"Walmart seems to be the only store with a majority of cars in front of it"

Where did you get a Master's degree?? I would think somewhere along the way at most institutions of higher education, they would teach you that this is not the proper use of the word majority.

no salisbury is not a waste of space there are developers who want to do things downtown (palmer gillis is one) but all we do is inject government entity upon government study. we have wasted time and money on touchy feely good time rock n roll studies. how much more money are we going to waste on experts. free markets will solve the problem. maybe the downtown will not be what it used to be but if you get the government out of the way (ie taxes, impact fees etc) and let the rich, profit seeking bad developers take a shot at downtown you might be surprised

Welcome Sister Wilma to the light of understanding. I too used to be a dem a long time ago. Then I went Rep now I am just me. Neither party gets it yet and I seriously doubt either will ever get it. We need someone who will go in there, evaluate the problem, give us a straight forward, truthful answer to our problems. I fear it is worse than anyone expects, but I have learned that true Americans will want to see the truth and then sacrifice what they need to in order to fix the problem. Look what some dems are doing now...trying to patch a round problem with a square fix. In order for it to fit, it needs ot be too small and will leak immediately and then quickly fail. Someone please, get in there and be honest with us. This liar-in-chief we have now just does not get it. He needs to go back and organize his own city again. Better yet, since he has stolen the office, I see he needs to get his own affairs better organized. We just need one good person to clean the house!!!!!

better late than never, Wilma.

Welcome home.

Exactly, that place was full of shops and stores during the 8 years of Bush. I still can't believe that they all have left since January. What is wrong with you people!

A wise man once said if your under 30 and not a Democrat you are heartless and if your over 30 years old and not a Republican you are brainless. Welcome to the age of enlightenment.

Downtown blight has been years..decades in the making. Obama's fault? I think not.

Goodbye and Good Riddance! I think your last sentence describes you perfectly. Turn on Beck and have a nice life.

I am doing the same thing. I am becoming a Republican and changing from Democrat as well.

Downtown is dead, its been dead for decades. No one wants to go down there because it is surrounded by Gen-Pop, its not safe and its ugly. The two societies dont want to mingle in the same meadow.

Excellent comments Wilma. I to was a Democrat and I will never vote for another Democrat as long as we have the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barack Obama, Barrie Tilghman, Gary Comegys and Jim Ireton in the same affiliation. These people and their followers are nothing more than a fraud. Yes Jim Ireton you fooled me and much of it is because you are a die hard Democrat. God Bless America!

not safe to park over there and walk, no thanks, people are crazy

Well that makes at least 4 converts to the ever shrinking Redumblican Party.

It takes effort sometimes to obtain the reach necessary to blame Obama for everything.
The downtown plaza is empty for years and it's somehow Obama's fault.
No one feels safe in the center of Salisbury anymore, that's the problem. It's not the Dems or the Republicans, but the Chief of Police who is responsible for the crime rate escalating. I work on the plaza, and look over my shoulder EVERY TIME I leave my office to go anywhere, including to my car at the end of the day.
When people can move about freely without fear, then they'll come back to downtown.

"I have been a Democrat since I registered over 38 years ago,"

Then you deserve some of the blame.

Jumping from one political party to another is not the saving grace this area needs. Leaving one group of misguided allies for another is not the answer. Whatever happened to supporting individual (how dare I saw the word "independent") causes. Support the ideas that you consider the best, do not support the ideas you consider worst. Don't jump into a group and do exactly what they do. Sounds like a completely crazy concept doesn't it??? Majority of our founding fathers were opposed to our government being ran by rivaling political parties.

Downtown was becoming a ghost town before January so don't even try that one. No one remembers the years under Barrie and what she did to Salisbury or should it be what she didn't do for Salisbury. If she had only tried to help the police dept with more officiers maybe people wouldn't be scared to go downtown. No, she wanted to kiss up to SFD which she did. They have that palace on the other side of the bridge. Think of what may of happened to Salisbury if Barrie had really cared about it. Now you have another mayor who only wants to stand in front of cameras and talk. Talk isn't helping. I'm glad I don't like in Salisbury. I do have fond memories of what it once was many years ago. A least a good decade ago!

Dogg,

Please explain any of your rambling post. How did Obama steal the office? I think you were thinking of 2001 in Florida. Is that what you were talking about because nothing else makes sense. And a round problem with a square fix, bravo sir or madam, bravo. And "liar in chief", no one can take you seriously.

There are three reasons currently to go downtown...a court date...visit the government building or get a great meal at Market street.....until there are more reasons downtown will continue to decay.

You cannot reasonably lay its problems on policians....it is the marketplace at work...period.

anonymous 11:29, ahhhhh, the power of suggestion.

So what do you think will happen once this Mayor sells the old Fire House to a private investor and allows UMES to open up a restaurant that will compete with Market Street Inn?

Yeah, that's right, it's in the works right now. Some people will sell their own Mother's and forget who raised them.

Anonymous said...

Joe: Dont think the mayor can sell anything without Council approval.

As for the UMES restaurant...I totally oppose government competing with the private sector.

Keep us posted on that one...advise LORA...UMES has NO business opeing a restaurant anywhere other than on its own campus

To 9:29: I think that probably downtown will not be revived to the state it was long ago; but you are a negative person who apparently is not happy, so go back where you came from.
To: 10:56: That quote tells it all because as we experience real life, we grow and change.
Personally, I have been a registered Democrat also since I was permitted to register; but I will be changing my affiliation as soon as I can (I admit a little late); BUT I would prefer to be an Independent. Unfortunately that means you can't vote in some primaries.
