Obama School Speech Sparks Controversy

DALLAS (Sept. 4) - When kids all across the country return to school Tuesday, some will see a welcoming message from President Barack Obama and some won't.

Obama's planned address to students has touched off yet another confrontation with Republican critics, who have battered the White House over health care and now accuse the president of foisting a political agenda on children.

As a teacher, I can tell you that there are many students that desperately need to hear a message of accepting personal responsibility for their education and destiny. Anyone that believes that this is some propaganda is crazy. If you dislike people depending on the govt., then let them hear from the only man that reach some of them as our first biracial president. His speech is admirable, but these lame calls of fostering his political agenda are
just plain sad. Come mentor a needy student and then talk to me about their needs...

They're not doing it in my kids school otherwise I may have kept them home . Obama needs to deal with the voters not children in this most important time in American history .

8:33,

Thank you for your comment and teaching our youth.

What a threat, I am sure the teachers would have missed your redneck, uneducated child. Maybe, you should just homeschool anyway. At least up to what you know, what would that get your child to 2nd grade. Good luck.

So, let me get this straight. IT was OK for Reagan and Bush I to talk to school kids, but the Republic is threatened if Obama does it?

For the record, I'm not planning on showing it, but purely for time reasons - I'm starting a new unit and with just 6 weeks per unit, I need every day I can get.

Keep your children home. Just make sure that they are at least smart enough to work a cash register.

Oh my, it certainly shows that some of you are so much smarter than the rest of us. Mmmhmmm, personal attacks on children, against parents, making ridiculous assumptions about those who keep their child home for whatever reason. What is wrong with you people? Where do you get such a sense of entitlement that all thought of expressing yourselves intelligently goes right out the window, allowing you to behave in such an inappropriate way?

Just an FYI, I hold two (2) doctorates, and I guarantee you that my child need not worry about working a drive thru or cash register. In fact, I'll bet she's already better educated, at 9 years old, that quite a few of you. It's clearly evident that her communication skills, as well as her sense of courtesy and decency, are far more developed than those who choose to blindly insult and denigrate.

I'll bet that Baltimore County will have a portable theater screen brought in to each school!

I am a teacher & we have been instructed to show the speech on Tuesday. I do not have a problem with showing an “educational pep talk speech,” but what I do have a problem with is that we are supposed to show this video without even knowing what will be said. As a teacher I cannot even teach a lesson without a written plan to prove what I will be doing, but the President can talk to the kids without a written plan. So your telling me it is okay to have our students listen to a speech (instead of working on academics) when there is so much pressure from our state to get the kids where they need to be to pass MSA's?????? Oh yeah & MSA testing is approximately 2 weeks earlier than last year. Hmmmmm, it sounds like we are not worried about the education and instead we are worried about politics. I think this is a little backwards. What happened to priorities?????

Personally it's times like this that I'm oh so gladI'm out of school. If Obama wants to talk to the kids, do it when their parents can be there WITH them to discuss it. That's really my only problem, that and, like 8:08 said, kids shouldn't be listening to presidential speeches, they should be studying and working for a good future.

whoever instructed you to show the video obviously missed Margo Handy's email to the county that it was voluntary and by no means a requirement for any teacher...look it up

Where were you when our former presidents were speaking to our students?? Get over it.

Very few principals pay any attention to what Margo Handy says. She has been blowing steam and crawling up the hill until she is now a title-holder like assistant superintendent. The principals run their own schools while the top-heavy central office personnel run around like bees satisfying the queenbee or now I guess it is the kingbee.Sorry the general public missed the circus at the opening meeting. Mr. Mahaffey and Dr. Fulton would have had a heart attack. No wonder kids lose respect for silly-acting teachers and also teachers laugh at circus-acting supervisory staff. My wife who is a teacher video-taped the comedian group. Joe, maybe you would like to show part of this pittyful performance on your blog.

8:08 That is pretty sad, there has certainly been enough information put out by now to be able to write a lesson plan to show a 15 - 20 min. webcast. If you aren't up to that maybe you are in the wrong profession. Setting goals should be part of your classroom procedures anyway - you should have spent the last week talking about goals and appropriate behavior as well as establishing routines so this speech should fit in well.

A little bit backwards? I would agree with you there - if you can't see that this compliments your objective of teaching then I have to seriously question your commitment to the profession. Spending a little time motivating your least motivated students is time well spent - the potential payoff would far outweigh the less then half hour loss of time.

Considering the subgroups that would benefit the most from this speech I would think, as an educator, you would appreciate the help. Obviously not.

He's their president. It's important that they hear from him.

12:44 you obviously are offended by my opinion, but I spend everyday teaching my students about setting goals. I work with a low econimic poputaltion of students THAT I CHOOSE TO WORK WITH, and each day I spend time dealing with the fact that they think they cannot go to college due to money, or that they cannot be anything b/c people have told them they are not smart. As far as getting a lesson plan prepared, well you clearly missed my point. I can prepare a lesson plan around anything, but I would just like to see a copy of the speech to assure it is directed towards education. The funny thing is one of the subjects I teach is social studies, and I was sure to educate the students about the election & the importance of voting last year. I am all for students getting involved and hearing what Obama has to say as long as it is relevant.

By the way I was not instructed to show the speech until Friday evening, so no I was not prepared for this within my lesson plans for Tuesday, but I am sure you think that teachers only work from 8 - 3 and we do not do any other planning or work. Well since school started Aug. 25th I have worked 16 hour days, and weekends are a joke. So if I am in the wrong proffesion, then why am I working so hard to help my students both in education and in life????
