INCIDENT: Apparent Drowning

LOCATION: Area of Cherry Beach, Sharptown, Wicomico Co. MD.
NARRATIVE: On 08/14/2009 at approximately 2:51 PM, members of the Sharptown Fire Department, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland State Police Trooper 4 responded to Cherry Beach in Sharptown, Wicomico County Maryland in reference to a subject who had been swept away by a swift current while swimming in the Nanticoke River. The responding units were able to affect a rescue of the swimmer. The swimmer was transported to PRMC where he was pronounced dead. The family of the deceased was notified and responded to PRMC. The body of the deceased was released to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

In all seriousness, Sharptown sees many drownings (I would guess that they have at least one every single summer) that is due to the strong current of the Nanticoke. People don't realize that there are sudden drop offs and once you get beyond the safety of the shore, the current is rapid and fierce.
I'm sorry for the tragic loss of the family, but glad the divers were able to recover the body so that this family may have closure and begin to heal.

Nanticoke is a very dangerous river for swimmers,I am suprised they havent banned it at this particular beach for that reason.Just unpredictable.
Swimming is allowed within the swimming area at Cherry Beach. The swimming area is marked off with very visible bouy markers. Swimming within this area is alot safer than outside the marked area due to the safety precautions set up when this area was designated. But, as in with this case, when the swimmer goes outside the area, it becomes very dangerous with the dropoffs & the channel current. Swimming at Cherry Beach is safe as long as it is done in the swimming area but blutojthetotmom (???) people also drown in their bathtubs.
