KABUL (July 6) - Bombs and bullets killed seven American troops on Monday, the deadliest day for U.S. forces in Afghanistan in nearly a year — and a sign that the war being fought in the Taliban heartland of the south and east could now be expanding north.
Separately, Taliban militants claimed on a militant Web site that they were holding an American soldier whom the U.S. military says insurgents might have captured last week. The Taliban statement, however, did not include any proof, such as a picture or the soldier's name.
Four of the deaths Monday came in an attack on a team of U.S. military trainers in the relatively peaceful north, bringing into focus the question of whether the U.S. is committing enough troops to secure a country larger than Iraq in both population and land mass.

8:20 AM, unfortunately I do know people that have served, are serving, and have died in Iran and Afghanistan. This war on "terrorism" has been going on for nearly 8 years. You CAN NOT stop terrorism; however, you can help prepare and prevent it. Going off and searching the desert for a few people isn't going to solve anything-it is simply going to blow away money and time. That effort and investment are much needed elsewhere...here at home! You can not simply kill off a belief or group off-look at Hitler, his persecution of the Jews was the largest genocide in the history of the world and the Jews are still here today.
Like I said at 8:18 AM, Leave the war over there and protect the homeland. Had we been doing that effectively on 9/11/01 then we would not be in this situation right now.

Lets see the Afgans have no long range missles, no air force, no navy and no standing army but according to some responders they are more of a threat to the USA and their neighbors then Iraq was, how ironic.
