A Message From Councilwoman Debbie Campbell

"Joe –

I went to pick up dinner for my family at Vinny’s last night. Vinny’s (LaRoma) has always been a favorite of ours. I’m happy to say that Vinny’s was packed with diners and people picking up orders last night. It is a locally owned and operated restaurant and part of the fabric of the community for those who are not familiar with this great eatery.

While I was there, Vinny, the owner, mentioned that he has been taking some heat from SbyNews readers because supporters of my opponent Gary Comegys are planning an election night event there.

I would like to say this to your readers: Vinny’s LaRoma is a business. I am glad that his business will benefit from booking a reservation, especially in these tough economic times. My only regret is that I didn’t think to book Vinny’s for election night first. If I had Comegys supporters would likely be giving him a hard time for that. Let’s raise the bar and celebrate that a local business is getting some extra money through the door. No need for hard feelings over this. If you love Vinny’s food continue to enjoy it no matter who you support,

Regards.

Debbie Campbell"

I agree Mrs Cambell. Vinnys food rules and it is LOCAL. Any money we can get flowing into local owned businesses is a good thing.

Thats fine. I just wont eat there that night! Who wants to sit and listen to all his empty promises. Debbie, if you would book into another restaurant I would sure be there to support you!

While I applaud Debbie for her comments and attitude concerning her political opponents, we as concerned citizens have a responsibility. We have the responsibility to let business owners who support candidates who are against our rights and priciples to know that they are losing business because it. We have the right and responsibility to vote with our wallets every time we make a purchase. Are we going to support businesses that support candidates we like, or are we going to support businesses that support the other candidates?

He wasnt smart enough to book it. The slum lord did it.

I bet everyone of you still shops at wal-mart, who you supporting there?

What ashame Vinnie got picked up for DUI recently. It's in today's DT.

Way to go Debbie. You have always been a stand up woman and council person. Keep up the great work...

To the person who attempted to send in the last comment attacking Vinny's, use your name or your comment won't go up. I rejected it because without your name it has absolutely no credibility whatsoever. It's too easy to bash a place like this without putting your name to it, so I refuse to post it. Put your name to it and I'll let it fly.

Nice letter, shows lots of class.
Unfortunate timing.

cgilbert. I agree, but putting a sign in front of your place of business shows that you have made a personal choice to support a particular candidate. Hosting a free event as a fundraiser would show the same kind of support. In the case of Vinny's, I am under the impression that Comegys supporters booked the room for an event just like you or I would book it for a party for any other occasion, say a birthday. That is business and is different than supporting a particular candidate.

Debbie's comments just show everyone what a great person she has proven to be. Even those who may disagree with a view or two, have to admit she's a person of unquestionable character! You can bet Debbie will always take the high road by doing what's right.

Deb, thanks for taking the time to try and make things right.

I have nothing against Vinnie's or any other business doing business with whoever pays the bill. However, campaigning for & publicly supporting them is something different.

Read the article again. I didn't see mention of the restaurant supporting anyone. It stated that a party had been booked for a certain night. I agree we have the right to support anyone we want, but how do we stop a business from booking a party just because we dont agree with the people booking the party. Thats really not fair to the business.

cgilbert said...

Anonymous 2:15, I didn't mean to allude that Vinnie's is supporting any candidate. My statement states that I will avoid supporting any business that is publicly supporting a candidate that I do not support. I have not stated which candidate or candidates that I support. My point is that whoever you support, make sure that any business that publicly supports someone else knows that it is going to affect their bottom line.

1:18 who gives a flying f__k if Vinny has a DUI? So does half of the world. Crawl back under your rock you moron.

I got no problem with Comegys finally spending some money with a local business. No surprise he'd want to look good to that area ... he's been sucking up to them.

Debbie Campbell has been a patron of Vinny's for a long time. I think she and Terry Cohen both had an election party there so a local business could benefit. Cohen had one at Goin' Nuts. Spies and Ireton did things at City Bistro. Ireton also did his announcement at Chef Fred's. Lots of people know these leaders have always supported local businesses.

Comegys is just doing what he does best -- trying to copy quality folk who did it right the first time because it was the right thing to do. With Comegys, it's always, "What can I get out of it politically?"

I say Go Vinny's! Why not get Comegys' money too?

Great letter, Mrs. Campbell, and wise counsel.
They don't have a Comegys sign out front. They'll accept business from anyone willing to pay, but don't endorse them, unlike some other places that could be mentioned that sport signs from the Dark Side.

Well said Ms Campbell, and that is how it should be.

I certainly agree with Debbie and her views on most everything, but especially this issue. Vinny's is our choice for good Italian food any day of the week. We got take out dinners there last night too and had I known I would have picked up yours too and brought it to you. The guy is just doing business with whoever has the gold to pay. No harm in that!

Its just business, plain and simple. What independent businessman will turn that down in this economy?

Anonymous said...

Vinny's situation is different than that of Brew River. That business has a Comegy's sign in plain view on its property. You should be avoiding that business.

Campbell wouldn't have to write such a letter to the person responsible for this blog if he didn't wave raw meat under the noses of the uninformed and unmotivated that come to this site to get their insight and marching orders.

This is America. Supporting a candidate and voting is what true patriots do. I'd be more interested in learning the business owners and citizens that belly-ache about their civic leaders but don't vote or aren't even registered to do so. Those are the people I have no respect for.

Anonymous said...

It's not his first DUI and I hope it will be is last. So, there is not a sign supporting anyone outside his business correct? I also agree with the thought of not supporting the businesses that support other candidates. Especially Comegy's, because that means they like the good ole boy Bubba way of doing things.

Lets talk about bussineses supporting this town. Fact Dunkin Donuts does not allow one single poster to help promote any local event, non profit of other , yet they make a ton off this towns people. Fact same thing for Radio Shack, Walmart and many other national chians that take our money and send it elsewhere. This means that they hinder generating money for our county when they do not alow for Civiv Center events to put up posters. Vinny, lets just about anyone put up posters to promote all kind of events. Come on people you want to bust someone bust the right people.

Absolutely. Brew River was given, free and clear, a paved parking lot even though when they proposed building, said that they would keep an unpaved lot. Who paid for it? Barrie made it happen, at taxpayer expense. They are dyed in the wool FOBs, and part of the problem, not the solution.

we all the right to support whom ever we choose. I will still go there because the food is good and he does have the right. I may not agree with what you say but i will defend your right to say it. Lets not forget This is America we still have our rights........... for now.

I agree! It's a business trying to book a reservation. If he refused to book it, he woould be accused of discriminating against a particular candidate. vinnie is a good man. He gives back to his community. His business is successful because he provides good food and good service.

Anonymous said...

I thought the parking lot goes back to the city control in 10 years to a metered lot. Has that changed? Along wiht the pier, Brew got to used the end one until the 10 years also. The place is so run down now with JR running it, so I say if they want the parking lot pay for it, no more freebies. But if Comegy's gets in, he will keep FOB in place.

We absolutley love Vinny, his food, his service and we certainly don't care which candidate books a party at his establishment. More power to him!

Vinnie is a good man. So is Linda Kent who was on the side of all of us with the old mall and is now helping Hebron. Her brother T.J. Mumford has a historic house near the proposed development so she is helping him and his community.

SIGNS SIGNS SIGNS, Let me explain as a business owner, who owns multiple properties around town, and every election gets calls from friends of politicians, and calls from the politicians about placing signs on my property. I decided years ago that since I don't have any voice or vote in city elections, what difference does it make who's sign is on my property, as long as they ask. So for all you folks that think a sign is a political statement of a property owner, you would be better off asking who the property owner supports instead of jumping to conclusions. As a matter of fact, when I make a statement of my political choice I post it myself on my marque for all to see. So just realize that when you assume a sign is a statement and you decide not to support the local businesses, you hurt many people in these tough times from the employees to the donations that the local businesses make to all kinds of causes, whether in kind or financially. As a last thought the local donors don't use the Walmart philosophy, that is give a little, make it sound like a lot, instead we give silently with out publicity. SO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES AS WE SUPPORT YOU

Take a clue from the woman that made the post...be mature.

That is one classy lady posting a statement like that.

We need to help businesses here in Salisbury. This man serves food and those folks happened to reserve a party night there. End of story.

Just because he has his party there, does not make him a winner...but the business owner DOES WIN....get it?

If Bubba gets bumped next week, lets order "to go" chow from Vinny and eat it on the sidewalk and parking lot at his place if he won't clear his tables of Comegys and his comrades.

Anonymous said...

This is unbelievable. Attacking Vinny for DWI, commenting on a man that has always supported the community and wants to make a decent living. Who cares about who booked what, Vinny serve your good food to whoever comes through the door and if other parties are shallow enough to not to frequent due to political issues, then they need to go somewhere else. This is not a Vinny issue, just another saga in Salisbury politics.

Debbie Campbell = Class Act, as always.

Keep up the good work Vinny and Son (Joe)

Hey whatever you write about Vinny, DUI's, past bar owner and it problems, drugs, sexual preference...whatever...the bottom line is, he owns a business that is being patronaged & this blog is good for his buisness. Debbie Campbell did more his business by writing this letter than Comegys will do the whole 4 years if he gets elected.

I agree with Debbie. I have been going to Laroma for the past twenty years. I have always received the best service and his pizza's are the best in my opinion. He is also a great person! I will still go there because of this!

This post is quite interesting; Miss Debbie is a class act. The people of this city are lucky to have her.My view is when a person "steals your ideas" uses your "words" just remember imitation it is the sincerest form of flattery.
I have noticed at several of the forums, and television shows that Mr. Comegys uses the exact words of other candidates, I have read his material and he has used the words of other candidates. Whatever he is doing by copying others popular candidates is noticed by the public, so, we all know where the ideas originated, and we all know that he must be learning something, at least he is copying the best candidates we have.

Mark 606pm, As a life time resident of Salisbury and an owner of 2 businesses, I respect your right. For every action there is a reaction. Whether or not you have the right to vote, you have a responsibility to all Salisbury residents and your patrons. To place or allow to be placed, signs that support a candidate that has a proven track record of special interest groups, rubber stamping, lying, dishonest, self promoting and is 100% responsible for the current decline, lawlessness, wasteful spending and destruction of our city.....IS IRRESPONSIBLE ON YOUR PART, you are either ignorant of all that has been going on in Salisbury, or you dont give a hoot about your patrons or the health and welfare of our city.

10:30 PM

You should tell Vinny you'd like to have that dish sometime. That's what's so good about a local business and I'm sure if he knew you were coming he'd hook you up.

That's the extra's you get from in house owners.

4:45 you're right. Right out of the gate he used a line from Debbie's announcement speech "Together We Can." I can't count how many times he has taken words and ideas of others including this environmental taks force thing. Campbell had been talking about that and trying to get the council to implement ideas for years. Then Cohen joined in. It wasn't until election time that the Mayor appointed a committee and guess what Gary is on it. Did you know htat Cohen was supposed to be appointed to the committee too. I was at the work session. The council decided to have both Gary and Cohen serve, but the Mayor only appointed Gary. How political is that?
