COMEGYS TURNS TO NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING BEFORE THE PRIMARY

At the Camden Association's forum for Salisbury’s mayoral candidates, Mr. Comegys distributed a special flyer entitled “Jim Ireton’s Record” that makes various assertions about Mr. Ireton’s position on matters going back to 1995 – when he was 25 years old – several years before he was elected to the City Council. Most of the matters involve Jim’s votes when he served on the Council.

Coming from Comegys, some of the assertions are downright humorous. For example, he suggests that Jim disregarded his constituents’ wishes in annexing the then vacant site of the current Village at Tony Tank Creek subdivision, which has added immensely to the City’s property tax and also the income tax revenue. Does Comegys point out the he himself voted for such annexations as the Hearne site on S. Division Street and Dykes Road and many other sites without requiring any developer funding of the required public infrastructure? Of course he does not.

He also criticizes Ireton for voting for a 5% increase in sewer and water rates in 1998 – but fails to point out the several and much greater increases that he has supported, including the large one last year, or the several tax rate increases that Mr. Comegys has supported, including the double-digit increase in 2007.

Apparently, having decided to hang up the stiletto that she last used on Tim Spies two years ago, Barrie Tilghman is no longer available to do last minute hits on candidates who want to restore Salisbury. That must be why Comegys is doing his own character assassination this time.

Looks like Ireton has Bubba running scared.

I will tell you this much, if Iretond doesn't get elected mayor I am selling my house to the slumlords and moving out in the County.

Comegys is amazing. He'll use his bully-boy tactics to the end.

One item keeps coming up. The city spent $289,000 on the city attorney in the last year. Bubba says that it's the same as the $170,000 spent in 98/99. What he doesn't mention is that the expense then was the most an administration ever spent on a city attorney. It was when Barrie got the city involved in lawsuit after lawsuit, starting with Chief Dykes. Just that case cost the city something like $70,000.

Comegys has no qualms about spending over a quarter of a million on the city attorney for a
"normal" year. Look for that figure to rise by 40% or better if Comegys takes the big seat.

I'm right there with you. That is probably why the Slumlords want Comegys to win so badly. Just think of all the great deals they'll get on houses from the people moving out of the city. Salisbury will end up with a 90% or 95% rental rate if Comegys wins.
I own a house on a double lot, they can buy my house and build another rental on the back lot. Instead of one owner occupied home, they can have 2 rental units. At least that is what Disney has done with most of this block that he owns.

Anon 9:24am,

Isn't "Disney" connected to that guy that works at the city public works?

Anonymous said...

Not sure about that, but it connected with Disney Landscaping. He owns 3/4 of the block I live on.

I think the connection is Howard Landing from public works. Can anyone confirm this?

He's got signs up all over town on public property, isn't that against the law or code? If they are put on public property we should all to our civic duty and pick up the trash

When people are outclassed and feel inferior they often resort to negative. Just like a teenager knows no other way but to yell and be negative. Stomp their feet and such. Keep stomping Bubba you’re helping the voters make up their minds.

What can one expect from a low-life but low-life tactics?

If it looks like a fish, smells fishy, and flops around when uncomfortable, it's not a fish.

It's a Bubba Comegys.

That's exactly the attitude that got us into this mess. As Bob Caldwell often quotes "All that's needed for evil men to prevail, is for good men to do nothing"

You need to get behind local politicians when you agree with their policies and put up the good fight when you disagree, but leaving is surrender.

it's called "White Flight."

You can just look at that picture and tell which one is the honest hard worker and which one is ... not.

I'll echo 10:50 and 12:19. Jim Ireton is a class act, and Gary Comegys is ... not.

My hope this election is more people will put their names on letters to the editor and stand up. I'm just here seeing a friend on my way up to New York, so my name won't mean anything. The local rag won't even print a letter from me if I send one.

But my friend turned me on to what's happening in Salisbury (where I lived as a kid). You need to stand up for these people with a name. They are standing up for you and enduring far worse than any body else.

If you want change, stand up.

NC remembers when Salisbury was a good place to live.

Just think how fast you could fix things if you didnt have to play by rules. One can fantasize.

Vote for Gary and you're voting to continue Barrie's reign. Don't be stupid, people--stop the madness that was/is Barrie's administration.

At the forum held at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday -- Bubba was the only candidate invited -- he was asked about his attack on Mr. Ireton. His reply: voters should know about Ireton's record.

Fact is Bubba wants to direct public attention from his record -- on the Council and in the Circuit Court (his contempt citation for nonpayment of child support). He makes me barf.

It Ireton supporters cast their other vote for Bob Caldwell, we can beat Bubba in the primary next week.

Here's Bubba's record:

Chapter 11

'nuff said, but then again if he's elected Mayor he'll surely cause Salisbury to fall into Chapter 11, so he might know a good lawyer to help file the bankruptcy.

Let's make sure everyone knows Bubba's record.

1. For Hearne annexation without protections
2. For two TIFs robbing taxpayers of $24 million in future revenues
3. For a double-digit tax hike before reading the budget
4. For multiple water-sewer increases
5. Sassafras annexation (cram it thru before moratorium) with no requirements
6. Against filtration for pipes going into river
7. Against promised second pay raise for cops
8. For a $10 million Fire Palace instead of just what was needed
8. Against more firefighters
9. Against more police
10.For Marley Manor developer reimbursement
11.For Sassafras developer reimbursement
12.For "Big Toys for Big Boys"

Anyone want to add to this?

Seriously folks, we are not going to elect Comegy's are we? The whole thing is a joke right?

I'll add to 5:27's list.

Voted FOR paying nearly $500,000 for a road bed on the Northeast Collector road that was supposed to be donated to the city by the developer.

This has to be the worst excuse for a councilman or for that matter an intelligent man, one who is looking out for the people and not for himself or BPT!!! Please don't vote for him, if you value our city. Its time for bigtime changes folks!

Thanks, 7:19, for making it a baker's dozen!

Keep adding to the list!

anyone we get in that seat will be crooked... face it salisbury sucks and no one cares..

Looks like Bubba had a couple beers before the forum. Maybe that's why he acted so cocky!

I've been doing a lot of networking to make sure he doesn't make it threw the primaries.

The student body is registered and ready to vote AGAINST Comegys/Insley. They are determined to shove it right back to their landlords. Most rentals are vacant now, what are the slumlords going to do? Kick them all out? They'll need to have all their houses empty and comply with the codes like everyone else in town. Stick it to the MAN!

The next political sign I see on public property will be removed by me, no matter the candidate! That should send a message!

how about "for the bike path al;ong the collector road?
add that.
