A Letter To The Editor

Election is around the corner and much is at stake. Most Americans voters have already decided who they will vote for President and who they will send to Congress. I am just like many other Americans who are affected by the daily politics from both major political parties. I don’t like McCain and I am not impressed with Obama, neither has demonstrated enough credentials to lead our country in this time of financial crisis; both play politics as usual and try to present a plan that may attract voters’ attention, but they seem to forget about checks and balances in our government, which means that whatever they promise today may not be approved by Congress when one become the President.

The national media and its local affiliations practically have decided who they want in the White House, but they do not put into consideration that regardless of how their “electoral map” may look like today, it is the American people who on November 4 will make that patriotic decision.

For many Hispanics the major issue is immigration reform, but to me, our economy, national security, and education are more important; the rest can simply be put on hold. This demonstrates that being from a particular ethnic background does not necessarily mean we are all united in what we think is best for our country and who would better represent us in Washington whether it is in the White House or in Congress.

I know there will be sore losers from both major political parties after the election is over. Here in the Eastern Shore, I am almost certain that those who chose Andy Harris over Wayne Gilchrest will have their heartburn if Frank Kratovil is elected, but they simply cannot understand that democracy comes first, and it is the majority of the people who have the final say on who they want to send to Washington. Hence, I highly recommend that they accept the outcome and keep in mind about how strong this country is when everybody puts politics aside and try to work together as a nation.

Now, who I will vote for is another story. I just wish the partisan politics would play no role during this time, but that is just a wish. As a responsible voter and taxpayer I cannot give a blank check to the White House and Congress. Hence, despite of how much I dislike John McCain, I will vote for him; Obama offended many Hispanics during his keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Many have forgotten some of his comments about Hispanic issues; I do not forget nor would I vote for someone who directly and indirectly stated his lack of interest of working with my people until he decided to run for president.

For Congress, it is my belief that Frank Kratovil will do a better job for our district. Wayne Gilchrest during most of his tenure showed interest in working with people from different ethnic and cultural background and crossed party lines for the best of the general population while infuriating the local conservative elites. My vote will go for Mr. Kratovil for two reasons: we need representatives that work for the people and who are not afraid of working in a bipartisan manner.

Justiniano Leon, Jr.

This is one of the major problems with the economy and education. The hispanics are working in the US and sending money back to their country (not supporting our economy) and on the education side; they can not speak the english language and make our test scores very low. The national education testing doesn't look at the population that is being tested just at the overall scores. When state testing is in progress the schools want all of the "smarter" children at school to boost their scores. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PRESS 1 FOR ENGLISH? In the early 1900's foreigner's entering this country HAD to learn English what happened? If the US did not cater to the foreigner's they would be forced to learn the English language.

Mr. Leon your argument sir is based on a false premise or better yet "Whishful thinking" on your part, NOT facts.

But speaking of facts, it is Gilchrest who subjected the first district to his abnoxious, and sour looser tantrums after his defeat. It is HE who doesn't seem to understand, accept or respect the will of the people.

As for Mr. Kratovil, he is nothing more then a pawn for The Washington Liberal machinery who is dropping Millions to help his campaign.

We don't need Pawns, we need a strong representative who will represent US, the voters of the first district, NOT the DCCC and the Pelosi crowd.

Mr Leon put his name out there. He's stated his position and I'm offended at the anon posters telling him and his cousins to get out. He has a better command of the English language than any illegal I've ever met and deserves some respect if not credit. As a legal hispanic born and raised in the US, I resent being treated as an illegal because of my name.
I too am voting for John McCain, because I believe in hard work and keeping what I earn-not in redistribution and unfair taxation. Not all rich people worked hard for their money but that's just a part of life that isn't fair. All the Obama fans-Ask Obama if he plans to give half or more of his $4.1 million earned for redistribution. I already know that Answer.
Obama's job as President isn't to try to make life fair and spread the wealth around, it's to let us chase our dreams under fair and equal treatment by the law and protection from corruption and threats. He's not qualified to do that, and he's never been educated on how to do that. He only knows how to be a politician and say what people want to hear-no matter how many times he contradicts himself.
Last but not least, he has never and will never protect the most innocent among us-babies.

This is one of the major problems with the economy and education. The ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS are working in the US and sending money back to their country (not supporting our economy) and on the education side; they can not speak the english language and make our test scores very low.

**I felt I had to fix that-besides people who don't know the language don't test well, but don't think for a second that these kids of illegals in our schools aren't smart. They learn English fast, too bad their parents aren't invested enough in our country to learn basic English.
