Single Vehicle Accident On Rt 50 West Backs Up Traffic

A single vehicle lost control heading west bound on Rt 50, hit an old telephone/utility poll and flipped several times. The two people inside were trapped while the Fire Department carefully got them out. One through the drivers window and the other through the rear window. Traffic backed up for miles on Rt. 50 as everyone seemed to want to stop and take a look at what was going on. The Wicomico County Sheriff's Department closed off one lane so emergency vehicles could get in and out of the scene.

I had to drive back from OC yesterday ,from a function at Jolly Roger , and the attitude on the roads is HORRIBLE! I mean gas went down 20cent and everyone acts as if the woe's are over. Driving TOO fast , tailgating and being overly aggressive.
Never mind those that TEXT and DRIVE!
How could 'they' NOT make that illegal?
Is it that what happened here?
I see people doing it way too much and it is going to lead to more of this kinda thing.

9:13 Don't you see the Sheriff's Deputy in the road directing traffic or the car?

there was a real bad accident at the corner of waller road and north jersey road last night as well. if you notice alot of these farmers are planting their corn right up next to the roads, you cant see around the corners because the corn is creating a blind spot. they should have to angle the corn at the corners of the fields where it meets intersections so people can see whats coming.

cruggly
It was not the corn's faught last night. Driver error 100%. Thats what happens when you don't stop for a stop sign.

I took those photos. Wayne Barall was at the scene as well but don't ever suggest I stole a picture from Wayne. I'm sure he will back up what I state here as well.

This is a minor incident compared to what happen on the south (eastbound) span of the William Preston Lane Memorial Bridge (Bay Bridge) just before 0400 this morning.

A Mountaire Farms truck traveling westbound on the south (eastbound) span crossed over into the opposing traffic lane and went through the parapet falling roughly 40' landing in 10' of water down stream of the span killing the driver. A Camaro and a Prius were also involve in the wreck. Two people in the Camaro were medevaced to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. There is some speculation that the wreck was a head on collation. It is not known at this time which vehicle was traveling in the wrong lane.

WRC TV 4 Washington pictures of the wreck.

WBOC TV 16 Salisbury video of the wreck.

The south (eastbound) span was operating in a two way traffic configuration at the time of the wreck. The north (westbound) span was close for maintenance.

The north (westbound) span was opened to two way traffic during the incident investigation. (Two lanes westbound one lane eastbound)

Booms were put around the truck to contain the fuel leaking from the tanks on the truck. Cranes were brought in to lift the truck from the water.

As I post this the south (eastbound) span is still closed for inspection and repairs to the roughly 20' of parapet that was sheared off the bridge by the truck.

It is likely the cranes that were used to lift the truck from the water are the cranes that are being used by the contractor doing the deck replacement contract on the north (westbound) span. The cranes are presently sitting unused during the summer suspension of the project in the deck replacement project staging area adjacent to the toll plaza.

Sure the State Police handle all accidents on State highways. But, they also handle ALL the accidents on Wicomico County Roads too because the Wicomico County Sheriff's Dept. refuses to handle them. If there is damage to or a repair needed on a State highway SHA handles it. Does County Roads call SHA to handle repairs on County roads? No. The Wicomico County Sheriff's Dept. should handle accidents on the county roads like every other Sheriff's Dept. instead of having MSP handle them. Worcester County, Dorchester County and Talbot County all handle accidents on county roads and they have 1/4 of the personnel that Wicomico does. That's why you may not see MSP everywhere, they are too busy responding to accidents that the Sheriff's Dept. refuses to handle.

Those photos are not mine. Joe was on scene of this accident as well was I, Todd from the DT and Billy from my company. If Joe needs to use a photo he will ask like he has done in the past. H ewill not steal anything off my site.

And as far as everyone saying that MSP was doing more then WSD or the other way around. Why cant we just say it took a TEAM EFFORT? Why does it always have to be about who does more or who has the bigger toys.

When your on the highway with the traffic that was there on friday everyone needs to be doing their job or someone won't be going home. It take team work for the job to get done!

Everyone needs to relax (Troopers & Deputies). The Deputies provide a great service to the citizens. Eventhough they primarly do not handle accidents they do take care of a few when they can and almost allways are there to help on major collisions such as this one. Just like this collision they provide valuable assistance by doing the traffic control, which allows the Troopers,(normally only two or three per shift compared to Deputies 5 to 8 per shift) to handle the accident. This decision to handle or not handle county road collisions is a decision that was made by the administrators of the Sheriff's dept and MSP in Pikesville. The road Deputies and Troopers need not bicker back and forth about who does what. This decision was not made by any of you guys. Finally, we all just need to do the job that we are directed to do by the administrators and not worry what the other is doing!
