Less A/C for Delaware Prisoners

DELAWARE: Prison's air conditioner not working
The News Journal • June 10, 2008

WILMINGTON -- The heat wave is making it tough to keep some prisoners cool.

The Delaware Department of Correction says one of the two air conditioning units for the west side of the Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington is out of order.Authorities say both units stopped working last week. One has been repaired, but it is insufficient to cool the building on its own.Spokesman John Painter says staff members are closely monitoring cells and moving inmates to other areas when the air gets too hot. The facility is also using fans and delivering ice and water to inmates.

OH, THOSE POOR LAW-BREAKERS!!!!

trust me i am well aware of how a-c systems can break, especially with all the foriegn made parts. but this system should of had preventative maintanance done on it by county/state workers. i wonder if the yearly p&m was contracted out, were the yearly maintanace tasks done, done correctly and thouroughly. two down at the same time, what are the odds. im not going to "sweat" it, your in jail buddy i know hard working middle class families without a-c right now because of the trying economic times were in, i feel worse for them than i do any prisoner thats for sure.

Dorchester County has never provided a/c for its inmates. The DE prisoners are lucky they had it to begin with.

I think of the AC being more for the benefit of the prison guards.

Would YOU want to have to guard hundreds of inmates whose violent tendencies are increased with heat?

Not me!

Let me get this straight...Prison's get air but we still have schools without AC.

This world is going to hell.

Ohhhh my, poor prisoners. I feel for them but I just can't reach.

Who gives a rats patoot if they have heat or ac? They're lucky to have a roof over their heads and 3 squares a day. It's more than many HONEST, LAW ABIDING, citizens have.

Cut the AC and save the state some electric money. Let them sweat. Maybe they won't want to make a repeat appearance if you treat them for what they are...CRIMINALS.

Anonymous 11:56 AM, I can't believe you just said the world is going to hell over some A/C you have some serious issues, hope you perfect family members never go to jail for any reason, if they do, I wouldn't know because your anonymous as am I, However if any of your perfect family members do get in trouble, how would you like them so sweat to death?

If any of my "perfect" family goes to prison, I would advocate for no air. They deserve no privilages like AC, etc. That is what jail is for...TO PUNISH! Why cost the taxpayers even more money.

Let them melt or fry!

My brother is currently in jail because he lives life with his head up his @$$! I've told him to his face....you don't deserve A/C, free schooling, free dental or free cable. I am working my self to death with 2 kids and can't afford all those things because I am law-abidding! If it wasn't so cushy in there they wouldn't go back over and over and over....!

I feel that inmates should have a tent a small section of land to tend and make there own food, and be confind by chain link fence with 4 guard towers get close to the fence shoot them. that way the inmates will work for the food and save the tax payers millions. look at how the militar personel is living and look at how inmates are living. this nation is pretty messed up.

The A/C is not for the Correctional Officer Or staff. If it is why do the Officers have to stand out in the hot sun, at heat index over 100 degrees, so these poor convicts can have yard. Besides if the Staff and Officers have A/C, they deserve it. If you disagree then try their jobs in hot uniforms that don't breath. I believe inthe old saying, you do the crime - you do the time. This does not mean you are to be treated better than our Military or School Children. As a Retired Correctional Officer, I know what I am saying.

The ac is for the guards as well as the prisoners. How would u like to be in there whether criminal or worker with all those hot, sweaty, stinky bodies? I know I wouldnt want to be there.

As far as anon 12:41, Im sure if your prefect family was in there u would have a change of heart. If not u are heartless!!!

I do agree, if they did the crime then they need to do the time! But I also believe in people no matter who they are to be treated like a human being and not some animal.

I guess I am heartless then...

In my eyes, if you disobey the law, are convicted, then you should be treated like an animal. They lose all rights of humans when they do the crime....

sorry...

So when u break the law for speeding then I and everyone else should treat u like an animal!! I know that seems petty but no matter how u break the law people do it every day.

The Military, does not have it that bad, only the once that are out actually fighting in the war! The one's that are over there in, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait ect, working in an air conditioned building, DO NOT HAVE IT BAD AT ALL.
Trust me; I know what I'm saying.
Trust me when I say though that correctional officers have it better then those fighting for our country! Some of these guys are being shot at all day long!

Anonymous said... 6:47 PM, you say what you say but let it be your child or spouse or grandchild, I bet you would eat your words! Some people are in prisons just for simple things! It just depends who the judge is and if he is fair! You can have a ticket you forgot to pay and spend 2-3 days locked up, innocently absent minded. So make sure you water is never dirty. Also remember KARMA!
