Another Letter To The Editor

"I'm a very new reader of the Salisbury news blog, so I'm not sure if this is an irrelevant topic or not. It seems the blog is very politically minded, so perhaps you don't have any interest in pursuing this. Regardless, I was hoping you could help me with something. A close family friend's cars were stolen I believe early morning yesterday in a gang initiation. Then, those cars were used to box in a young woman's car. She was pulled from the car and raped. This got no news coverage, which got me thinking........ The rumor is that Salisbury is home to an unusually high amount of gang violence, and yet the majority of us are completely oblivious that gangs exist here at all. What gives? Is the local media trying to create a bubble that things are okay? Is there some sort of coverup so that no attention can be brought to the ineffectiveness of local law enforcement?

Do you have any insight that you can share?"

Oh no, this is nothing new. As a matter of fact, I spoke with an Officer last night trying to confirm some numbers I recently received referencing car break ins within the City and County. The first set of numbers I received was 30 break ins in the County just recently and 70 in the City.

I'm told the numbers are not that high but there have been more than usual break ins and the Press is unaware of it. Graffiti is back on the rise again, yet no one is covering that either. There's a perfect sample of their work this past week in the photo above.

Salisbury isn't rated the 10th Most Dangerous City in America for nothing. Yes, Gang related crimes are on the rise and if you want true and honest answers, call Sheriff Mike Lewis and or States Attorney Davis Ruark. They can and will give you accurate answers.

To complete this post I need to mention to ALL of you, LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS! The reason there have been so many B&E's is because people are leaving their doors unlocked. Also, many of the break In's are in small communities. Locking your home up tight would be a smart move as well because it's only going to go to the next level. The economy sucks and criminals have to make their living too. It's up to you to stop them from making their job so easy.

SALISBURY is "the 10th Most Dangerous City" ??
Where did you get this "fact" ??

Surely there's something missing in this description -- 10th for cities its size, or possibly 10th for university towns, but I can't believe Salisbury is the 10th most dangerous city in America!!

More information, PLEASE.

Where did the event with this young woman take place? There are so many stories reported that are totally unimportant--how was this one missed?

It's based on the total number of crimes, large and small, PER CAPITA.

While the petty stuff ups the numbers, in the dangerous crimes category, PER CAPITA, Salisbury is up there with Baltimore.

I forget the name of the rating company, and while the petty stuff skews the numbers, the FBI stats on the dangerous crimes in Maryland cities and towns shows there is no denying how bad serious crime has gotten in Salisbury.

Of course, we have a mayor who in one decade has turned this into a slum town and fired the police chief who knew how to kick ass.

Here is the link for city rating. This rating is not accurate because it does not have up to the minute information such as the recent murders within 12 days of each other. The stats are gathered from the FBI.

The mayor not only fired a GOOD police chief, Coulbourne Dykes, she fired a GOOD city attorney, Bob Eaton and the list goes on and on and on. Anyone beyond her control gets the axe.

Your right Joe about the grafitti, I saw more of the same two jokers who was tagging areas around UP.

the sad thing is, 6 new positions were proposed for spd and will almost definitely be denied. Along with any pay raises for the existing officers. So it wont get any better any time soon!

Thanks for posting this! To answer one commenter's question, it was off Old Ocean City road. You may be able to pull up the police call for an exact address. www.salisburypd.com. As I've been hearing, so many crimes like this never make the news. The entire community gasps in surprise at the few murders that get reported, thinking NOT IN SALISBURY!!! But in reality, there are a lot of violent crimes that just don't get put out there. Instead, we get to hear about quantities of goose poop and farmers markets at the mall. Not that those things are unimportant, mind you, but the false sense of security is a little unsettling.

Nevermind, I just looked it up on Salisbury PDs website to no avail. I do know it was off Old Ocean City Road. Maybe the city police weren't the ones to respond. I don't know where their jurisdiction ends.

Well, I said this before, it's not hard to select them, just go to MYSPACE.COM, they use the BLOODS gang layouts, and a lot of them are proud to were there bandanas, and through up gang signs, drug money. Go See for yourself, I had posted links to some of them before on the daily times blog under Tweetie.

This does not say that Salisbury is the 10 most dangerous city. It does have some very disturbing facts though.

What is Gangs? Salisbury says there is no Gangs here. There are more Gangs in Salisbury than in Baltimore for it's size. The news media thinks they are to big to tell local news. Then you have a so called paper thatis own by a company in the United Kingdom (England), and look at their crime rate. Salisbury doesnotmatter tothem.

1:10 it's already a no-go. Myself and few few others are soon going to be gone along with the proposal. Sorry citizens, it's been a pleasure serving you, but a lot of us aren't getting by.

From what I am seeing the citydata site data is from 2002. Here is data from 2006...

Very discouraging, BTW.

Joe,
Is it true that Duran, had part to do with the girl that got raped?
I overheard a conversation of someone who knows Duran’s parents that said, the girl happened to be Duran’s Girlfriend? It just makes since to me, because last night at about 3:30 am, police were everywhere, and so were the helicopters with lights! Then today the coincidence that they place an appearance change for him? Tell us what is going on? Has this guy gone on a rampage, because he knows he's facing life? Please let us know! I am sorry for the victim and her family as well as for the family of Duran, My understanding they are good people, not there fault there son is being sought out.

Last nights incident involving Duran Moss was a strong armed robbery. He assaulted a young lady and stole her purse and food.
No new officers for SPD and only a 2% raise compared to the 7% WCSD is getting. I would love to know the turn over rate at SPD.
The Chief is not fighting for his men, he doesn't care about them. I hope they all leave and go else where. Why should they stay? They can get better pay and do less work at other agencies.

Where did this strong armed robbery take place?

Anonymous said...

Calvin Ave. It was Moss arguing with his girlfriend. They went and purchased the food together. Moss is not a very upstanding name in the Salisbury community.

Could posters with Moss's picture be posted in businesses? We need to capture this one-man crime spree.
