Salisbury Zoo Director Joel Hamilton is sad to announce that on Tuesday morning, June 17th, one of the Zoo’s female llamas was found dead in her exhibit. She had been observed the evening before sitting in the barn. She was found by the keeper Tuesday morning in the same barn.
The llama’s body was submitted to the Maryland State Animal Health Lab for necropsy and tissue analysis. On gross necropsy, her liver was found to be compromised with many lesions observed. The lab suggested that these lesions were probably either bacterial granulomas or tumors. Approximately 90% of her liver appeared affected. The extent of the lesions indicated that the condition was probably years old. A more definitive diagnosis is pending based upon the microscopic evaluation of the tissue samples.

NOT FOR NOTHING BARRIE TILGHMAN, The ONLY drinking source these Llama's have is the RIVER! The Zoo has no City water into that exhibit. You don't suppose that's where these lesions came from, DO YOU?

Are you sure the only drinking water provided for these lamas is the river? How do you know?
My Wife was the Vet Tech for 18 years at the Salisbury Zoo, that;'s how I know. Oh, and yes, that is their only source for water, the river.
I was thinking the same thing as I read this post. I hope to God it is not from the water, if it is we're in big trouble.
I have to say,, If the precious animal died form the spills,, then the entire city council should have it fed to their stupid asses at one time and it should be broadcast live on PAC 14..
There is a lot of bacteria in that park stream water even when there aren't warning signs. Lots of wild animal crap winds up in there. Homeless people doing their business in it as well. During that last storm with heavy rains at high tide, the Wicomico river water overcame the dam and entered the fresh water steam.
What about the chemicals they use at Shumaker Pond for the Hydrilla? That does eventually runs down stream and thu the park and the Llama's drink it?
I wouldn't believe anything the Mare's Goon Squad says. So how come no answers about the Jaguar?
How sad! How could this not be a result of the highly polluted river? That river is so disgusting! And now, more than likely, an innocent animal has died because of this. My heart breaks for this poor animal put through that misery :(
Shumaker pond is so bad you can't swim in it but it runs downstream and the Llama's drink it? Does the AZA know this?
8:04 p.m., if you want to feed the llama to the council, please substitute the mayor for the two council people who have shown they give a damn about the environment and the animals, Campbell and Cohen.
They took an undeserved beating from so-called Friends of the Zoo -- maybe of the zoo, but NOT of the ANIMALS. a tighter ship run there would have saved some animals' lives. I hope the new guy is on top of things there. He walked into a load of cRAPP.
12:08 PM--AMEN! You said it all in a few short words. Campbell & Cohen wanted to improve quality at the zoo, not just throw a quantity of money at the place. I'm glad someone else understands the difference between FotZ and caring about the animals!
