Fatal Fire In Delmar

Very early this morning the Delmar Fire Department got a call of a fire to a trailer on Contentment Lane in Delmar, DE. Even though the property is on the south side of Rt. 54, (like mine) it falls into the State of Delaware, not far from Chief See's home.

The trailer caught fire from a space heater in the living room and another in Donald Dunn's bedroom. The 16 year old son was sleeping on the couch when he woke up to flames everywhere. He crawled to his Father's bedroom after hearing his father coughing. Once there he, (the 16 year old Son) passed out on the floor, "I don't know for how long" and was able to get out of the trailer before it was too late for him as well. His hands were burned and even his tongue. I was told by one witness at the scene that the Son was completely black and charred at the scene.

While I was there the Son and his Step Mother returned to the scene in tears, clearly upset with their loss. The Son stated he could feel the flames behind his head as he was leaving his Father's bedroom. The family Dog passed away as well.

Although his Father and Step Mother were no longer together, for now, the Son will go stay with his Step Mother as the trailer is a 100% complete loss. More details later. I'm told Wayne Barrall will be posting pictures of the fire later today.

This is why people should not live in those nasty things in the first place.

Wayne took some AWESOME photos of this fire. The fire marshall (I think that's who it was) standing back to the camera looking at the home....and the pic of the firefighter with the cat. Just Wow!The only bad thing I felt was showing the man's license plate on the truck. I know he wanted to show it was melted, but he could have blocked out the plate before posting.

To Anon 1:53 - When you are poor, you live in what you can. I'm sure it wasn't his choice to live in a trailer, but you do what you can in today's economy. Furthermore, it was just him, his son & a dog. At least he cares enough to raise his son & not be a deadbeat dad. Grow up already!!!

Anon 1:53,

Who cares if it was a trailer or a house? A man and a dog died because of a fire, not what they were living in. I live in a trailer because it's what my husband and I can afford. It's sick to see people like you judging people based on where they live.

just becuase someone may live in a trailer doesnt make you any better than them. that man probably worked just as hard or harder than you to support his family. smoke and fire can kill a person no matter what thier living arrangements are. it really irritates me to hear another person degrade someone of where they live especially after a tragedy such as this. if you hate trailers so much go volunteer for habitat for the community as i have done or are you to good for that?

Anon 153, be careful. You may one day wish you had a trailer to live in.

The News Journal

The victim of Tuesday’s early morning fire west of Delmar has been identified as 47-year-old David Wayne Dunn, state Department of Health and Social Services spokesman Jay Lynch said today.

Dunn’s body was recovered from a gutted trailer following the 2 a.m. blaze in the 38000 block of Contentment Lane, off Del. 54.

A 16-year-old boy escaped the blaze. He was treated at Peninsula Medical Center for smoke inhalation and released.

The state Medical Examiner has ruled the manner of death an accident, Lynch said.

State fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fatal fire, the fourth in the state this year.
