“Electrical Inspection Program” Goes Belly-Up

Miracles really do never cease, even if they don’t happen every day.

Buried in Barrie Tilghman’s just released “Mayor’s Budget Message” is the following: “This budget reflects my recommendation to the City Council that we do not pursue assumption of the Electrical Inspection Program within the City limits.” That comment appears on page viii.

Recall that before Councilwoman Campbell became involved in this potential fiasco last fall, the Mayor’s minions had scheduled a meeting to tell electrical contractors that they would have to use City personnel for inspections and how the system would work. What nobody told them, but they soon realized, was that the Mayor had devised the scheme to raise City revenue.

It’s uncertain whether any significant sum would be generated, but the system would have caused havoc or worse and forced electrical contractors and the public to rely on City bureaucrats, not a pleasant scenario.

And, once again, it’s well deserved kudos to Debbie Campbell from all concerned, except the administration of the City of Salisbury.

You know the old saying if it ain't broke why try to fix it!!! They (the mayor and council)can't even run the city, why in the world would they add electrical permits and inspections to this.
We had made the decission to not work in the city limits thank you for not making this go thru. It may be differant if the county was not doing a good job with permits, and the independent inspectors couldn't get the inspections done in a timely fashion. But that is not the case. If the majority of the Salisbury business owners lived in Salisbury and could vote in the city elections, the current mayor would have never had the chance to get in office. We as business owners pay our taxes, try to fight some of her idiotic schemes the best we can (ie the beautification of rt 13 south). Sounds like taxation with out representation. Oh well thats another subject totally.

You mean another under funded program like code and compliance? Internal Affairs?

Any one who regularly deals with the city and the inept departments within will agree that the less they take on as new projects the better for civilization.
Electrical inspections by the city? Just another layer of idiocy added.

This is good news indeed. I've been waiting to hear about the outcome of this fiasco.

I was at that meeting last fall when they revealed the list of proposed charges and fees for electrical permits and inspections.

I did some research and compared the rates other municipalities charged with our current system, as well as the new proposed system.

Guess what? We learned that Salisbury wanted to charge as much as 3 to 4 times as much for the same service that we currently have thru the county, and the private inspection agencies. Even a place like Prince George's County has rates similar to our current system.

I guess they would not have been able to generate enough revenue to suit once the provisions of the state law were applied that requires them to only collect enough money in fees to offset operation costs and expenses.
