Joe,
Respectfully, they're not threatening impeachment because of a "sex scandal". You can only impeach when laws are broken. As Governor, Gov. Spitzer is the chief executive of the State of New York and is responsible to uphold the Constitution of New York and enforce the laws of New York.
By seeking the services of a prostitute, he broke the laws that he was voted into office to support. By transporting her to Washington DC, he then made it a federal offense - bad move.
This is not a moral issue, or about a "sex scandal", its a legal issue. Gov. Spitzer broke the law.
Republicans get no second chance - see Sen. Craig toe tapping in airport bathrooms, etc. The outrage on the left and the drumbeats for his resignation over a "sex scandal" were deafening.
Also, while the prostitution ring was the headline, the real thrust of the investigation goes back to money transfers/potential money laundering. He's on an FBI wiretap.
Isn't Sen. Craig STILL a Senator? I personally never heard what illegal act Sen. Craig performed....therefore didn't understand the "legal" question. Immoral? A subjective term. For him and his creator to discuss sometime. As for this Governor, he should be held accountable for whatever laws he broke, and if by breaking those laws he has compromised his ability to govern, he should resign. Regardless of what party they're in, those people elected to represent us should be held to the standard of the office. BTW, this would include a Mayor or city councilperson as well.
Correction...it may not have been money laundering. It may have just been frequent transfers for the high-priced prostitutes. The first article I read made it sound like he was involved in more than just paying for sex.
Question is, what accounts was he transferring this money from?
