The Plaza Continues To Fall Apart

There are multiple problems with the Downtown Plaza but seriously, who designed these left over plumbing pipes and a wire going through it as a design? If you look at the last pole, it's bent and the wire is not only busted off of it, there was black electrical tape holding it together before it got ripped off here again.

The brick walls are constantly getting hit by vehicles and even the patio area in front of one of the restaurants is buckling and not safe. I know money is tight in the City, (why, I don't know) but either this is a place of pride or it's a junk yard in the making?

Perhaps Citizens can come up with their own ideas and designs of what they think the Plaza could look like and propose it to the City Council, like they did with the Rt. 50 Bridge going into Ocean City? It wouldn't cost the City anything and finally the people that pay the bills in the City could be a part of the pride with an end result.

Anything has to be better than what they did the last time with the place. What do all of you think about the Plaza and the future of it?

Right you are, Joe. The Plaza is a disgrace and is a game of dodge-em when trying to drive down and not hit the giant flower pots. Barrie's idea of improving the City aesthetically was to put up those ridiculous little flags on the lightpoles--cheezy looking. She does not have any sense of class or even common sense (and you can tell that by the way she dresses and presents her own self).

It's so sad to see the Plaza in that condition having seen it in it's hay day during the early 70's. When Berger's was open and we bought smoke bombs and firecrackers from them. The sodas at the foot of the old drawbridge right from the fountain rocked! Fishing under that same bridge catching monster catfish, carp, bass, perch and even the fall and spring rockfish.Watsons Smokehouse smelling all the different flavors and the handmade pipes carved from many different things. And the time the fuel tank on the river exploded lighting the night sky and shaking our windows. Walking to and from lake street playground on a friday night to play basketball and peeking into the Lock & Load to see just what was going on inside. Boy things have changed!

It can all change with the right elected officials and a lot of community support.

It's obvious -- close the Plaza to traffic and restore/repair the infrastructure, with some redesign as well -- and it could be very attractive and a public asset.

First step -- disregard the desires of the downtown merchants, and create a special tax surchage on the plaza property owners to fund the work.

Second step -- take back the Ulman property.
