Well,
that's one way to look at it.
Everyone on my ballet (republican) was running unopposed except Micheal Steele.
So, I guess you didn't miss too much.
I think it should be open primary and the top vote winning Republican, Independent and Democrap face off in main event.
That way if I happen to like someone other than my party's offering I can vote for the guy, or gal.

I think the reason there's a closed primary is because party officials (such as I would be) are on the ballot.

But iyeska's argument is a good one for an completely open primary more like the municipal one for county-level offices. In this case, there's about 7,000 independent voters (from Wicomico County) cut out of the process, not to mention the four other "minor" parties in Maryland.
