Last week Maine Gov. Paul LePage announced that some state residents have been withdrawing welfare money from ATMs located in liquor stores and other restricted places. The revelations come at a time when states across the country are trying to comply with a 2012 federal law that restricts how welfare recipients spend public money through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

Maine Struggles With Welfare Misuse At ATMs
As states work to comply with new federal welfare rules that restrict recipients from withdrawing cash benefits from liquor stores, reports released by Maine's Department of Health and Human Services show some doing just that.

You Should Like Corporate Welfare If You Like Government Controlling Industries
A crack dealer, they used to tell me in elementary school, would give me the first hit for free -- because once I was hooked, he knew I would pay any price to get it.
The federal government plays the same game, but it works like this:
Washington creates corporate welfare programs that hand taxpayer money to companies for things like exporting, building windmills, or hiring people. Corporations love this free cash, and they lobby to preserve it. Then Washington places conditions on this cash, thus helping steer corporations to do what politicians want them to do.
The Obama administration has accelerated export subsidies to record levels over the past five years. This month, the administration announced new restrictions on subsidies for coal-related exports.

Obamacare Pre-Existing Conditions Deadline Delayed
The White House delayed another Obamacare deadline late Tuesday, pushing back by more than a month when those with pre-existing conditions must enroll in new health plans.
The administration had already delayed the Pre-Existing Conditions Insurance Plan (PCIP), which was designed to help those with serious medical conditions transition to Obamacare coverage.
Department of Health and Human Services officials, though, said they needed more time to make sure those patients received insurance coverage, pushing the expected Jan. 31 deadline back to March 15.

FDA Issues Warning On Drugs Containing Acetaminophen
The Food and Drug Administration is recommending that health professionals stop prescribing combination drugs that contain more than 325 milligrams of acetaminophen per tablet, capsule, or other dosage unit, citing the risk of possible liver damage.
The agency said in a statement Tuesday that limiting the amount of acetaminophen per dosage unit will reduce the risk of severe liver damage from an inadvertent acetaminophen overdose, which can lead to liver failure, liver transplant, and death.

The DOJ Is Playing Politics With Education
Obama and Holder are sacrificing the education of black students for Democratic votes.
Anyone who has not yet understood the utter cynicism of the Obama administration in general, and Attorney General Eric Holder in particular, should look at the Justice Department’s latest interventions in education.
If there is one thing that people all across the ideological spectrum should be able to agree on, it is that better education is desperately needed by black youngsters, especially in the ghettos. For most, it is their one chance for a better life.

The EPA’s Privacy Problem
Farmers and ranchers sue after the EPA releases confidential information to environmental groups.
The fire at San Joaquin Valley’s Harris Farms burst out suddenly and rapidly, consuming 14 trailer trucks in the dawn of January 8, 2012. Wreaking more than $2 million in damage, it constituted one of the biggest acts of agro-terrorism in American history.
An anonymous news release issued by the Animal Liberation Front, a radical animal-rights group, explained that unnamed activists had placed containers of kerosene and digital timers beneath the trucks, linking them with kerosene-soaked rope to carry the fire down the row, “a tactic adapted from Home Alone 2.” The statement concludes threateningly: “until next time.” The perpetrators remain uncaught.

Bank Of America Just Confirmed The Fed's Fears About The US Mortgage Market
Bank of America just reported an earnings beat, but its mortgage business — a sector everyone's been watching — was a disappointment.
First-mortgage originations declined 46% from this time last year.
And BAC isn't alone in this. Both JP Morgan and Wells Fargo reported declines in their mortgage businesses yesterday. Wells Fargo managed to crush earnings through cost cutting measures.

State Police Working With Progressives To Violate The Second Amendment Rights Of The Citizens Of Maryland
New debate rises over Maryland gun law.
I had been talking with Mr. Wheeler last week regarding the State Police claim that over 50,000 citizens had their firearms purchases given to them, per State Law, after waiting the legally determined 7 days for the State Police to do a criminal background check. It is being alleged that 200 of the 50,000 persons turned out to be disqualified from being able to purchase a firearm in Maryland. It now turns out that 1 firearm, out of the 50,000 was eventually used in a crime.
When the reporter began asking about the 200 persons who were not supposed to have firearms having them I explained how this is the fault of the Maryland State Police because they were failing to comply with State Law by not completing the required background checks within the legally allowed 7 days. I explained to the reporter why a 7 day period could be argued to be a reasonable amount of time to infringe upon the citizens ability to exercise that right while a background check was being performed. I explained to the reporter the difference between Maryland a P.O.C., Point of Contact State, where the citizen is required to go through the State Police to have background checks completed in about 120 plus days currently, and a P.O.P., Point of Purchase State such as Pennsylvania where the merchant can run the background check through the same system used by the State Police, but it is completed in approximately, 7 seconds.

O'Malley Unveils Final Budget; Reflects On 8 Years
Gov. Martin O'Malley proposed a $39 billion budget for Maryland on Wednesday that closes a shortfall, in part by making a smaller payment toward long-term state pension reform.
O'Malley's final budget proposal closes the $584 million shortfall without taxes or fees while also including record spending on K-12 education. The budget plan includes $289 million for school construction.
The Democratic governor said tax and fee increases from previous years of his tenure made new taxes unnecessary this year - an election year with all 188 seats in the Legislature and statewide offices to be decided in November.

Bummer!
Finders doesn’t always mean keepers: A judge has ruled that woman who picked up a painting by Renoir for $7 at a flea market must give it back to the Baltimore Museum. It turns out that the piece was stolen in 1951, and as such, still belongs to the museum. Hey, at least she has a story about owning a great work of art for a little while, at least. [via The Wire]
Man Sued Over Pic Of Topless Woman At Empire State Building Redefines “Tourist Attraction”
Oh, the sights you can see from atop one of New York City’s Empire State Building! Over there is the Statue of Liberty! And look, yonder! It’s a young hipster just rolling out of bed at noon on a Thursday! But one sight the landmark building’s management didn’t want visitors to see on the Observation Deck was a topless model taking it off for a photographer’s camera.
The management of the Empire State Building is now suing a photographer for (cue Dr. Evil voice) $1 million after he snapped pics of a topless model on the 86th floor observatory, reports Reuters.

The Net Neutrality Rule Is Dead. So How Can The FCC Fix Net Neutrality?
This morning, a federal appellate court vacated FCC rules guaranteeing net neutrality, effectively giving Internet service providers the right to throttle data speeds and demand premium rates from content providers. So your ISP has a service that competes with Netflix? It can (and probably will) get preferred treatment. Companies like Netflix that eat up bandwidth? They had better be prepared to pay the piper. It would essentially mean the end of the Internet was we know it, but is it a done deal?
