MARYLAND RECEIVES NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF JUSTICE (NIJ) BLOODSWORTH AWARD

Grant named for Kirk Bloodsworth will help wrongly convicted inmates prove their innocence

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 30)
– Governor Martin O’Malley today announced that Maryland is one of nine states to receive the first Bloodsworth Awards given by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ.) The award, named for Maryland resident Kirk Bloodsworth, the first incarcerated person to be cleared through DNA testing, will be used to help other wrongly convicted inmates try to prove their innocence.

“The advent of advanced DNA testing provides law enforcement a vital tool to find and convict criminals quickly, and this new grant will give us the means to use DNA testing to help clear the wrongfully convicted,” said Governor Martin O’Malley.

“Post-conviction DNA testing is a wonderful program that’s a win for Maryland,” said Bloodsworth. “It’s a win for the justice system, for the people who are wrongly convicted, and for the victims as well.”

Bloodsworth was originally sentenced to death more than 20 years ago for the murder of a young girl in Baltimore County. Nine years later, post conviction DNA testing exonerated him, led to the identity of the man who committed this crime, and brought justice to the murder victim and her family.

With the $307,000 in funds received from NIJ, the Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention (GOCCP) will make funding available to the University of Baltimore’s Innocence Project Clinic to help with case screenings; case reviews and document collection; investigations into inmate assertions of factual innocence; forensic DNA testing; and the documentation of this overall process. Funding will also be made available to the Forensic Investigation Unit of the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office for desktop and laptop computers to track and maintain documentation in forensic DNA cases that may subsequently qualify for post-conviction DNA testing.

This funding will help ensure that those inmates with factual innocence claims who could benefit from post-conviction DNA testing are able to obtain counsel and secure the necessary tests. Before the Bloodsworth grant was awarded to Maryland, inmates who asserted factual innocence had to pay for their own DNA testing and investigations.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY HIGHLIGHTS MARYLAND BUSINESSES COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY

Maryland Green Registry recognizes Maryland business for their environmental efforts

BALTIMORE, MD (September 30, 2009)
– Today at the Baltimore Coca-Cola Bottling Facility, Governor Martin O’Malley highlighted the Maryland Green Registry, a voluntary self-certification program designed to promote and recognize “greening” efforts by organizations of all types and sizes in the State. The Governor toured the facility, one of the first Maryland Green Registry members, to learn about Coca-Cola’s corporate responsibility and recycling, water, and energy conservation sustainability efforts. The Maryland Chamber of Commerce endorsed the program at today’s event, which was attended by Maryland Green Registry members who shared information and best practices, Coca-Cola employees, and other State and local officials.

“Maryland businesses and other organizations already know that even relatively simple steps to reduce our impact on the environment save money and create a healthier workplace,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “The Maryland Green Registry provides an opportunity for these organizations to share their stories and inspire others to take steps to protect our air, land, and water, including the Chesapeake Bay. We’re fortunate to have nearly 80 organizations in our State who have agreed to come forward and participate – including this Coca-Cola bottling facility – and we hope to have hundreds more organizations join us.”

Membership is free and encourages businesses, churches, schools, governments, and other organizations to share information on the practices they have in place to reduce the environmental impact of their facilities and services.

Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Shari T. Wilson said: “The Maryland Department of the Environment’s mission protects the environment and public health in part through enacting and enforcing strong environmental laws, but we also work to help Marylanders – organizations and individuals – voluntarily take action to be “green.” The Maryland Green Registry is a great example of this.”

To become a member, Maryland organizations are encouraged to visit the Maryland Green Registry website at www.green.maryland.gov and complete a best practices profile. The registry includes checklists for best practices in the areas of environmental management and leadership; waste reduction; energy and water conservation; transportation; and green building design. The checklists offer examples of activities to be included in the organization’s profile, as well as inspiration and ideas for future efforts.

Participating organizations receive a Green Registry window decal for display, and their profiles are be posted online to demonstrate each member’s environmental commitment.

Introduced by Governor Martin O’Malley in October 2008, Smart, Green & Growing was created to foster a smarter, greener, more sustainable future for Maryland families. The Initiative is bringing together state agencies, local governments, businesses and citizens to revitalize communities, improve transit, create green jobs, address climate change, conserve energy, preserve land, and restore the Chesapeake Bay.

Happy Fall

From one pumpkin to another!!!!!!!

A woman was asked by a coworker,

'What is it like to be a Christian?'

The coworker replied, 'It is like being a pumpkin.'

God picks you from the patch, brings you in,

and washes all the dirt off of you.

Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.
He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed.

Then He carves you a new smiling face and

puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.'

This was passed on to me by another pumpkin.

Now it's your turn to pass it to other pumpkins.

I liked this enough to send it to all the pumpkins in my patch.

Delmar Mayoral Candidate Tom McGuire Freaks Out

Not only did I peg this guy perfectly, he's now been contacting everyone who is using their name on the Blog and attacking them verbally and calling me a liar. He's stating that I cut up his Wife's e-mail and not telling the whole story. Then he claimed she didn't even write it, it's not her e-mail address.

OK Tom, I didn't Post her e-mail address. I didn't want her getting a ton of threatening e-mail messages from the many thousands of pissed off people.

This afternoon I was at an office in Salisbury when my phone rang. The gentleman on the phone used a deep voice and said, "would you like a one on one interview with Mr. Tom McGuire?" I replied, WHO? He said, "Tom McGuire, would you like a one on one interview with him." I said, is that you Tom? He hesitated and then said, "yeah, do you want to interview me, or not." I said, what don't you understand about my telling you to NEVER contact me again or I'd have you arrested. He replied, "WBOC & WMDT are interviewing me today, do you want to talk to me one one one or not."

I contacted WMDT & WBOC and quite frankly they want nothing to do with this S.O.B.. Tom has also been contacting the people who have commented using their name and is harassing them and LYING to them, trying to make excuses for the letter his Wife sent me. Folks, I'd watch out for this guy if I were you. Remember when I said he's the type who would jump out of the bushes asking why you haven't paid your taxes, like a Bounty Hunter would. Well..............

"Sale of the Hahn Apparatus in your Blog

Sir,

I am a Fire Commissioner in Hazlet NJ. We have recently decided to cycle one of our vehicle. It is a Hahn 1500 GPM Pumper. I am doing some legwork to understand what the market will beat as far as previous sales and current asking prices.

May I ask if the company got their asking price? And was it sold as a sealed bid or just to the buyer direct?

Your help is greatly appreciated."

Yeah, some Blog Owners would just die to have resources like Salisbury News does. Nevertheless, it's obvious I'm not the only one who thinks it's whacked to see the SFD all the way in Cambridge. This person forgot to mention the HAZMAT equipment and the Ambulance but that's cool, we clearly get the idea. Thanks for sharing these Kodak Moments with us. We'll be sure to check up on the SFD and see what their new MADE UP PROTOCOL is today.

I'm sure they'll be flipping a coin and making excuses as to why they need to take out the Ladder Truck later for routine training, hence the traditional pit stop at WaWa, Panara Bread and then Thirsty's.

UPDATE:

CAMBRIDGE - A 56-year-old man was flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore after a hazardous materials spill Wednesday morning at a small chemical company in Cambridge.

Jeff Hurley, chief of the Cambridge fire and rescue company, said between 10 and 20 gallons of sodium hydroxide spilled during a transfer from a truck at Intercoastal Trading Inc.

Hurley said the spill was quickly contained and was never a threat to the public. The vendor had much of the spill under control by the time emergency crews arrived, according to Hurley.

Republicans Host Fantastic Fundraiser For Congressional Candidate Andy Harris

Congressional Candidate Andy Harris was overwhelmed with support at a recent fundraiser at Mark & Hala McIver's home this past weekend.

It looks as if the race is on and Andy is well prepared to give Frank Kratovil one heck of a fight for the 1st District Congressional Seat. Clearly there will be more to come right here on Salisbury News.

Kratovil Hosts Successful Foreclosure Prevention Seminar

Over 150 receive advice and assistance to prevent and protect against home foreclosures.

Washington, DC – Over the weekend Rep. Frank Kratovil hosted a successful foreclosure prevention seminar at Maces Lane Middle School in Cambridge, MD. The seminar featured presentations and counseling sessions sponsored by housing counselors, pro bono attorneys and representatives of major lenders. Attendees were given the opportunity to meet individually with counselors and discuss what options are available to help stay in their home.

“First and foremost, this seminar was about giving people tools and making sure they are aware of the resources offered within the community to prevent and work through a home foreclosure crisis,” said Rep. Kratovil. “This workshop was designed to help distressed homeowners learn about their options before it’s too late, and I think it succeeded.”

Over 150 constituents attended the afternoon-long workshop, and all had the opportunity to sit down individually with pro bono housing counselors and foreclosure attorneys to assess their status and prescribe a course of action to protect them from losing their home. Representatives from major lenders and servicers were also on hand to meet with homeowners, some of whom succeeded in having the terms of their mortgage modified on the spot.

“This isn’t about handouts or bailouts. This is about helping out hard-working families who tried to play by the rules but still wound up in a tough spot. The best outcome for everyone – homeowners, lenders, and the community – is to help families stay in their homes,” Rep. Kratovil told the crowd. “That starts with learning what resources are available to help get through this tough time and start rebuilding your financial future...”

A report by the Center for Responsible Lending projects that 8,000 homes will be foreclosed in Maryland’s First Congressional District this year, a number which may grow to 27,000 foreclosures over the next four years.

“Our neighbors facing the threat of foreclosure need to know that they have options, and that there are counselors who can help them get through these tough times. I encourage anyone who finds themselves in this difficult position to take advantage of the resources that the community can offer,” said Rep. Kratovil.

Rep. Kratovil intends to host additional workshops for more communities in the First District, none have been scheduled as of yet but interested citizens can continue to check www.house.gov.kratovil for more information or contact one of Rep. Kratovil’s district offices for more information.

Congressman Kratovil would like to thank the following organizations for offering their time and services: Fannie Mae, MD Dept of Housing & Community Development, Freddie Mac, GMAC, Bank of America, USDA Rural Development, Wells Fargo, Federal Reserve, Wye Mortgage and Bancshares, JP Morgan Chase, Saxon Mortgage, HUD, NeighborWorks, Community Law Center, Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Svcs, Inc., Delmarva Community Action Center, CCCS of Maryland and Delaware, Mid Shore Pro Bono, Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, Catholic Charities, Legal Aid Services, Dorchester County Board of Education/Maces Lane Middle School.

Life In Dog Years: Many Pets Living Longer

When Denice Shaughnessy’s wirehaired dachshund Chanel died last month at the age of 21, she was heralded as the world’s oldest dog, according to Guinness World Records.

Now another old dog, one still living, is vying for that title. Max, a terrier mix, is 26 years old, according to his owner, Janelle Derouen of New Iberia, La., although Guinness has yet to certify his status.

And dogs aren’t the only pets living longer. A Sphynx cat, Granpa Rexs Allen of Austin, Texas, was 34 years old when he finally died in 1998.

Dogs like Chanel and Max and cats like Granpa Rexs Allen are outside the norm, but they may be trailing indicators of an increasingly long pet lifespan. Veterinarians say it’s not unusual for some dogs and cats to reach 15 years or more, and they’re seeing more and more pets do so.
“Just as the average life expectancy for people keeps reaching closer to the century mark, we’ll continue to see the same parallels in our pet population,” says Martha Smith, director of veterinary services at Boston’s Animal Rescue League.

The choices we make for our pets can go a long way in affecting their lifespans, say veterinarians. And so can the pet you pick.

Size matters If you want your dog to live a long time, choose a small or medium-size breed. Longevity directly correlates to breed size. Large dogs have shorter lifespans than small or medium-size dogs, and toy breeds tend to have the longest lives of all. As for giant breeds such as Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, Great Danes and Irish wolfhounds? Well, they don’t have a giant-size lifespan.

Ex-Democratic Fundraiser Sentenced To 24 years

His donations were an embarrassment for Hillary Clinton's campaign

NEW YORK
- Former Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison Tuesday by a judge who accused him of funding his fraud by manipulating the political process in a way that "strikes at the very core of our democracy."

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero sentenced the 58-year-old Hsu to 20 years in prison for his guilty plea to fraud charges and another four years and four months in prison for his conviction at trial for breaking campaign finance laws.

In a lengthy criticism of Hsu's fraud, the judge said the former fundraiser used political contributions to win respect and impress investors as he committed a campaign finance fraud that "strikes at the very core of our democracy."
