Surveillance Reform On Hold, And The Government Shutdown Is The Excuse

After months of gaining steam, the federal government shutdown is forcing a delay on surveillance reform efforts.

Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, and LinkedIn asked the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to delay the proceedings over “their lawsuits against the U.S. government over surveillance transparency,” The Hill reports.

The companies were scheduled to respond by Oct. 21 to a recent DOJ motion urging the FISC to reject their pleas to be able to publish the number of user data requests they receive from the nation’s intelligence agencies.

Last night (October 9), my wife brought home a pamphlet from our local CVS pharmacy, titled "Affordable Care Act Answers." I didn't expect to find anything in this simple booklet that I didn't already know, but it did refer me to their website on the topic, CVS.com/insurance, which my wife asked me to check out.
On the website is this Q&A entry:
Do I need to have insurance?

Yes. The ACA requires all Americans have health care coverage "that meets basic minimum standards."
I said to my wife, "That's flat-out false," and I sent a brief, indignant note to CVS from my iPad telling them of their mistake, and why they were wrong.
Then it occurred to me -- although I know that the CVS website statement is untrue, most Americans are acting as if, indeed, the federal government has ordered them to buy health insurance, or else. I've been checking the HealthCare.gov Facebook page (at https://www.facebook.com/Healthcare.gov) regularly, and I see people panicking -- they feel they must buy health insurance by December 15, and the signup website still doesn't work in its ninth day of being up and running (or should I say "not running"?).

FIRED-UP GOP REP. DRESSES DOWN TOP IRS OFFICIAL AT CENTER OF ‘TWO OF THE BIGGEST ISSUES THIS COUNTRY HAS DEALT WITH IN RECENT HISTORY’

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Wednesday went after Sarah Hall Ingram, who once headed the IRS division that targeted conservative groups, expressing his frustration that it took her five whole months before she agreed to come before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Some GOP lawmakers have been hammering Ingram for months as she headed the IRS division that targeted conservative political groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status. Hall said she left to run the agency’s health care office in 2010, about six months before a top deputy learned about the targeting.

THE BATTLING BOYS OF BENGHAZI

We're the battling boys of Benghazi

No fame, no glory, no paparazzi.

Just a fiery death in a blazing hell

Defending our country we loved so well.

It wasn't our job, but we answered the call,

fought to the Consulate and scaled the wall.

We pulled twenty Countrymen from the jaws of fate

Led them to safety, and stood at the gate.

Just the two of us, and foes by the score,

But we stood fast to bar the door.

Three calls for reinforcement, but all were denied,

So we fought, and we fought, and we fought until we died.

We gave our all for our Uncle Sam,

But Barack Obama didn't give a damn.

Just two dead seals who carried the load

No thanks to us...we were just "Bumps In The Road".

GOP Lawmaker Blasts MSNBC’s Obamacare Coverage

(Newsbusters) Appearing on Andrea Mitchell’s MSNBC 1 p.m. ET hour show on Tuesday, Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy slammed the press for not doing its job in pointing out the hypocrisy of ObamaCare being delayed for certain groups but not for all Americans: “…the media won’t even ask the question about, ‘Why are you [the Obama administration] treating families different than big businesses?’…That’s how pathetic, I think, news reporting has become, when we won’t ask tough questions to the administration.”

New Delaware Health Insurance Exchange Still Experiencing Start-Up Problems

DOVER, Del. — Delaware officials say they’re still experiencing problems with the launch of the state’s new health insurance exchange.

Officials as of Thursday have yet to confirm a single enrollment in the exchange, part of the federal health care reform effort.

The state health care commission also was told that only about half of the 68 “marketplace guides” being hired to teach people about the exchange and help them enroll have been fully certified, with many still awaiting completion of federal criminal background checks.

Obama Administration Brings Chilling Effect On Journalism

The U.S. government's aggressive prosecution of leaks and efforts to control information are having a chilling effect on journalists and government whistle-blowers, according to a report released Thursday on U.S. press freedoms under the Obama administration.

The Committee to Protect Journalists conducted its first examination of U.S. press freedoms amid the Obama administration's unprecedented number of prosecutions of government sources and seizures of journalists' records. Usually the group focuses on advocating for press freedoms abroad.

Leonard Downie Jr., a former executive editor of The Washington Post, wrote the 30-page analysis entitled "The Obama Administration and the Press." The report notes President Barack Obama came into office pledging an open, transparent government after criticizing the Bush administration's secrecy, "but he has fallen short of his promise."

"In the Obama administration's Washington, government officials are increasingly afraid to talk to the press," wrote Downie, now a journalism professor at Arizona State University. "The administration's war on leaks and other efforts to control information are the most aggressive I've seen since the Nixon administration, when I was one of the editors involved in The Washington Post's investigation of Watergate."

An Officer’s Life

*You wonder why he pulled you over and gave you a ticket for speeding,

He just worked an accident where people died because they were going too fast.
...
*You wonder why that cop was so mean,

He just got done working a case where a drunk driver killed a kid.

*You work for 8 hours,

He works for up to 18 hours.

*You drink hot coffee to stay awake,

The cold rain in the middle of the night keeps him awake.

*You complain of a "headache," and call in sick,

He goes into work still hurt and sore from the guy he had to fight the night before.

*You drink your coffee on your way to the mall,

He spills his as he runs Code 3 to a traffic crash with kids trapped inside.

*You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket before you leave the house,

He makes sure his gun is clean and fully loaded and his vest is tight.

*You talk trash about your "buddies" that aren't with you,

He watches his buddy get shot at, and wounded in front of him.

*You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls,

He walks down the highway looking for body parts from a traffic crash.

*You complain about how hot it is,

He wears fifty pounds of gear and a bullet proof vest in July and still runs around chasing crack heads.

*You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong,

He runs out before he gets his food to respond to an armed robbery.

*You get out of bed in the morning and take your time getting ready,

He gets called out of bed at 2 am after working 12 hours and has to be into work A.S.A.P. for a homicide.

*You go to the mall and get your hair redone,

He holds the hair of some college girl while shes puking in the back of his patrol car.

*You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over,

His shift ended 4 hours ago and there's no end in sight.

*You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight,

He can't make any plans because on his off days he still gets called back into work.

*You yell and scream at the squad car that just past you because they slowed you down,

He's in the driver seat of the squad car, going to cut somebody out of their car.

*You roll your eyes when a baby cries in public,

He picks up a dead child in his arms and prays that it was crying.

*You criticize your police department and say they're never there quick enough,

He blasts the siren while the person in front of him refuses to move while talking on their cell phone.

*You hear the jokes about fallen officers and say they should have known better,

He is a hero and runs into situations when everyone else is running away in order to make sure no one else gets hurt and loses his life doing it.

*You are asked to go to the store by your parents, you don't,

He would take a bullet for his buddy without question.

*You sit there and judge him, saying that it's a waste of money to have them around,

Yet as soon as you need help he is there.

‘TRUCKERS FOR THE CONSTITUTION’ DELIVER THEIR LIST OF DEMANDS — WHICH INCLUDES LANGUAGE ABOUT OBAMA’S ALLEGED ‘FORGERIES’

“Truckers for the Constitution” organizer Zeeda Andrews on Friday circulated a list of demands that will supposedly be delivered to Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert.

Among them are suggestions that “Barry Soetoro, aka Barack Obama,” is a fake president because “his documents” are “forgeries.”

From the document:

From 2003 to 2008, several members of Congress introduced legislation, attempting to change Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution on eight separate occasions to make it possible for Barack Obama to meet the eligibility requirements for the office of president. Of which, a legal investigation has proven that his documents provided are forgeries, which is a felony offense.

Obama Signs Bill To Pay Military Death Benefits

Families of fallen troops will be assured of receiving death benefits under legislation President Barack Obama signed Thursday amid a national firestorm after the Pentagon suspended the roughly $100,000 payments during the partial government shutdown.

Obama signed the bill into law after it won final passage in the Senate earlier in the day.

But his chief spokesman, Jay Carney, had said the measure was unnecessary because a military charity had stepped in to continue the payments. Carney also had declined to say whether Obama would sign the bill, which reinstates benefits for surviving family members, including funeral and burial expenses, and death gratuity payments.

I Was Sentenced To Life In Prison — Here's What My First Day Was Like

I remember my first day because it was my worst day. I was sentenced to life in prison on September 25, 1995 and about a week later was transferred from the San Diego County Jail to RJ Donovan Prison for intake into the state prison system.
The morning of my transfer a deputy came to my cell and told me that I was “catching the chain” to the pen. I had just made it to sleep as my cellmate and I had stayed up late playing chess and talking.

He was a 19-year-old 1st-termer headed to the joint with a life sentence and every night he would ask me a gang of questions about prison life. I felt compelled to answer his questions in as much detail as possible because I knew he didn't understand the danger he was headed into and he needed all the help he could get.
