The 'Subsidy': How Merrill Lynch Traders Helped Blow Up Their Own Firm

The builders of mortgage securities at industry giant Merrill Lynch couldn’t find buyers for their wares. So they paid another group at Merrill to take billions of dollars of the unwanted assets.

Two years before the financial crisis hit, Merrill Lynch confronted a serious problem. No one, not even the bank's own traders, wanted to buy the supposedly safe portions of the mortgage-backed securities Merrill was creating.

Bank executives came up with a fix that had short-term benefits and long-term consequences. They formed a new group within Merrill, which took on the bank's money-losing securities. But how to get the group to accept deals that were otherwise unprofitable? They paid them. The division creating the securities passed portions of their bonuses to the new group, according to two former Merrill executives with detailed knowledge of the arrangement.

Historic START Treaty Wins Overwhelming Senate Vote, 71-26

Washington - The Senate Wednesday voted 71-26 to approve a historic US-Russia nuclear arms treaty that mandates new reductions in both nations’ deployed strategic nuclear weapons.

Thirteen Republicans joined 56 Democrats and two independents in giving an overwhelming bipartisan endorsement of the pact signed in Prague in April by President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

“We have lived up to our moment,” said Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass.
The Senate vote came as the 111th Congress prepared to adjourn, and capped a productive lame duck session where bipartisan majorities approved legislation to continue Bush-era income tax cuts for two years and overturn the military’s “don’t ask don’t tell” policy toward gays.

The New START treaty was the post-election session’s major foreign policy triumph, one that Obama wanted badly. Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were at the Capitol this week to personally push lawmakers, and Obama made his own personal pleas.

Holiday Giving in Wicomico County Public Schools

Before heading home from school for the start of the winter break Wednesday, Dec. 22, many Wicomico students and staff took time to ensure a better holiday for families, students and even pets in the community.

Giving by Wicomico students, families, staff and schools will brighten the holidays for many in Wicomico this year. Here is a sampling of the many special efforts and activities.

All Wicomico elementary schools participated in the 2010 Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign by sending students home with specially printed paper milk cartons to fill with coins or bills and return to school. The Salvation Army picked up the cartons this week and will add the amount in the cartons to its tally for the 2010 campaign.

Fruitland Primary guidance counselor Diane Washington-White coordinated with the Jaycees, The Elks, and other community organizations to ensure that school families in need were helped. The staff held a casual day to assist a family in need.

Pemberton Elementary did "Pandas for Paws," a drive which collected items for the Humane Society of Wicomico County. Classroom ambassadors helped load the donated items on Dec. 1 at Pemberton.

North Salisbury Elementary third-grade Magnet students rang the bells at a Salvation Army kettle for five hours on Dec. 10. Students in grade 5 Magnet made holiday cards for the children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, brought in donations for the Christian Shelter, Maryland Food Bank and Humane Society of Wicomico County, as well as Secret Santa gifts that the school counselor can tuck into the book bags of students. Classes also made holiday cards for veterans at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington. STARS after-school students made holiday thank you cards to give to the local volunteer firefighters for their help in keeping families safe during the holidays. Staff members donated funds to help provide food, clothing and toys for NSS students and families. Mentors made special gift purchases to surprise the students they mentor. In January, the school will promote a campaign to donate hats, scarves and gloves to give to students who don’t have these cold weather items.

West Salisbury Elementary’s two faith-based partners, Wesley Temple United Methodist Church and St. Paul AME Zion Church, adopted a West Salisbury family.

The Salisbury Middle School A-Team, students and staff collected $874.06 for the Salvation Army through an in-school kettle drive. Students were able to donate their Eagle bucks. For every 10 eagle bucks an outside sponsor donated $1. Staff and students worked together to collect for this most needed cause. Salisbury Middle’s CARES Department assisted multiple families through a grant given by the Community Foundation. More than 50 individuals were assisted with Christmas gifts. Salisbury Middle’s Art and Crafts Club created stockings for the nearby nursing home, and the Ladies Club created flower arrangements for the nursing home at Thanksgiving time.

Wicomico Middle’s Students for Service (SFS) is a new club at Wicomico Middle for students who want to help make a difference in our school, community and the world. Students have an opportunity to bring others together for projects of their interest. Douglas B., a member of SFS, shared with others that his older brother is a soldier serving in Afghanistan. He suggested collecting items and sending them to the soldiers who are willing to risk their lives to support our country. SFS implemented Project CARE, which encouraged all Wi Middle school students, families and staff to bring in items to send to his brother's troop, to make sure the soldiers know how much Wicomico Middle School appreciates them. Coming together, to make a difference is what Students for Service is all about. SFS looks forward to many other projects. Elsewhere at Wicomico Middle, the newly founded SGA held a canned food drive in November that collected more than 500 canned goods, which were donated to the local Christian Shelter. The SGA sold "Candy Grams" during lunch – 50 cents for students to write a message to a friend on a candy cane, with proceeds going toward the needs of a student and family for the holidays. The Guidance Office is continued its annual Angel Tree campaign, where staff chose a needy WMS student and bought gifts for him or her.

James M. Bennett High School’s Club Hope (Environmental Club) made holiday cards and sent them to an alumnus serving in Afghanistan, for him to share with his buddies. The Child Development Class at JMB is collecting new infant care items for the Life Crisis Shelter, to deliver in January. Also in January, the Technology Management for Family Wellness Course will create fleece hats to donate to a local shelter for homeless people. Her students will vote on what shelter they will "adopt". Media Center Specialist Angie Langan coordinated a staff effort to collect six copier boxes of edible and nonedible items to send to alumnus Brian Engler and his troops in Afghanistan.

Parkside High School collected $1,152 for the Bless Our Children campaign, getting students in on the action of dropping coins into jars to reach this all-time high. The SkillsUSA Organization conducted its annual food drive throughout Parkside High from Dec. 6-17 with the food going to the Redman Lodge in Fruitland for its Christmas Basket give away for needy families in the Wicomico County area. In 2009, SkillsUSA collected almost 4,000 items through the drive, enough for the Redmen to increase giving to 100 Christmas baskets, and the need this year was even greater.

Wicomico High participated in many activities to support the community during the holidays, including a food drive by Mu Alpha Theta, but WiHi is saving one big project for January. The SGA will do a school-wide service-learning project called "Shoe Boxes for Salisbury." The students would like to address a need in the community for hygiene supplies and toiletry items at our local shelters and safe houses. The students will collect travel size shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. and wrap them in a shoe box to present as a gift to the shelters and safe houses.

Central Office staff turned out with checkbooks in hand for the annual holiday auction and raised approximately $2,100 for Wicomico school families in need. Six families received gift cards and food donations to help them have a happier holiday. The Central Office also held a casual day for the Maryland Food Bank, and Administration bypassed an office gift swap in favor of donations to Operation Outreach, sending $250 to this effort to send care packages to front line soldiers hospitalized in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan.

(Salisbury, MD) – Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and the Wicomico Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Wicomico County State’s Attorney have arrested two Wicomico County men and charged them in connection with the murder of a 63 year old woman found shot to death in her home on December 18, 2010.

The accused are identified as Shawn Franklin, 21, of the 400 block of Hastings Street, and Demarics Banks, 21, of the 1000 block of John Street, both in Salisbury, Maryland. Franklin is charged with first and second degree murder. Banks is charged with first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, armed robbery and other pending charges. Both are being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center on no bond.

The murder victim is identified as Barbara Greene, 63, of the 1700 block of Dale Lane in Salisbury. Greene was pronounced dead at her home where she lived with her brother, Reginald Greene. She was home alone at the time of the incident.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010, state police from the Salisbury Barrack received a 9-1-1 call from Reginald Greene. Greene informed police that upon returning from work shortly after midnight, he found the back door open and bloodstains in the hallway. Fearing that perpetrators were still inside, Greene exited the residence and went to a neighbor’s house to make the 9-1-1 call.

The investigation has shown the men barged into Greene’s home on Friday, December 17 at approximately 6:30 p.m. in an attempt to burglarize the residence. They were met by the victim who had come out of her bedroom. An autopsy of the victim’s body revealed her cause of death was a single gunshot wound and the manner of death was homicide.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and the Wicomico Bureau of Investigation have been assisted throughout this investigation by allied law enforcement agencies. They include the: Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, Salisbury Police Department, and State Police from the Salisbury Barracks.

The investigation into the murder of Barbara Greene is continuing. Anyone with information about this crime is urged to contact the Wicomico County Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776. Callers may remain anonymous.

I know you do missing dog ads and have good response with them.  We have a spayed chocolate lab that has been missing since this morning.  Her name is Soco and she should have a blue collar with her tags on it.  She went missing from the Parsonsburg area near the new fire house.  I have attached a picture of her.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Please contact 410-430-9569.

Thank you!

We have received e-mail messages as well as comments from others wanting to help out where they can and we just can't thank you enough.

I received a call from one of our advertisers about an hour ago asking me to bill them an additional $100.00 this month so we can go out and buy more goods. So you can see, our people truly care.

My phone has literally rung off the hook today. In fact it's on the charger right now for the third time today.   You people are just unbelievable, thank you so very much.

On behalf of Craig Ashley and his family, the Wicomico County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #111 would like to thank everyone for their donations.  Craig and his family are very thankful for the kindness and generosity of the community during this trying time.  We have been overwhelmed with donations of clothing, household goods and furniture for the Ashley family.  We do not need any further donations of these items.  If anyone would still like to help, please make donations of gift cards or a monetary donation.  Those donations can be sent to FOP Lodge #111 P.O. Tax Maps Don't Lie

Parcel 882 is the old Firehouse and the land it sits on. The same parcel that was advertised by the City of Salisbury. Parcels 883 and 884 are the Project Open Space parcels the city tried to slip into the bidding process without public knowledge. As you can see clearly, parcel 882 is not in any way, shape or form, connected to the property on the river.

HOW COULD THERE BE EMPTY SLOTS ON THE FINAL WEEK?????

I just looked at the charts for the Salvation Army and I see wide open slots not being filled on the final stretch in what has to be the biggest week for the Army.

Folks, there's no better gift than giving your time to help others in need. Please, let's get those phones ringing and get those empty slots filled in the spirit of Christmas.

Holiday Wishes

Dear Joe,

You and I are far apart politically, but that's irrelevant to your absolute right to express your views and publish what you want.  It's also irrelevant to the good work you do for the non-profit organizations in our area.  Anyone who has a problem with that should relocate to a country which doesn't value free speech.

I'm also a transplated New Yorker (born and raised in Queens, married to an Eastern Shore native), so this is a message of solidarity as well as Christmas and New Year greetings to you and your family).  I wish you health and safety in the new year.

CALMNESS IN OUR LIVES

I am passing this on to you  because it definitely works, and we could all use  a little more  calmness in our lives.

By following simple advice  heard on the  Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace. Dr  Phil proclaimed,  "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all  the things  you have started and have never finished."

So, I looked around my house to see all the  things I started and  hadn't finished, and before leaving the house  this morning, I  finished off a bottle of White Zinfandel, a  bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a package of Oreos, the remainder of  my old Prozac  prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some  Doritos, a box of  chocolates, and a half bottle of scotch.

You have no idea how good I feel right now.

Pass this on to those whom you think might be in  need of inner  peace.

Banks Accused Of Illegally Looting Homes

'When a burglar goes in, they don't take your photos and your husband's ashes,' says alleged victim of wrongful foreclosure

TRUCKEE, Calif.
— When Mimi Ash arrived at her mountain chalet here for a weekend ski trip, she discovered that someone had broken into the home and changed the locks.

When she finally got into the house, it was empty. All of her possessions were gone: furniture, her son’s ski medals, winter clothes and family photos.

Also missing was a wooden box, its top inscribed with the words “Together Forever,” that contained the ashes of her late husband, Robert.

The culprit, Ms. Ash soon learned, was not a burglar but her bank. According to a federal lawsuit filed in October by Ms. Ash, Bank of America had wrongfully foreclosed on her house and thrown out her belongings, without alerting Ms. Ash beforehand.

In an era when millions of homes have received foreclosure notices nationwide, lawsuits detailing bank break-ins like the one at Ms. Ash’s house keep surfacing.

Deal Reached On 9/11 Health Bill

A deal has been reached to pave the way for Senate passage of a health bill to aid 9/11 first responders, according to a source close to the negotiations.

Some GOP senators, led by Tom Coburn, R-Okla., had been blocking quick passage of the bill over objections about its cost and the process by which the legislation passed through Congress.

But after negotiations led by New York Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, the impasse appears to have been broken, possibly setting up the last legislative action of the 111th Congress this afternoon.

It's now expected that no objections will be raised that could slow down or kill passage.

The bill must be approved by the House (which has remained in session in hopes of the chance to approve the measure) before going to the president for signing.

Mike Krieger On Intensifying Police State Measures And Internet Demonization

Two very important articles have come out in the last couple of days that you must take the time to read thoroughly.   The first is from the Washington Post and is entitled:  “Monitoring America.”  It is a lengthy article worth your time since it shows in no uncertain terms how the U.S. government has now officially started to turn war on terror technology and military weaponry on American citizens domestically.  Stuff that had formerly only been “used in Iraq or Afghanistan” is now being turned on Americans and this newspaper reports it in a matter of fact manner.  It also describes how anyone can just say that they think a fellow citizen is acting suspiciously and then all of a sudden the government’s “fusion centers” start snooping on you and a file remains “open” for five years.  For nothing more than someone saying they thought you were acting suspiciously.   Welcome to East Germany.  This is where tax dollars are going, that and to pay bankster bonuses.  Link is below.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/top-secret-america/articles/monitoring-america/?hpid=topnews

Second article also encompasses and interview with Attorney General Eric Holder.  In it he clearly explains that enemy number one is the domestic America citizen and that is where the war on terror is now focused.  This is exactly as I predicted earlier this year.  That the “war on terror” would be soon revered onto average everyday citizens.  Ok, so how about this one.  In the interview, Holder talks about Anwar al-Awlaki and talks about how this guy is enemy number 1 now and as dangerous as Bin Laden.   Well, interesting because this guy was invited to DINE AT THE PENTAGON after 9/11.  This is a fact.  It was reported by all the mainstream news sources.  See these links on it….

Anwar al-Awlaki - the radical spiritual leader linked to several 9/11 attackers, the Fort Hood shooting, and the attempted Christmas Day bombing of an airliner - was a guest at the Pentagon in the months after 9/11, a Pentagon official confirmed to CBS News.

Awlaki was invited as "...part of an informal outreach program" in which officials sought contact "...with leading members of the Muslim community," the official said. At that time, Awlaki was widely viewed as a "moderate" imam at a mosque in Northern Virginia.

This is what Holder said today about him:  "He's an extremely dangerous man. He has shown a desire to harm the United States, a desire to strike the homeland of the United States," Holder said. "He is a person who -- as an American citizen -- is familiar with this country and he brings a dimension, because of that American familiarity, that others do not."

CBS reports

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/10/21/national/main6978200.shtml

MSNBC reports

Fox News Reports

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/10/20/al-qaeda-terror-leader-dined-pentagon-months/

So our government is so trustworthy on intelligence that we had the most dangerous terrorist in the world over for dinner at the Pentagon!  So either we are really retarded beyond belief or the whole “WAR ON TERROR” is a total SHAM to place in the police state.  More on the interview with Holder, he is consistently demonizing the internet with statements like.

“"The ability to go into your basement, turn on your computer, find a site that has this kind of hatred spewed ... they have an ability to take somebody who is perhaps just interested, perhaps just on the edge, and take them over to the other side," he said.”

Full article here:  http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/attorney-general-eric-holders-blunt-warning-terror-attacks/story?id=12444727&page=1

This is all good news and bad news.  The good news is that the global plantation owners would not be moving so aggressively unless they were losing the info war.  Clearly they are, which is why they are freaking out.  The next thing that is likely to happen is a false flag attack where the “attacker” ends up being a libertarian with a Ron Paul sticker.  That way they can move from Al Awlaki to the folks they are really afraid of: Good caring and armed American people that still have the capacity to think rationally.
