But just because the meaning of that word has changed in the intervening years, many Hallmark customers are not at all pleased that the greeting card company dropped the original “don we now our gay apparel” lyric in favor of “fun” for a new ugly holiday sweater Christmas ornament.

Facebook commentators took up arms against the company’s switch on Hallmark’s page, writing that Hallmark shouldn’t have changed the lyrics in the spirit of being politically correct — and besides, “gay” isn’t a dirty word, said others.

Reminder Route 90 Closure For Wednesday And Thursday

MD 90 BRIDGE DRAINAGE REPAIR

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will be replacing a drainage inlet gate on the MD 90 (Ocean City Expressway) Bridge. The work will be performed on Wednesday, November 6 and Thursday, November 7.

To safely perform the necessary repair, SHA will close westbound MD 90 between MD 528 (Coastal Highway) and St. Martin Neck Road. Motorists leaving Ocean City should use US 50 (Ocean Gateway) to MD 589 (Racetrack Road).

Eastbound MD 90 (inbound toward Ocean City) will NOT be affected. Crews will work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

The single lane closure is necessary for SHA to repair drainage inlets on MD 90. Portable Variable Message Signs are posted on Coastal Highway alerting motorists to the temporary westbound lane closure on MD 90.

Americans see potential for winners and losers under health law, causing anxiety and confusion

WASHINGTON (AP) — Now is when Americans start figuring out that President Barack Obama's health care law goes beyond political talk, and really does affect them and people they know.

With a cranky federal website complicating access to new coverage and some consumers being notified their existing plans are going away, the potential for winners and losers is creating anxiety and confusion.

"I've had questions like, 'Are they going to put me in jail if I don't buy insurance? Because nobody will sell it to me,'" said Bonnie Burns, a longtime community-level insurance counselor from California. "We have family members who are violently opposed to 'Obamacare' and they are on Medicaid — they don't understand that they're already covered by taxpayer benefits.

"And then there is a young man with lupus who would have never been insurable," Burns continued. "He is on his parents' plan and he'll be able to buy his own coverage. They are very relieved."

A poll just out from the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation documents shifts in the country in the month since insurance sign-ups began.

Fifty-five percent now say they have enough information to understand the law's impact on their family, up 8 percentage points in just one month. Part of the reason is that advertising about how to get coverage is beginning to register.

"The law is getting more and more real for people," said Drew Altman, the foundation's president. "A lot of this will turn on whether there's a perception that there have been more winners than losers. ... It's not whether an expert thinks something is a better insurance policy, it's whether people perceive it that way."

The Obama administration says a senior Democratic Senator asked the White House to shut down HealthCare.gov until it's fixed. The answer was "no." The Wall Street Journal reports, the request came from Sen. Dianne Feinstein. It went to Denis McDonough, the president's chief of staff. He says administration officials believe it's easier to fix the site if it's kept running. McDonough said the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had also considered taking it offline.

Americans are moving away from high-tax, high-housing-cost states.

Where are Americans moving, and why? Timothy Noah, writing in the Washington Monthly, professes to be puzzled. He points out that people have been moving out of states with high per capita incomes — Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland — to states with lower income levels.

“Why are Americans by and large moving away from economic opportunity rather than toward it?” he asks.

Actually, it’s not puzzling at all. The movement from high-tax, high-housing-cost states to low-tax, low-housing-cost states has been going on for more than 40 years, as I note in my new bookShaping Our Nation: How Surges of Migration Transformed America and Its Politics. Between 1970 and 2010, the population of New York state increased from 18 million to 19 million. In that same period, the population of Texas increased from 11 million to 25 million. The picture is even starker if you look at major metro areas. The New York metropolitan area, including counties in New Jersey and Connecticut, increased from 17.8 million in 1970 to 19.2 million in 2010 — up 8 percent. During that time, the nation grew 52 percent. In the same period, the four big metro areas in Texas — Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin — grew from 6 million to 15.6 million, a 160 percent increase.

Man Killed After Falling From Roth Bridge

Location: Roth Bridge, Middletown, DE

Date of Occurrence: Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 1:41 a.m.

Victim: 26-year-old male from Wilmington, DE

Resume: Middletown -Troopers are investigating the death of a 26-year-old Wilmington man who died this morning after falling from the Roth Bridge.

The investigation began at 1:41 a.m. when Troopers responded to a report of a man who fell from the bridge. Detectives determined that the victim had been driving south on Route 1 when his vehicle became disabled on the northern side of the bridge.

The victim called for a tow truck. Before the tow truck arrived, a friend retrieved the victim and they left the disabled vehicle. After exiting Route 1 and reentering it traveling north, they drove across the bridge and saw that a tow truck had arrived at the disabled vehicle.

The friend stopped the vehicle, and the victim exited and attempted to cross from the northbound side of the bridge to the southbound side. While attempting to jump he fell between the bridge spans and struck the ground below. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into this incident, and no foul play is suspected. There were lane closures on Route 1 for approximately three hours as detectives conducted their investigation on the bridge.

Narrative: On 1 November 2013 at 9:55 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 800 block of Seminole Boulevard in Salisbury for a reported domestic related altercation. The deputy learned that an altercation ensued between Kashawn Booker and a female that escalated to a physical assault when Booker reportedly punched the female in the face. During the investigation, the deputy observed signs of injury on the female that corroborated her account.  The deputy placed Booker under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Booker in the Detention Center in lieu of $30,000.00 bond.

Suspect: Luther Lashawn Brothers, 33, Chesapeake, VA

Narrative: On 2 November 2013 at 11:41 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle in which Luther Brothers of Chesapeake, VA was a passenger, for speeding on U.S. 13. During the ensuing encounter with Brothers and the driver of the vehicle, the deputy observed indicators that suggested the pair was possibly involved in illicit activity. During a pat down of Brothers, the deputy detected what was easily identified as a brick of heroin in the pants pocket of Brothers.  The deputy recovered the heroin and would subsequently weigh it at just over 40 grams. Based on the amount recovered, the deputy surmised it was intended for future distribution or sale.  The deputy placed Brothers under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Brothers in the Detention Center in lieu of $750,000.00 bond.

Narrative: On 1 November 2013 at 9:26 AM, deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported residential burglary that had just occurred. The homeowner had just come home to find the rear door kicked in. Further examination led to the discovery of a laptop computer, cash and two long guns missing from the residence. Two juvenile subjects were observed in the area but they attempted to run away when the homeowner inquired as to what they were up to. Responding deputies managed to locate both, one of them with the help of a K9. Upon apprehension, one was discovered to have the stolen laptop in his backpack while the other had the stolen cash in his backpack. One of the juveniles led the deputies to where they had hidden the stolen firearms.  Both juveniles were arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s Office pending the notification of the Department of Juvenile Services. After a review of the case, the Department of Juvenile Services placed both juveniles on electronic monitoring and released them to their parents.

Narrative: On 1 November 2013 at 2:10 PM, a deputy arrested Emily Derbyshire in connection with an assault that had taken place the week prior. In this incident, Derbyshire allegedly began assaulting another female while they were inside a vehicle after an argument ensued over text messages that Derbyshire had sent to this other female’s boyfriend. During this incident, Derbyshire reportedly kept the vehicle doors locked in an attempt to prevent the female from being able to get out of the vehicle.  Upon arrest, the deputy transported Derbyshire to the Central Booking Unit where she was processed and taken in front of the district Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner released Derbyshire on Personal Recognizance.

• On 1 November 2013 at 10:53 deputies stopped a vehicle operated by Stephen Drummond and arrested him on an outstanding arrest warrant that had been issued for possession of Marijuana. Search of Drummond post arrest revealed two baggies of marijuana in his pants pocket. Drummond was released by the District Court Commissioner upon presentation on the arrest warrant. Drummond was issued a Criminal Citation for the possession of marijuana stemming from this stop.

Could Obamacare be the biggest voter registration fraud scheme in the history of the world?

This is the bombshell assessment of a pair of conservative activists: Gregg Phillips, founder of Voters Trust, and Catherine Engelbrecht of True the Vote. Both groups are conservative nonprofits focused on election integrity.

What helped Phillips and Engelbrecht draw this conclusion is almost as amazing as the conclusion itself: Left-wing groups and media have for some time been openly discussing Obamacare as a vehicle for so-called Motor Voter registration. Motor Voter is the law that makes voter registration a part of driver’s license applications. In fact, the 1993 law also requires any government office that provides “public assistance” to make voter registration part of the process. Since many applicants applying for coverage in the Obamacare “insurance marketplace” – the infamously malfunctioning healthcare.gov website – will be eligible for Medicaid (public assistance), not “Marketplace coverage,” voter registration by law must be part of the available health insurance package.

Obamacare's Success In Enrollment Numbers: 6 People By End Of Day One; 248 By Day Two

It is now clear why according to the Obama administration there were no glitches plaguing the Healthcare.gov website administering Obamacare: because a whopping six people managed to sign up on the first day it was launched - the same day the government proudly reported previously it had received 4.7 million unique visitors - a conversion factor of, well, Div/0. By the end of the second day: 248 happy participants in a socialized healthcare ponzi scheme. It is also clear why there was nobody happier than the president when the republican party decided to shut down government on the same day as Obamacare was rolled out: because if public attention had focused on the absolute and now confirmed, disaster that the healthcare law's rollout had been, then everyone, not just the Tea Party, would be demanding a substantial delay in Obamacare.

The enrollment data comes even after the Obama administration has said it cannot provide enrollment figures from HealthCare.gov because it doesn't have the numbers. "We do not have any reliable data around enrollment, which is why we haven't given it to date," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told lawmakers on Wednesday. Turns out she did - as Reuters  and ABC report, the documents, which are labeled "war room" notes and appear to be summaries of issues with the problematic website beginning on October 2, indicate a mere six enrollments had occurred by that morning - the day after the website was launched and almost immediately crashed.

Detroit Bankruptcy Proposal Would Leave Pensioners With 16 Cents On The Dollar

It was the politicians, and not longtime city workers like Olivia Gillon, who brought Detroit to the brink of insolvency, but now Gillon can only watch as lawyers negotiating the Motor City's bankruptcy bid place a new value on her hard-earned pension: 16 cents on the dollar.

The beleaguered city, facing debt of as much as $20 billion and led by a state-appointed manager, tried nearly a year ago to renegotiate with creditors. When those talks broke down, the city filed for bankruptcy last July, but the filing was ruled unconstitutional by a judge. A series of state and federal rulings followed, culminating in a trial that began last week in which the city must show it is eligible to enter bankruptcy. That's when the frightening magnitude of the "haircut" being sought for some 21,000 retirees emerged.

“It’s wrong on every possible level,” Gillon, 68, told FoxNews.com. “I earned my pension. I retired expecting it and I feel that I should have it.”

The Delaware State Police have arrested a 77-year-old Bridgeville man Nov. 2 after a traffic stop leads to his 11th DUI.

A Delaware State trooper was driving southbound at about 6:40 p.m. on Coverdale Road just north of Hastings Farm Road when he saw a truck speeding, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

The truck was in the southbound lane and swerved into the northbound lane several times, Fournier said.

State Warns 1 Cent Storm Water Fee Is 'Insufficient'

Frederick County's 1 cent storm water fee could end up costing tens of thousands of dollars in fines, state environmental officials recently warned.

A Maryland Department of the Environment review determined the county's fee would be "insufficient" to pay for the water cleanup efforts required by a state-enforced permit.

The fee of 1 cent per eligible property is estimated to raise $487 annually for county water programs.

"We believe that this level of funding will be insufficient to support the people, programs and projects that will be necessary for the county to meet its obligations under the Watershed Implementation Plan and the new MS4 permit that we expect to issue to your county next month," stated an Oct. 25 letter written by Robert Summers, the state's environmental secretary.

In his speech that praised McAuliffe, Obama said Cuccinelli is among those who want to “tear down” the United States — a compromise-averse ideologue who prefers to “cut off funding for Planned Parenthood” rather than create jobs — and who represents a political party that he said was responsible for the government shutdown.

“Now he says it’s in the rear view mirror. It can’t be in the rear view mirror if this is your operative theory of politics,” Obama said.

On Breitbart News Sunday on Sirius XM Patriot channel 125, Virginia Republican Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli said a Terry McAuliffe administration in Virginia would be a "threat to liberty." He urged Virginians to "send Washington a message" by voting against McAuliffe on Tuesday.

Cuccinelli mentioned that McAuliffe did not think Obamacare went far enough when he advocated a public option and said President Barack Obama's appearance in Virginia on Sunday on behalf of McAuliffe was a "blessing" because it brought a "crystal-clear focus to Obamacare in Virginia and what a disaster that is."

When she walked over to investigate, Kurz saw two town employees having sexual intercourse, the attorney said.

Md. Woman Charged In Death Of Infant Daughter

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Authorities in Washington County say an intoxicated woman passed out while breastfeeding her 2-month-old daughter, leading to the infant's death.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says 22-year-old Yadina Morales of Hagerstown has been charged with manslaughter and child abuse in the girl's death, which occurred Saturday morning.

The sheriff's office says Morales was highly intoxicated and lost consciousness while trying to breastfeed. When she woke up, the child was underneath her and was unresponsive.

Dipping into 'candy bowl' can add up to 25% to paycheck

(Washington Post) Federal employees at the Department of Homeland Security call it the “candy bowl,” a pot of overtime money they have long dipped into to pad their pay even if they haven’t earned it, whistleblowers say.

This practice, which can add up to 25 percent to a paycheck, has become so routine over the last generation that it’s often held out as a perk when government managers try to recruit new employees, according to these accounts.

In a report submitted to the White House and Congress on Thursday, the federal Office of Special Counsel (OSC) details what it calls a “profound and entrenched problem” at DHS and a “gross waste of government funds.” Based on the testimony of seven whistleblowers, the OSC concludes that the pervasive misuse of overtime pay in six DHS offices, including four within Customs and Border Protection, comes to $8.7 million a year.

The employment situation in America is in a state of serious dysfunction. The problems existed before the 2008 crisis, to be sure, but they are getting worse, and the current Administration’s job-related policies are seriously deficient. Most parts of the developed world are facing similar challenges, but our focus in this section will be on the U.S., where the labor participation rate has reached a 40-year low. This is a nasty statistic, one that reveals the published unemployment figures to be a deception. In reality, five years after the crash, unemployment remains at recession levels. The fall in the labor participation rate reflects the perils of long-term unemployment, which turns millions of workers into unemployables as their skill sets rust with disuse and their attractiveness to employers diminishes.

One element in the long-term jobs picture is the march of technology. The technologies that are chewing up jobs are actually accelerating in their efficiency and their ability to perform tasks previously done by people. The fear that technology will make workers obsolete predates the industrial revolution, but the future will likely prove that this is only partially true. Technological advances may not be the death of employment, but they will require seriously creative policies to counteract their negative effects on jobs without impeding overall growth. We believe that this can and must be achieved.

It seemed a novel, relatively simple way for Virginia political candidates to engage with high school students across the state — and one that has been done for four years now.

In April, the gubernatorial campaigns of Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II were asked if they would provide videotaped responses to five questions culled from 5,300 queries submitted by high school students across Virginia.

The candidates agreed and confirmed when reminded of the project four weeks ago. But two weeks ago, Mr. McAuliffe abruptly backed out — angering administrators and fitting an emerging pattern of evading what appear to be even the most innocuous questions in the closing days of the campaign.

A black Baptist minister from Chesterfield County was sentenced Thursday to serve two years in prison for setting his front porch ablaze in a phony hate crime attack that included racist graffiti he painted to deceive police.

Olander D. Cuthrell, 41, a minister of music at Gospel Shepherd Baptist Church, told the judge he was both ashamed and embarrassed for pouring a mixture of oil and gasoline across part of his family’s front porch and igniting it March 15 after becoming overwhelmed by financial problems.
Minutes before, he spray-painted the N-word on two sides of his rental house in the 7800 block of Little Ridge Court to divert attention from himself and bolster his claim of being the target of a racially motivated attack.

America’s food security is at immediate risk, according to a report leaked this month by the New York Times. Americans should expect crop production to fall by as much as 2 percent each decade for the rest of the 21st Century.

As the world’s population and accompanying food demand continue to rise, the food supply will not keep pace, say the world’s top scientists. The leaked report, drafted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at the United Nations, is the direst yet, and departs from previous, more hopeful, reports. With greenhouse gas emissions and temperatures rising, agricultural crops, which are sensitive to both, will struggle to survive, leading to soaring prices and starving populations.

America’s drought last year, which devastated food crops, is illustrative of a trend that will become more prevalent. Yet we keep kicking the food security can down the road by reassuring ourselves that we have enough food supply and that it’s merely a matter of distribution. This is a fool’s errand.
