Governor announces mission following opening for Israeli company ELTA North America, which will create 100 new jobs in Maryland
ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 10, 2012) – As part of a continuing effort to expand Maryland’s global reach and further strengthen the State’s strong business and cultural ties internationally, Governor Martin O’Malley today announced that he will lead a delegation of business, elected and civic leaders on an eight-day economic development mission in late November to Israel.
Earlier today, the Governor joined U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. Dr. Michael Oren, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman at an event in Fulton to celebrate the opening of ELTA North America. The company, which leverages state-of-the-art technology from ELTA Systems Ltd., the world’s 4th largest radar company and a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), announced plans to create 100 new high-tech jobs in the State.
“Progress is a choice. Job creation is a choice. Investing in innovation and growing companies, while strengthening our partnerships at home and abroad is also a choice,” said Governor O’Malley. “In Maryland, we’re able to attract businesses like ELTA because we believe in innovating, educating, and rebuilding our infrastructure. Together, we choose to grow the number of companies on the cutting-edge of science and discovery that call our State home. That’s why we’re pleased to announce today that we will be leading an economic development mission to Israel to build on Maryland and Israel’s shared strengths in life sciences, cyber and homeland security, and aerospace and defense so we can attract more companies like ELTA North America.”
Israel's Ambassador to the U.S. Dr. Oren added: "Israel’s innovative culture has led to groundbreaking global contributions in high-tech, medicine, and security technology, and has enhanced our far-reaching cooperation with the State of Maryland. The opening of ELTA North America in Howard County, to provide 100 new jobs to Marylanders is a brilliant reflection this partnership, and a poignant example of U.S. support for Israel being invested directly and indirectly back in the United States. We look forward to hosting Governor O’Malley’s delegation, and expanding the dynamic economic synergy between Maryland and Israel.”
“Israel has been called ‘The StartUp Nation’ and continues to excel in innovation,” said Abba David Poliakoff, Chairman of the Maryland/Israel Development Center. “It’s a strong market for Maryland to attract new companies and jobs, as evidenced by ELTA today. We look forward to an exciting and productive trade mission to Israel with Governor O’Malley.”
While the itinerary is still being developed, Governor O’Malley is scheduled to travel to Eilat to speak at the Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy and Innovation Conference alongside Israel’s Chief Scientist Avi Hasson. He will then travel back to Tel Aviv where he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; host a breakfast reception for high-tech Israeli entrepreneurs; and participate in a wreath laying ceremony and tour of Yad V’Shem, Israel’s Holocaust Memorial. This will be Governor O’Malley’s second economic development mission to Israel, having led a delegation of business leaders there in 2008.
The Governor is also scheduled to meet with executives from ELTA Systems Ltd., one of Israel’s leading defense electronics companies and the parent company of ELTA North America. Through the efforts of the Maryland/Israel Development Center and elected officials, ELTA North America opened a 7,500-square-foot space in the growing Maple Lawn area and plans to hire more staff and grow to a full service office to include electronics manufacturing. To assist with the project, the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development approved a $300,000 conditional loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Fund (MEDAF) and Howard County is offering a property tax credit.
Nissim Hadas, president & CEO of ELTA Systems Ltd. and chairman of the board of ELTA North America spoke about his company's investment in Maryland and its plans for growth. “ELTA is embarking on a new strategy to synergize the efforts of ELTA Systems Ltd. and ELTA North America to provide premier electronic system of system capabilities and support for the discriminating requirements and needs of our U.S. customers,” Hadas said.

Governor Brown, who leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s economic development portfolio. “As the first Maryland elected official to meet with ELTA, I am thrilled that they've chosen to call Maryland home."
Maryland has long maintained ties with Israel, building on shared strengths in biotechnology, IT and aerospace and defense. Currently about 20 Israeli companies maintain offices in Maryland, including Teva BioPharmaceuticals, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and IMI Services (a subsidiary of Israel Military Industries). In 2011, Israel was Maryland’s 47th largest trading partner with $48.8 million in product exports, mostly chemicals, transportation equipment, and computer, electronic and electrical products.
The O’Malley-Brown Administration has taken significant steps to ramp up the State’s international outreach. Last year, the Governor led two historic economic development missions – one to China, South Korea and Vietnam and one to India – that netted a combined $145 million in trade and investment deals for the State and the companies that were part of the delegation. As a result, several delegations from those countries have visited Maryland in recent months, which have resulted in additional partnerships and deals for Maryland companies.
The State has also opened a number of foreign trade offices in targeted countries, including Maryland’s first Africa trade office which opened in August. In addition to Israel and Africa, the State has foreign offices in China (Shanghai), Colombia, France (Paris), Russia, South Korea (Seoul), Taiwan (Taipei), Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) and the Western Balkans (Montenegro). With the exception of the offices in China and Israel, all the State’s foreign offices are opened on a contingency basis with no up-front cost to taxpayers.

Congress Back To Work
Congress returns to work today with a full plate of bills to pass but lawmakers have little much appetite for any of them. Lawmakers however are expected to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded for another six months. Funding for food stamps would dry up if lawmakers don't pass a farm bill to replace or extend the existing law that expires at the end of the month. Other bills awaiting action include cybersecurity reform and a bailout for the Postal Service. And lawmakers aren't likely to take up the automatic budget cuts known as sequestration until after the November election.

GM Loses Over $49,000 On Every Chevy Volt
Watching Phil LeBlow providing Ford with a reacharound this morning reminded us of total farce that is both the forest and the trees of the US auto industry. We have discussed the FUBAR channel-stuffing and the subprime-lending SNAFU but now, as Reuters reports, we see the ugly truth about GM's little baby "the Volt is over-engineered and over-priced". Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as $49,000 on each Volt it builds.

Furthermore, there are some Americans paying just $5,050 to drive around for two years in a vehicle that cost as much as $89,000 to produce. And while the loss per vehicle will shrink as more are built and sold, GM is still years away from making money on the Volt, which will soon face new competitors from Ford, Honda and others.

Southern Schools Dominate List Of Best Colleges For Free Speech
Just as college students head off to campus, a list of schools that hold the First Amendment above political correctness is out — with a slew of Southern schools leading the way.
The list 
, released Wednesday by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), cites James Madison University, the College of William & Mary, the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania for protecting free speech on campus and maintaining policies honoring freedom of expression.

Mayor of NJ's Capital Arrested in Corruption Probe
Federal agents have arrested the mayor of New Jersey's capital city as part of an ongoing corruption investigation.
Trenton Mayor Tony Mack, his brother, Ralphiel, and convicted sex offender Joseph Giorgianni, are accused of conspiring to obstruct, delay and affect interstate commerce by extortion.

One reason may be optics. Obama was scheduled to deliver the speech in a stadium seating 64,000 people. But on Wednesday, after Charlotte, N.C., had been pummeled by periodic rainstorms all week, organizers moved the event to the convention hall.
The last two stadium acceptance speeches, in 2008 and 1960, were delivered in Denver and Los Angeles, where it seldom rains in the summer. That’s not true of Charlotte — or of Tampa, Fla., where Republicans took a risk by scheduling their convention at the start of hurricane season.
So Obama spoke at the same podium as Bill Clinton had the night before. The comparison was not flattering to the 44th president.
Clinton was animated, loose, constantly ad libbing, varying his gestures and expression. Obama seemed more mechanical, less fluent. The contrast with the videos shown earlier of his campaigning in 2008 was not helpful.
And, perhaps unexpectedly, John Kerry and Joe Biden delivered more interesting speeches before Obama spoke.

While this news is troubling, what’s even worse is that the Democrats, who control the Senate and the White House, have no plans to correct our economic problems.
Okay, I’ll take that back- they have no good ideas to fix the problems. Since to them more government seems to be the panacea to fix any malady, the solutions most proposed by Democrats is to just create a bigger government and to throw money we don’t have at the problem. However, it is that radical bastardization of Keynesian economics that ballooned our national debt to a whopping $16 trillion and provided us with nothing in return but a GDP of 1.7%.

‘CREEPY’? JOE BIDEN CUDDLES UP TO FEMALE BIKER DURING OHIO CAMPAIGN STOP
Vice President Joe Biden has added another item to the long list of questionable decisions he has made while serving in public office.
At Cruisers Diner in Seaman, Ohio Sunday, the Associated Press snapped a photo of the man with a female biker either on his lap or very near it. Biden‘s hand is resting on the woman’s shoulder, and his head appears to be touching her bandana as he leans in close to say something, grinning wildly.
The woman‘s companions don’t seem nearly as excited about the encounter, looking on with expressionless faces.

The omission of these key principles from the Democratic platform was the party equivalent of what journalist Michael Kinsley calls a political gaffe – when a politician inadvertently says what he really believes.
Democrat party operatives panicked when they realized that the platform, as initially drafted, showed today’s Democrats exactly for who they are – the home base for the nihilism, radical moral relativism, and welfare statism that defines today’s far left.
But the Democrats are the party of the entertainment industry. They know how to create fiction and appeal to fantasies.
So the party of the radical left brands Republicans as extremists.
The United States is still a religious nation.

Malik Zulu Shabazz, national chairman of the New Black Panther Party, stated today in a radio interview that his controversial group may deploy at voting booths in the November presidential elections, claiming such a move is needed to ensure there is no “intimidation against our people.”
The NBPP was the focus of national attention after Eric Holder’s Department of Justice dismissed voter intimidation charges against the groups leaders related to the 2008 presidential election.

I spent this week in Camp Vagina, aka the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. I call it Camp Vagina because attendees heard more about genitals than any ideas on how to fix President Obama’s broken economy. Overall, for a convention to promote a campaign with the theme of “Forward,” Democrats sure spent a lot of time looking backwards.
Trying to get the audience to look backwards makes perfect sense when you consider the endless parade of parasites and degenerates who marched across the stage.

Zombies Are Coming And The Government Wants You To Be Prepared
The Homeland Security Department says "The zombies are coming."
The federal government, tongue firmly in cheek, is urging citizens to start preparing for a "zombie apocalypse." It's all part of a public health campaign to get people ready for genuine disasters and emergencies.
Tampa vs. Charlotte
Tampa, Fla., was like the Republican National Convention delegation — older, more experienced, less excitable. Tampa has hosted the Super Bowl; the city had lots of space and nothing to prove. There was a been there/done that feel to the entire affair. Tampa Bay is used to welcoming visitors and has plenty of nice hotels to host them.
You say a hurricane is coming? No worries. They laid out some sandbags, closed up for a night and started up a day later. No need to rush a convention. People don’t come to Florida to be in a hurry.
Charlotte, N.C., is a younger, more eager town, and it drew a younger, more jazzed set of delegates. The chance to host the Democratic National Convention delegation put the city in the big time. Volunteers dotted the convention center, greeting passers-by. They went out of their way to make visitors feel welcome.

Amazon, In Switch, Will Let Kindle Users Pay To Opt Out Of Ads
The change came barely a day after Amazon on Thursday unveiled larger Kindle Fire tablets, priced from $159 to $599, to challenge Apple Inc's dominant iPad on price and additional digital content.
Amazon had said the tablets would come with ads known as "special offers" that appear when screens are locked and in the corner of the home screen, helping keep prices low. But criticism of the company mounted in online forums after reports that the company would not allow buyers to pay to block the ads as it had done with earlier tablets.
On America's Middle-Class Divide
With both political parties having concluded their respective rah-rah-fests and each vehemntly proclaiming "The Other Side" [3] as failing miserably; it appears, as Raghuram Rajan points out in his latest article [4] that while America’s presidential election campaign is superficially a debate about health care and taxes; it is much more fundamentally about democracy and/or free enterprise. As he notes, democracy implies regarding individuals as equal and treating them as such, with every adult getting an equal vote, whereas free enterprise empowers individuals based on how much economic value they create and how much property they own.
What prevents the median voter in a democracy from voting to dispossess the rich and successful? And why do the latter not erode the political power of the former?
The answer relies upon the 'dream' (American or otherwise) of a level playing field and hard-work paying off; once that middle-class hope begins to fade then the self-reinforcing benefits of democracy and free-enterprise will become self-destructive (not helped by the current parties' actions to enrage the middle-class 'working rich' against those losing faith).
The United States needs to restore the possibility of achieving the American Dream for its middle class, even while it reaffirms the historically light regulation and relatively low tax burden that have allowed enterprise to flourish.

Chinese imperial astronomers kept detailed sunspot records. They noticed that more sunspots meant warmer weather. In 1801, the celebrated astronomer William Herschel (discoverer of the planet Uranus) observed that when there were fewer spots, the price of wheat soared. He surmised that less light and heat from the sun resulted in reduced harvests.
Earlier last month, professor Richard Muller of the University of California-Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) project announced that in the project’s newly constructed global land temperature record, “no component that matches solar activity” was related to temperature. Instead, Mr. Muller said carbon dioxide controlled temperature.
Could it really be true that solar radiation — which supplies Earth with the energy that drives our climate and which, when it has varied, has caused the climate to shift over the ages — is no longer the principal influence on climate change?

On Friday I got a post card from a company stating that it was opening a new travel agency in Seaford. The post card said to call a number to receive a free cruise for two. I was wondering if any of your readers had recieved this mailing and if so did they respond and is this a fraud or a legitimate promotion. Thank you for your help.
Newspaper In Ditch
Hey Joe,
Just thought you would like to know: We received a Delmarva Crossroad’s newspaper thrown out in the ditch in front of our house tonight, (Sunday). The individuals delivering were driving so fast, most of the papers that they were throwing out were ending up in the middle of the road. I ran the delivery person down and asked them to stop throwing them out. When I went back home, I called the number on the back of the paper and left a message with our address asking to stop delivery here. Within a very few minutes an individual claiming to be John Robinson called me back (mind you I didn’t leave my phone number on my message). I informed him we did not want the paper here and also tried to inform him that the individuals delivering the paper were driving at a high rate of speed (for our neighborhood). Upon sharing this, the individual that called me (male) got argumentative. At that time, I forcefully told him “do not call me anymore”.
Upon hanging up on him, this same individual called right back. He proceeded to get very argumentative again, which escalated me to becoming very belligerent with him. Approximately 10 minutes went by and we started getting robo calls from an automatic dialer addressed thorough a weird set up of connections (which ended up being text to voice from a cell phone number), telling us that we have been removed from their publication list. Trouble is the robo dialer called four times.
I hope the computer call that we got is correct and we have been removed from their list.
I’m just wondering if anyone else feels the same way that I do. I feel quite sure I’m not the only one that does not want this paper thrown out in my yard. It seems evident that other people don’t want it either because it ends up laying on the side of the road or in ditches, never to be picked up.

We have seen several complaints come in about deliveries, radical driving, illegal flashing strobe lights on the vehicle without permits and or being an emergency vehicle, the list goes on and on similar to yours.
I have stated this from the beginning. If Robinson simply had a paper like the Coastal Dispatch, the Beachcomber, Ocean City Today and The Guide and they were all placed in specific locations where people had the opportunity to pick them up at will, that would be one thing. However, shoving it down your throats, (to me) is pretty much littering.
I would think with enough complaints to the City and County your representatives would have to do something about this nuisance. In the mean time, know that some advertisers are NOT paying to advertise in that paper and always know that Salisbury News charges $100.00 A MONTH for an ad, NOT $250.00 a week. Lost Law Licenses: Presidents Obama, Clinton, And Nixon
In my article on the letter I received from a lawyer who insisted — inaccurately — that Michelle Obama let her license to practice law go inactive when her husband surrendered his license in early 2008, I responded: “Did Romney surrender his license? No. Did either of the Clintons surrender theirs? No. Did Nixon surrender his? No.”
I was responding to the argument that it was to be expected that a candidate for the nomination of President would surrender his right to practice law. On the contrary, it had never happened before in American history.
Then I listed people who had not surrendered their licenses: Romney, both Clintons, and Nixon.
I thought this point was obvious: I was talking about the nomination. Romney is not President. Neither is Mrs. Clinton.
Ships Added To Agent Orange List
The Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) urges all Vietnam veterans to review the latest updates to a list of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard (USCG) vessels exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam Era. The list, maintained by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), is of particular interest to those former service members experiencing health problems related to herbicide exposure, as it may help expedite their claims for VA health and disability benefits.
The list will be continuously updated to include more vessels that operated primarily or exclusively on Vietnam’s inland waterways; ships that temporarily operated in these inland waterways or docked to the shore; and ships that operated in Vietnam’s close coastal waters for extended periods with evidence that crewmembers went ashore. If a veteran's service aboard one of these ships can be confirmed through his military records during the specified time frames, exposure to herbicides can be presumed and service-related benefits may be available for Agent Orange-related ailments.
“Thousands of Navy and Coast Guard veterans who served aboard ships during the Vietnam conflict experience health problems related to herbicide exposure, but their illnesses and disabilities are not automatically considered service-connected in the eyes of the VA,” explains Slawinski. “The VA restricts this type of presumptive service connection to vets who had ‘boots on the ground’ or can prove their ship operated on inland waterways. Each addition to the VA’s list of exposed vessels will make it easier for these veterans to prove exposure and will hopefully facilitate more timely determination of benefits.”

Police, Event Organizers Blame Each Other For Event Cancellation
Traffic and safety concerns combined with bad weather led to the cancellation of the second day of a two-day obstacle-course race in Frederick.
City officials say the Tough Mudder event attracted up to 20,000 participants and spectators on Saturday.

FRA has learned that the two companies have not reached an agreement and Walgreen's will not return to the ESI retail pharmacy network. Express Scripts will maintain its current retail pharmacy network of more than 57,000 pharmacies available to TRICARE beneficiaries, and Walgreen's will continue to be a non-network pharmacy provider for TRICARE beneficiaries.

Shell Starts Preparatory Drilling off Alaska
U.S. authorities granted Shell permission to begin work on the well in the Chukchi Sea, about 90 miles off the Alaskan North Slope, in late August.
"Today marks the culmination of Shell's six-year effort to explore for potentially significant oil and gas reserves, which are believed to lie under Alaska's Outer Continental Shelf," company spokesman Curtis Smith said in a writen statement. "In the days to come, drilling will continue in the Chukchi Sea, and we will prepare for drilling to commence in the Beaufort Sea."

Delmar Class Of 1971 Held Reunion This Past Weekend
The Delmar Class of 1971 decided last year that instead of getting together once every 5 or 10 years that they would hold their reunion every year from that point forward.Considering the Hosts of this reunion are very close friends of ours we have been invited each year and quite frankly have had a blast.
Talk about a group of friendly people! Classmates travel in from as far as Australia and Florida to come to this event and believe me, it's worth the trip.
Greg and Carol Tingle, (hosts) get a small group together each month throughout the year to plan for this event. Then, just days before the event they go into high gear to get everything prepared. Cooking a large pig for numerous hours is yet another chore.
In the end it takes good planning and a lot of work but it's well worth it. Great people, good times and great fellowship. You should follow their lead.

As the academic year starts up again, we’ll be hearing a lot about those schools that work miracles in unforgiving places: educational outliers that manage to produce college-bound graduates despite the poverty, crime and drugs that dominate the neighborhoods around them. But what about those schools that start out lucky, full of students from prosperous, educated families? It turns out that these schools have their outliers, too. According to a new study, even among schools that are “demographically similar” in their affluence, a small handful produce superstar students at a much higher-than-expected rate.
The authors of the study, Glenn Ellison and Ashley Swanson of MIT, identified the high-flying schools by analyzing data from the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), an annual contest in which more than 100,000 U.S. high school students participate. In their study of more than 2,000 schools that sent students to the AMC, Ellison and Swanson found “large differences among seemingly similar schools” and concluded that high-achieving students are “very far from evenly distributed.” Four percent of the schools the authors looked at produced top math students at a rate at least three times the average of all schools studied, and two percent boasted a rate five times the average. A very few were churning out math phenoms at a rate 10 times the average.

Man Who Fell From I-95 Worked As Harford County Officer
Maryland Transportation Authority police Sgt. Kirk Perez told 11 News that Charles Nelson Armetta, 29, of Joppa, was a K-9 officer for the Aberdeen Police Department. He had been with the department since 2007.
Armetta's death comes just days after a sheriff's deputy died in a crash on Thursday.

Did Ireton Vote For Or Against God – Or Both – At The DNC (and what about Ms. Mitchell)?
With both Bobbsey Twins in attendance, it’s not surprising that the Democrat circus in Charlotte last week was a reasonable facsimile of a Salisbury City Council meeting. What sealed the deal was adopting an absurd party platform that omitted any reference to God – the first time in a couple decades that the donkey lovers have so openly committed that sacrilege in public.
Although he failed to prevent that debacle, after it made the media the Emperor Obama acted promptly to correct it by ordering his assembled supporters to pay lip service to the Lord. As soon as the convention came to order on Wednesday, one of his lackeys addressed the mob for that purpose, and another debacle ensued.
It is now obvious that many if not most of the Democrats really don’t want God mentioned in their platform.
When the question was called on the motion to restore the reference to “God-given potential” it didn’t go down well with the left-leaning rabble. The voice vote was about even, and the Chair called for another, with the same result, and then another, until finally someone told him to avoid further embarrassment by simple declaring the motion adopted, whereupon the meeting was flooded with boos from the assembled buffoons.
It was impossible to tell how individual delegates voted, although in the case of Laura Mitchell can there be any doubt - she led the effort to kill the Lord’s Prayer at City Council meetings.
The next City Council meeting will be an opportunity for the dynamic duo to tell us whether they voted against God from the get-go or switched position at the command of their leader.
Also, Ireton and Mitchell should disclose the source of funds for their trip to Charlotte last week. And Jimmy should also disclose whether he or the Democrat party paid for the substitute teacher for his classes, not the Board of Education (ie – taxpayers).

Men seek youth and beauty, while women focus on wealth and status — evolutionary psychologists have long claimed that these general preferences in human mating are universal and based on biology. But new research suggests that they may in fact be malleable: as men and women achieve financial equality, in terms of earning power and economic freedom, these mate-seeking preferences by gender tend to wane.
The idea behind the evolutionary theory is simple: biologically, sperm are cheap — men make 1,500 sperm per second on average. In contrast, eggs are expensive; typically, women release just one egg a month and each baby girl is born with her full lifetime’s supply of egg cells. (Yes, this means that the egg from which you sprang was formed inside your maternal grandmother.) What’s more, pregnancy costs a woman nine months, while the initial male contribution to parenthood generally requires no more than a few minutes.
As a result, evolutionary theorists argue, women will be far more selective than men about their sexual partners, and they will tend to seek those with the most resources to invest in their children. Men, on the other hand, can afford to be less choosy. Chicago Teachers To Go On Strike After Talks With District Fail
The Chicago Teachers Union says its members will go on strike Monday for the first time in 25 years.
The union says contract talks with the district failed late Sunday night over issues including benefits and job security.
"We will be on the (picket) line," Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said Sunday night, calling it a difficult decision and one the union hoped could be avoided.

Illegals Not In Health Plan
Getting healthy young people to buy health insurance is key to making President Obama’s health care overhaul work, but his administration is excluding roughly one million illegal immigrant youth allowed to remain in the country from the law’s mandates and benefits.
Officials quietly ruled last week that a new group of young immigrants to whom Mr. Obama has granted temporarily legal status may not partake of the law’s major benefits, nor are they subject to the mandate to buy insurance.
The move appeases Republicans — who have long claimed that the 2010 law will allow those in the country illegally to claim health benefits.

Schools Using Microchips To Track Students
Some schools are finding a high tech way to track the whereabouts of students.
Radio frequency identification device chips have been used to monitor cattle in Texas, but now school districts in Houston and San Antonio are using the devices to register the movements of students. The chips are embedded in student ID cards.
