The Chicago Teachers Union says its members will go on strike Monday for the first time in 25 years.
The union says contract talks with the district failed late Sunday night over issues including benefits and job security.
"We will be on the (picket) line," Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said Sunday night, calling it a difficult decision and one the union hoped could be avoided.

16% raise over 4 years and it's rejected. Fire them all!
who pays for all of their red t shirts
You should work becasue you love the job not the pay. These teachers don't care. The unions are what's taking their money from them. Dump the union dues than your 16% will rise to 21%.
There was a 60 Minute episode on this "dead beat" state because they do not pay their bills. They don't pay their bills because they have NO MONEY. They should be happy with what income they have.
Every one is going to have to sacrifice to get this country back on track.
"You should work becasue you love the job not the pay. "
I love how this is always the mantra when it comes to teachers. Can't pay your bills? Doesn't matter, you should be working for the love of the job, you greedy jerk. Oh, and having to buy all those supplies out of your own pocket? Yeah, we won't give you a raise to cover expenses because you should be working for the love of the CHILDREN, you greedy, socialist bums!
I would LOVE to see some other professions get treated the way society treats our teachers. It's a damn disgrace.
Lol 1:05. As it applies to this case, if you read the article (or any others on this story), you would see that the average salary for a teacher in Chicago is $76,000. If you were one of these union members and "Can't pay your bills?" on 76k a year, I think you have other problems.
Your right about one thing, it is a disgrace.
@1:05---Absolutely!!! I have been a teacher for 12 years.Very few people realize just how much money teachers spend on their classrooms and students. Each year I spend hundreds of dollars on school supplies for the children who can not afford them, books for my classroom so that my students have books to read for pleasure, materials for my classroom so that my students can create projects, etc. Many other jobs have a fund for work expenses--teachers don't. Instead of always critizing teachers, maybe one day the public will wake up and realize how much teachers do for the children in our community.
1:05 First, I’m a firefighter. If you think we get paid a lot check again. I do it because I love the job. Do I wish I had more money? The answer is yes. Who doesn’t want more money? As for the supplies you must have not sent anything with your kids to school. Parents are paying more and more every year to send their kids to school. As for your comment "greedy socialist bums" I think we know which end of the donkey you are.
