Here Comes The Snow!

Significant snow is expected across the East Coast on Christmas Night through Monday. Blizzard conditions are more likely in New England and possible across New York City and the mid-Atlantic Coast.

The low pressure is now expected to become stronger farther south and track closer to the coast. This means more than 6 inches can fall from eastern North Carolina to New England.

Early Christmas morning, snow has spread across northern Mississippi, Alabama and most of Tennessee. Lighter snow is falling across most of the Ohio Valley into Virginia.

On Sunday into Monday, the storm will parallel the Northeast coast and strengthen in the process. There is growing confidence here at AccuWeather.com that the storm will be close enough to the coast to bring a heavy snowfall to most of the Eastern Seaboard.

Accumulations from the Delmarva to New England will be at least 6 inches with more than a foot possible.

The Amazing Grace Of Christmas Morn

The malls and the Main Streets fall silent. The ringing of cash registers fade in ghostly echoes across silent streets. But the Christ born in a manger 2,000 years ago lives through the centuries, liberating the hearts of sinners and transforming the lives of the wicked.
The authentic story of the redeeming power of the Christmas message is illustrated in the incredible life of an English slaver named John Newton, born 300 years ago into a seafaring family in England. His mother was a godly woman who died when John was 7, and he recalled as the sweetest remembrance of childhood the soft and tender voice of his mother at prayer.
His father married again, and John at 11 went to sea with him. He eagerly adopted the vulgar life of seamen as he grew older, though the memory of his mother's faith remained. "I saw the necessity of religion as a means of escaping hell," he recalled many years later, "but I loved sin."
On shore leave, he was seized by a press gang and taken aboard HMS Harwich. Life grew coarser. He ran away, was captured, put in chains, stripped before the mast, and flogged. "The Lord had by all appearances given me up to judicial hardness," he recalled. "I was capable of anything. I had not the least fear of God, nor the least sensibility of conscience. I was firmly persuaded that after death, I should merely cease to be."
The captain of the Harwich traded him to the skipper of a slaving ship, bound for West Africa to take aboard wretched human cargo. "At this period of my life," he later reflected, "I was big with mischief and, like one afflicted with a pestilence, was capable of spreading a taint wherever I went." John's new captain took a liking to him, however, and took him to his home on an island off the African coast, where his wife, a beautiful and cruel African princess, waited for him. She soon grew jealous of her husband's friendship with John.John fell ill, and when the captain sailed he left John in his wife's care.
The ship was barely over the horizon when he was thrown into a pigsty. The jealous wife blinded him, and left him in delirium to die. He did not die, but was kept in chains and fed swill from her table. Word spread through the district that a black woman was keeping a white slave, and many came to taunt him. They threw stones at him, mocking his misery. He would have starved if captured slaves, waiting for a ship to take them to the Americas, had not shared their meager scraps of food.
When the captain returned five years later, John told how he had been treated. His old friend scoffed, and called him a liar and a thief, but agreed to take him home to England. John was treated ever more harshly on the voyage, fed only the entrails of animals butchered for the crew's mess. "The voyage quite broke my constitution," he recalled, "and the effects would always remain with me as a needful memento of the service of wages and sin."
Like Job, he became a magnet for adversity. When his ship crashed in a storm he despaired that God's mercy remained after a life of hostile indifference to the Gospel. "During the time I was engaged in the slave trade," he said, "I never had the least scruple to its lawfulness." Yet the wanton sinner, the arrogant blasphemer, the mocker of the faith was at last driven to his knees: "My prayer was like the cry of ravens, which yet the Lord does not disdain to hear."
Miraculously, he was rescued, and made his way home to England to reflect on the mercies God had shown him in his awful life. He fell under the preaching of George Whitefield and the influence of John Wesley, and was born again into the new life in Christ. Two days short of Christmas 1807, he died at the age of 82, and left a dazzling testimony to the miracle of Christmas. "I commit my soul to my gracious God and Savior, who mercifully spared and preserved me, when I was an apostate, a blasphemer and an infidel, and delivered me from Africa into which my obstinate wickedness had plunged me." He set down the story of his life, and it became the most beloved hymn of Christendom.

Christmas

Let me begin by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Even though the Christmas season has changed dramatically since I was enthralled by the prospect of the arrival of Santa Claus, everyone can still bring back the spirit of Christmas.

           

 When I was in the second grade in 1950, St. Francis held a midnight Mass. Being one of the two smallest boys, I was one of the lead pair of acolytes in the Christmas procession that led to the altar. The adrenaline rush that got me up the aisle quickly wore off and I was just like any other seven-year old at that time of night. When we had finished marching up the aisle and were seated, I think I immediately fell asleep. I continued this ritual throughout my early years at St. Francis.

           

Christmas did not officially begin until well after Thanksgiving. It was about the second week of December that the stores started decorating and displaying their Christmas wares. The stores downtown all had fabulous merchandise. White and Leonard Drug Store had a toy display set up on the second floor. L. W. Gunby Hardware Store had a special “not-for-sale” Christmas display in their window that showed many antique toys.

           

The annual Christmas parade was always on a Saturday. This was because the stores were prohibited from opening on Sunday, and the local merchants loved the fact that the parade brought many shoppers downtown. The parade had bands from the local high schools and many floats from local organizations.. At the end of the parade was good ol’ St. Nick. We had one motorcycle in the Salisbury Police Department fleet at that time, and it was always ridden by Sgt. Paul Barnett. In time, he donned a red suit and became known as Sgt. Santa Claus.

           

 Many organizations spent a lot of time on their floats, and the results were everything a young boy full of the season could ask for. It always seemed to instill in everyone a generous amount of Christmas cheer that carried over throughout the entire season.

           

Usually, the majority of presents were clothes that were sorely needed. But there was always that special large toy that I had been asking for since October. One year, my father and mother (Santa) got me a tin filling station. Years later, they admitted that putting it together after I went to bed was quite a task for my Pop. Now, he was a mechanical engineer, but I don’t think his work included tin filling stations. He was much better at the gas pumps at real filling stations. It was a great thrill when I raced downstairs on Christmas morning and saw it.

           

We were never the type of family that scrimped all year and went all out at Christmas. As I came into my years of having a car, I might get a set of tires in September along with a hearty “Merry Christmas”. My father’s brothers and sisters were all in Buffalo, and their package was always eagerly anticipated, because they always gave toys. Mom set up her nativity scene every year with the babe Jesus carefully missing until Christmas day, and we always had a real tree. The only outside lights we had was one string of Christmas lights around the front door. Early on, my parents didn’t put up the tree until my sister and I had gone to bed. That must have been a lot of work in a very short time. But, I’m sure the looks on our little faces as we came down the stairs on Christmas morning made it all worthwhile.

           

Christmas can still be a time of magic if you just remember why we are celebrating the occasion. No matter what the stores proclaim in their never-ending pursuit of the almighty dollar, we can still wish someone a “Merry Christmas”. If you have the proper spirit, nothing can diminish the joy you will feel at this very special time of the year.

A Concerned Salisbury Citizen

300 Free Turkey Giveaway 100% Successful

 300 turkeys arrived right on time from Sysco.

 We also provided stuffing and canned goods to everyone.

 Six pickup truck loads of food lined the new Pohanka Dealership.

 One, (out of four) truck load of turkeys.

 Our Grandson joined us and had a blast!

 Cakes By David, G.A. Harrison & Joel Maher, (advertisers and contributor)
joined us to help give away turkeys.

Cars wrapped around Pohanka Toyota for their Christmas Dinner. 

 Adam Roop joined us and quite frankly had a blast.

 Many Employees of the Pohanka Automotive Group helped the entire time.

Who would have ever thought that 300 turkeys would be a perfect number to give away to those families in need this Christmas. Well, it was. We were supposed to start at 5 PM and end at 7 PM but people were coming to Pohanka the entire day to see if they could get their free turkey.

At one point, (around 4 PM) cars were lining up, so much so we had to get started because we were afraid Rt. 13 would get backed up and cause a traffic problem. That being said, we started giving them away around 4 PM and we didn't stop until every last turkey was gone. Believe it or not, it ended right at 7 PM.

I mentioned I had gone to Giant and bought all of their corn and green beans, (yes, they even went into the back and brought out their stock from the back) and I also bought out everything WalMart North had for stuffing. So much so, we filled 6 pickup trucks worth of turkeys, stuffing and canned goods.

Some readers from Salisbury News stopped by and delivered additional food to distribute and we can't thank you enough! Out of hundreds of canned goods, there were only 4 cans left when we were done, so it worked out perfectly. Every single turkey was given away and I have to tell you, it was an unbelievable experience. Folks, I almost broke out into tears several times from so many who delivered stories about how many of these people had nothing to provide for their families this year. What a gift for me and the rest of those who helped make this possible.

I first want to thank our advertisers for making this possible. Without YOU, this would not have been possible. To my very dear friends at Pohanka Automotive Group, THANK YOU! Folks, these people  stood in the freezing cold, (wind blowing like crazy) the entire time and helped load the turkeys and food and then handed them out wishing every single person a Merry Christmas and God Bless.

Firefighter Drives Self To Hospital After Shooting

A D.C. firefighter is in critical condition after being shot several times overnight. He was not working at the time.

He drove himself to Washington Hospital Center, arriving in a vehicle marked by bullet holes.

The 25-year-old firefighter had joined the department six years ago. However, since March he's been on unpaid leave for criminal activity.

Investigators would not release his name because the firefighter is a witness in the shooting.

North And The South..Clearly Explained

It doesn't matter whether you need anything or not. You just have to go there.  Do not be surprised to find that 10-year olds own their own shotguns,  they are proficient marksmen, and their mammas taught them how to aim and shoot.  In the South, we have found that the best way to grow a lush green lawn is to pour gravel on it and call it a driveway.  AND REMEMBER: If you do settle in the South and bear children, don't think we will accept them as Southerners..  After all, if the cat had kittens in the oven, we ain't gonna call 'em biscuits.

Town Spends $17,000 To Defend $5 Fee It Charged Resident, Loses

The town of Bridgewater, NJ, just spent $17,000 in legal costs to defend its right to charge a guy $5 for a CD recording of a town council meeting. The man had argued that he should only be required to pay for the actual cost of the CD. The case went to court and the town ended up losing. The kicker? They also had to pay him back a $4.04 refund for the overage.

Cop Records Himself Detained At Walmart Receipt Check

A tipster has sent in an audio recording of himself being stopped at the Walmart doors for refusing to show them his receipt. He says that it's in his pocket and he just doesn't feel like getting it out. According to the reader, two of the men who stop him are sheriff's deputies. When he asks one of them their name, the man responds, "John Doe." Our reader, who says he is a cop of 20 years himself, says it took nearly half an hour of asking them whether they are placing him under arrest or if he can be on his way before they let him go.

The Second Amendment

A 75 year old guy made a rolling stop at a stop sign.  He was pulled over by a local deputy sheriff.  The elderly driver handed the deputy his driver's license, vehicle registration, insurance verification, and his concealed carry permit.

"Okay, Mr. Hatcher," the deputy said, "I see your CCW  permit.  Are you carrying today?"

"Yes, I am."

"Well then, better tell me what you got."

Hatcher said, "Well, I got a .357  magnum revolver in my inside coat pocket. There's a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box.  And, I've got a .22 magnum derringer in my  right boot."

"Okay," the deputy says.  "Anything else?"

"Yeah, back in the trunk, there's an AR15 and a shotgun.   That's about it."

"Mr. Hatcher, are you on your way to or from a gun range...?"

"Nope."

"Well then, what are you afraid  of....?"

"Not a damned thing...."

Something To Really Think About

Salvation Army

Hi Joe,

I saw the charts posted yesterday and noticed all the empty slots still out there.  Now, my 10 year old daughter has always loved putting money in the kettles but we've never actually volunteered to ring the bell.  I decided to call and sign us up to help out.  Brie has such a big heart and I thought it would be a good experience for her. 

We stood today at Super Fresh and rang for an hour (I wasn't sure how Brie would hold up out in the cold and wind).  Let me tell you, she had a blast out there ringing the bell and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!  She learned the value of giving our time (and not just our money) to collect the donations for this wonderful cause.  When our relief came at noon, she was so into the spirit that she didn't want to leave :)

SNOW REMOVAL FROM SIDEWALKS

The City of Salisbury wants to remind property owners that the sidewalks throughout the City shall be free of snow to ensure safe travel of pedestrians.

Section 12.04.060 Removal of snow from sidewalks--Notice--Enforcement of the Salisbury Municipal Code currently requires that:

All owners and persons in possession of any land or premises situated on any street within the city where sidewalks are laid shall remove the snow therefrom the entire length thereof for a width of at least four feet and may deposit the same along the remaining portion of such sidewalks nearest the curb within six hours after it has ceased falling, unless the same shall have fallen between the hours of five p.m. and seven a.m., in which case it shall be removed before two p.m. In the event that the snow is not removed within the time and manner above provided, the owner or person in possession shall be notified to forthwith remove the same and, in the event of a failure to do so, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. In addition thereto, the city may cause the same to be removed as above specified and charge the cost thereof against the owner or occupant, to be recovered by suit.
(Prior code § 136-6)

Baltimore Grand Prix To Make Grand Impact

APPREHENSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SUSPECT

During the past week, a warrant investigator, TFC Christopher Paschal, from the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack, researched the current whereabouts of a Robert Neil Boyd, 62, formerly of Braddock Heights, Frederick County, in 2006. Boyd has had an open warrant, since 2006, for numerous counts of possession of child pornography, all misdemeanor offenses in Maryland.

TFC Paschal’s investigation revealed Boyd was currently residing in Tennessee. On December 21, 2010, TFC Paschal contacted the Blount County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee, requesting further investigation and to confirm this information. The residence was confirmed.

TFC Paschal presented the evidence to the Frederick County States Attorney’s Office and requested the warrant be made extraditable east of the Mississippi River. The request was granted, and the warrant was forwarded to Deputy Justin McClure, Blount County Sheriff’s Office. Dep. McClure apprehended Boyd at the Tennessee residence without further incident.

During the course of the apprehension and investigation, the Blount County Sheriff’s Office unveiled new evidence of possession of child pornography at Boyd’s home. Soon after, a search warrant was executed at the Tennessee residence. Additional evidence was seized.

Boyd was subsequently charged, in Tennessee, for possession of child pornography and is currently being held on a $100,000 bond. The Maryland State Police warrant will be used as a detainer for Boyd’s continued incarceration. The possession of child pornography is a felony in the State of Tennessee.

Lieutenant Michael Brady, Commander of the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack stated, “This is an example of excellent police work on the part of TFC Paschal, the Office of the State’s Attorney in Frederick County, and the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement is dedicated to bring criminals to justice, especially those who victimize children through child pornography. Mr. Boyd ran from the law and was caught, and he will have his day in court”.

Needy Elderly

I think what you and your advertisers are providing for those less fortunate is a wonderful work of God. It shows many that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well in Wicomico County.

I'd like to take the opportunity to share something with you and your readers, if I may. Some years ago the mother of a very dear friend became ill. Her blood pressure was way off the charts. She was on medication for this problem yet something was going wrong. One of her daughters took her to the doctor and found, through conversation with her mother, that she had not been refilling her prescription. You may wonder why she was not having the prescription refilled. It turns out, this proud old woman, that worked all of her life, right up until she was 88 years old, would not ask anyone for help. She lived on her social security as best she could. When prices started rising her income was not enough to meet all of the necessities in life. She chose to alternate, month to month, what she would purchase. The choices were groceries or medication. This is a dilemma many of our elderly neighbors face daily. Do they eat or do they take needed medication? Imagine having to make that decision. Her daughters contacted social services, hoping they would offer at least food stamps. Social Services allotted her $10 per month in food stamps. This would buy milk and bread, maybe but could she be expected to live on $10 per month in groceries? She owned her home, therefore she was not eligible for anything more than $10. Fortunately, she had adult children that were able to help her meet her needs once they found out what was going on with her. She was even more fortunate than many elderly because she never had to make the choice between medication and groceries again.

Having shared this situation with you I would hope that only those truly in need will take advantage of the generous gift of food this Christmas. Maybe they will think about their neighbors and give them a ride into town to receive a turkey, we can only hope.

So while we're all trying to do all we can for others, keep in mind, children are not the only ones in need, their grand and great grandparents might also need a little help from us.
