Teachers in Virginia's largest school district have developed a new "anti-racist" and "culturally responsible" curriculum that will be available to students as early as this fall.
Social studies teachers from Fairfax County collaborated with other Virginia public school teachers to revamp their history curriculum, using a framework from Teaching Tolerance, the educational arm of the liberal nonprofit Southern Poverty Law Center. The new curriculum encourages students to "examine materials, events, and institutions critically attending to power, position, and bias" and will be available for use in 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 11th-grade classrooms.
Colleen Eddy, Fairfax County Public Schools social studies coordinator, said the new curriculumaddresses the "overrepresentation of white and Eurocentric history" and the lack of "diverse perspectives" in education. Eddy singled out the district's U.S. history courses in particular, for which she says African-American history "deserves a truer and fuller account."
Teaching Tolerance’s list of "Essential Knowledge" for third through fifth grade students includes teaching that "the United States was founded on protecting the interests of white, Christian men who owned property." It also says slavery was foundational to the growth of the U.S. economy and the country’s founding documents were created to protect the institution of slavery.
Southern Poverty Law Center, known for including conservative organizations on its list of "hate groups," created Teaching Tolerance to promote "anti-bias" and "social justice" education in classrooms.
Virginia’s social studies curriculum is due to be revised in 2022 and is currently being reviewed by Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D.) commission on African American History Education.

I am not STUPID. If teachers tell us they are not reeded, Why must we pay them? It Walmart tells us that some employees are not needed, they are laid off. Has something changed?

I’m surprised that there are still some white people living in Fairfax County. The last time I was Fairfax the vast majority of people I saw where the so called “minorities”. It was shocking how few white people I saw.
I saw racism in the Federal Government in the 60s - reverse discrimination. Blacks being cared for because of their skin color. I didn't recognize it at first being from a small coal mining town in Penna we never saw a black person in our town. Not that we didn't allow blacks - it was more like Blacks didn't want to work in the mines.
After 40 years working in the Government in DC - it became very clear over the years that your success is based on your skin color - and it "ain't" white.

Thank God, i have worked hard enough to keep my grand children away from this government education disaster. I had a 3rd grader from Va public school walk into my office with her grandfather and I noticed her looking at the cardboard cut out of President Trump.This is a beautiful white child full of life and I ask her who is that referring to the cut out of the President . She says Trump and he is bad . I ask why , hardly believing my ears and she says her teacher told her he was bad . I try and convince her that is a good man who loves his country but this teacher has already corrupted her mind.Its sad to see this beautiful white children being taught to hate themselves, their country and their culture in favor of a culture of failure and is doomed to fail.
The Democrats once again are pushing segregation. The fools can't see whats right in front of them. Martin Luther King would be rolling in his grave. Fellow blacks come off of the Democratic plantation.

does have a basis in fact even though some do not want to admit it. Slavery did help the US to grow as a nation and the greater push for the abolitionist movement came out of the industrial revolution when machines could do more work, faster, and for less than slaves. Some of the views they want to push are not popular but have a basis in fact.
What I take issue with is the MANNER IN WHICH THEY ARE PRESENTED. If they are presented as facts without emotional connotations and ALL SIDES ARE PRESENTED. Fine. I have known history teachers who have taught that there were Africans involved in the slave trade and they still have their jobs because they presented the irrefutable evidence to back it up.
History is not pretty and their are multiple viewpoints of the same topics. In order for people to truly become open minded they need to learn about both sides.
For example, among the books I have read about the Holocaust I have also read Mein Kampf. I read it because I wanted to understand why so many people could have been lead to take part in such horrific atrocities. I did not read it because I wanted to follow that path but to gain a deeper understanding of why did that happen.
History needs to be taught from multiple viewpoints and discussed from multiple perspectives. I DO NOT LIKE THE IDEA OF ONE "PERSPECTIVE" BEING TRADED FOR ANOTHER.
