Maryland leaders ending premium pay for state employees during coronavirus pandemic

BALTIMORE —Maryland state leaders plan to end premium pay for state employees who have to work during the coronavirus pandemic.

The workers affected would include correctional officers, hospital employees and other workers deemed essential and mission-critical personnel.

State leaders said the extra pay is no longer necessary as they believe agencies have implemented proper procedures to protect employees.

I'm one of those employees. So the governor now deems us as non essential and we now have to report to work each morning anyway and worry if the person working next to me or the person I have to deal with in the public is infected with this virus?

I know many of us are no longer going to work voluntary overtime or take get unpaid comp time for the work we have to perform. There were some in my office who didn't come in because of this.

Other offices like the MVA don't have to work and yet are getting administrative leave, but rest of us still have to work no longer receive hazard pay for coming into work.

My building recycles the air in it. There are no windows to open and if someone get a cold or flu, we all eventually get sick. This happened to us last year and during the Christmas season.

Don't be surprised if many of us call out sick because of this! I can tell you personally the workload is already a week behind due to many thousands of cases that are still unprocessed due to a shortage of labor. It's only going to get worse!

Many of us were coming in early and staying late and working on the weekends to get the work out.

Well as to today that has all ground to a halt due the the governor's actions today.

I have to call complete and utter bullshit on this decision. It's hazardous duties, so they all should get hazard duty pay. All to save money no doubt, but at what cost? Damn shame the "Leaders" have their heads so far up their asses they can't see what a morale killing decision this will be. Stay safe Maryland.

Why do you feel you deserve to get paid more for doing the same job?

seriously people, all the employees at the jail were making 2.5 hourly pay, for coming to work like normal..... in the mean time, there are people out there, getting ZERO pay. some of us are lucky enough to get regular straight time. 2.5 is a LITTLE over the top.

You got people out getting paid, and you can't reward the ones towing the line until this is over. Wow

Something called comar that will be giving all employees at eci case management/ officers priority pay for essential employees during state of emergency that reported. Look it up union. It is in black and white. The governor nor dbam can change comar. I smell an attorney visit soon with a class action lawsuit.

They signed up for it. If they don't like it plenty of others will step in.

Let’s see how much clout the unions have. Premium pay is in their contracts.

Private sector people are still working, they get no hazard pay. Good for you and your contracts, etc.

Some of us are working and our daycare providers ditched us, now we have to manage to work and find a way to watch and teach our kids.

moral of story ... life's not fair

I'm not outraged, i'm Moving on !
