Thousands of dead monarch butterflies on Kent Island have residents wondering why and how

KENT ISLAND, Md. (ABC7) — Thousands of monarch butterflies have turned up dead in a community on Kent Island. What killed them remains a mystery.

People in the Bayside neighborhood found the bright orange butterflies on the ground Monday morning. Several people gathered them in buckets.

A Facebook post showing an image of the monarchs has gone viral. When ABC7's Brad Bell visited on Wednesday, he had no problem finding dozens of the butterflies still on the ground.

Mosquito spray.

The late season chemicals they are using for mosquitos where the temp has rose up these past days ... at night when the butterfly goes dormant he inhales the fumes and dies.... No I’m not a tree hugger or an animal freak But they sprayed the same night right in my community I had to go and change the water bowls and bring my dog in ... You could smell it in the air

The same thing happened years ago at our home in Nanticoke just after they sprayed for mosquitoes. I found 15 dead monarchs in my front yard. The county tried to say it had nothing to do with the spraying and they all must have died of natural causes in one pile in my front yard. Bologna!

Poison would be the most probable cause. Let's see the lab results.
