Some companies are switching to four-day work weeks

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) — Labor Day is the next three day weekend we have to look forward to.

But some companies have the luxury of a three-day weekend, every weekend. Some companies are switching to four-day work weeks.

WSBT 22 found a local company that has adopted this schedule.

Transcend Orthotics and Prosthetics in South Bend has four 10-hour days a week. Though the days are long, employees say there's nothing better than waking up on Friday morning knowing they have a three-day weekend.

Nope. Wage & hour said only after 40, & there is no penalty for no meal break, last I had occasion to check. If your contract, union or otherwise, stipulates so, that's the only protection in place for workers.

No you do not.
This is the law you friggin moron.

The federal overtime provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Unless exempt, employees covered by the Act must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay.

Incorrect on the law and paying OT after 8 hrs. Law requires OT after 40 hrs. Many companies have an OT after 8 policy y, but that's not the law.

I've got a better schedule. 12 hrs days. 4 one week and 3 the next. 8 hrs of OT built into your schedule. 3 and 4 day weekends all the time, possibly 5 around a holiday. 12 hr days are not for girly men, however!

4:12, anything over 40 hrs. is consider overtime, not anything over 8 hrs.

Done 4-10 hour days for 20 years. Long days. Rather have the 5-8 hour a days.

I did a crazy shift when we were short handed which was
two 12 hour days and two days off and then three twelve hour days and two days off and then two twelve hour days and three days off. Upper management tried to sell it to us that every other week we only worked 24 hours.
But you spent part of your time off sleeping or resting up for that brutal 60 hours the week before.
I was so happy when we went to ten hour days that I didn’t worry that we would never get our 8 hour shifts back. It is hard if you have a family because you miss out on so much because all your days off don’t always fall on a weekend. However a Mon-Thur ten hour day shift sounds pretty good if you don’t need to pay for child care and you are off on the weekends. Sometimes you do what you have to to keep a job.

Sorry I wrote 4.12 That is California law not Md... my bad

The FLSA does not require premium pay for daily overtime or premium pay when an employee works on a Saturday, Sunday or a holiday. Currently, Alaska, California, Nevada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands all have daily overtime laws for working over eight hours in a day.

You are totally wrong. Daily overtime is only a union negotiated benefit, not a law. The "law" is overtime after a total of 40 hours has been worked in a week. A non-union 40 hour work week in four days requires no overtime pay at all. Farm labor doesn't have any overtime laws, at all.
