Somebody Should Have Died’ In Pontoon Capsizing, Occupant Says

OCEAN CITY — A rented pontoon boat capsized near the Route 50 bridge last Thursday sending all 15 passengers into the swirling water.

Around 1 p.m. on Aug. 1, Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) received a call for a capsized pontoon boat near the Route 50 Bridge. Connor Tressler, 19, of Dauphin, Pa., was one of 15 occupants on the rented pontoon along with three family members, including his mother, two brothers and friends.

Tressler said the group had rented the pontoon boat and enjoyed an afternoon on the water before running aground just north of the Route 50 Bridge on their way back to the rental operation on Talbot Street. The boat was reportedly rated for 16 passengers and was carrying 15, all of whom ended up in the water.

“We had 15 people on board, which was probably way too many,” he said. “There was also a weight limitation and we were probably over that by 400 or 500 pounds. My younger brother and his three friends were with us and the lightest one of them is 220 pounds. The rental company didn’t weigh us or caution us we were too heavy. They just sent us on our way.”

I've watched the boat traffic and it's nearly as congested as route 90 going into ocean City. Then you have people operating boats in unfamiliar waters.

If you thought you were over weight , why did you get on the boat? Bunch of dumb a$$ stupid people , now you blame the rental company , grow some balls and get real.

Boating mishaps can always be contributed to carelessness. Same applies to accidents with OC buses. Complain all you want but these accidents could all be prevented. Just pay attention.

Big letters on the boat it says 16 passengers OR X Amount of WEIGHT. It’s NOT THE BOATS FAULT humans In the boat caused it Take responsibility for your own actions.

so now it's the rental company's fault? stupidity of the so called captain is more like it!

maybe the rental company thought they had common sense enough to know what the weight was. Maybe now because of their stupidity the rental com should put in place rules and better guidelines of taking precaution due to the weights of the passengers. Now days i guess you can't depend on people to have common sense.

He ran aground! He crashed the boat into the land! Idk why they are talking about him and his family full of fat asses but I’m glad that the fat people had a bad day

Sure, make the rental company weigh everyone who wants to board a rented boat and then watch all the obese Americans complain about discrimination against fat people and try to sue the boat rental company, when they have to haul their fat asses up onto a scale before they can board the rented boat.stupid people want the right to make stupid decisions while at the same time having the right to sue someone else for their stupid decisions.

It seems every time there is an accident on the assawoman it seems it's some moron renting a boat. Overloaded boats, riders outside the railing, boats crashing into each other, boats running around, boats running over children.
OC IF THEY RENT A BOAT MAKE THEM RENT A CAPTAIN TOO!!!!

So you ran it aground and its the renters responsibility. You knew about the weight capacity but chose to ignore it. I wonder if their was alcohol involved you are clearly under the influence of something.

Come on, all you ambulance chasing lawyers. Here we go. If the occupants of that boat know so much about how overweight, etc. then they should not have rented or gone out in that boat. Any excuse to sue somebody. That fat bunch need to take responsibility for their own dumb choices . Stop blaming everyone else. Always looking for a quick buck.

I can tel you all are uncircumcised brits. Don’t know a damn thing about anything. The boat said it was meant for 16 people. That’s 170 lbs per person. They obviously weren’t a bunch of teenage girls starving themselves. When you send a group of 15 people with 11 of them being 13-17 and not say weight? Keep petting your cats and bashing other people for something you have no idea what the hell is going on.
