Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich (D) told Maryland Matters in an interview last week that Maryland shouldn’t just legalize pot, “They should let Maryland farmers grow, and the state should process and sell. And take every dime of revenues.” According to Elrich, the Colorado model — where the state legalizes the drug and collects sales tax from retail sales — misses an opportunity for much greater revenue.[i]
Demonstrating why he is known as “Comrade Elrich,” the County Executive said:
“What’s the justification for giving [the profits] to a bunch of private guys who are rich, so they will get richer, and then you’ll be sitting there with crumbs in your hand, when you could have all of it?”
Elrich promotes the idea to fund the Kirwan Commission educational spending recommendations. Says Elrich, “I’ve talked with [Senate President Mike] Miller and when he goes through all the things you’re going to have with Kirwan, you’re not going to get to the number they need, even putting legalized pot in there, because all you’re going to do is get the [sales] taxes.”

Alcohol should be illegal, I've seen more damage to lives from a drunk than I have from a pothead! Tell that to the families who have lost someone because of a drunk driver, most pot-head's would not do that, other drugs are not in the same category of weed, other drugs (pills, heroin, cocaine etc) kill and are the devil they should be a schedule 1 drug not weed. How many people do you know that died of weed overdose? What about the other drugs and alcohol? That's my point! I had a close family friend die because of a drunk driver, A family member had 5 school mates that died of drug overdoses. Haven't heard of any fatalities of weed overdose!
We are schitzo on this topic. We're determined to fight the opioid crisis. Want manufacturers to pay for selling a product that's legal to manufacture. Some want to continue to legalize use and possession of marijuana. Amoral legislators will legalize anything they can tax in order to spend.
Alcohol abuse is also a problem, particularly when combined with driving. But as we read arrest reports more often than not alcohol is being abused, hard drugs are present and marijuana is often on hand as well. And of course these misdirected angels are frequently packing heat; rotsa ruck getting a permit for a normal citizen.
If people were just screwing up their lives at home, that would be one thing. But when they get behind the wheel under the influence of whatever they've been using it becomes everyone's issue.
I strongly oppose making it legal or easier to abuse marijuana. Dopers gonna doper but it sets the stage for more serious drug problems. And of course smoking anything but weed is verboten.
MADD will never let that happen.
