BERLIN – Citizen concerns about a chemical spill at Berlin Falls Park dominated a town council meeting this week.
Following a vote by the council to spend more than $107,000 for cleanup of the June spill, residents criticized municipal leadership for not addressing the issue sooner. They said officials should have been aware of any issues with the property when they purchased it.
“We bought this for $2.5 million and we didn’t look in one building?” resident Shaun McGowan said.
On Monday, the council voted unanimously to pay $107,524.83 to Chesapeake Environmental Services for cleanup at Berlin Falls Park following the chemical spill that occurred in late June as several old buildings in the park were being demolished. While there was no discussion at the time of the vote, the spill was the sole topic of concern voiced by citizens during the public comment portion of the meeting. When asked about the cause of the spill, Town Administrator Laura Allen said she couldn’t comment at this point.

Berlin should be elated if they can get that property cleaned up for only $107,524.83. I'm very surprised that much money hasn't been wasted on a study about it yet. "Stop, wait a minute, let's not jump headfirst into this clean up so fast. Maybe we should wait a couple years."

Berlin residents loves all of these tax and spend bills... They just got a 30% land tax increase, along side water and sewer fee increases,for nothing just so the rainy day fund can be filled up... But the end game is really to get more taxes out of you, because next year or the year after you will see the same tax hike... Now on top of the county is wanting to raise taxes on you people in Berlin, and raise taxes for hotels and stuff like that... Now Berlin still wants to spend 100k+ to clean up a piece of land the residence didn't want the town to buy, but still did, raised taxes the residence didn't want but still did, and now will spend even more money again against the will of the people... When are you dumb ass retards going to ever give a shit about anything???? When are you going to stand up??? When are you going to recall these pieces of shit politicians??? After you lost your home???? You dumb ass people who think it will ever affect you or that you can just move, I dare you, so I can show you how stupid you are... Taxes FOLLOW EVERYONE EVERYWHERE, if it happens in Berlin, then SBY will do it, then fruitland and so on and so forth...
