BERLIN – Cleanup is underway after a chemical spill at Berlin Falls Park.
Hazmat crews were in the park Wednesday evening to begin the cleanup process after a contractor hired to demolish several buildings on the site destroyed tanks filled with what’s believed to be soda ash that had been stored in one of the structures.
“Per town sources, preliminary findings indicate the contractor hired to demolish the buildings failed to follow protocols with chemical removal and remediation,” said Jack Orris, vice chair of the Berlin Falls Park Advisory Committee. “Tanks stored in one of the buildings were destroyed and chemicals left on the property near and around the ponds.”
In March, the town accepted a $124,000 proposal from Coastal Site Works LLC for demolition of seven small buildings at Berlin Falls Park. The demolition work had been underway for some time when a social media post Wednesday alerted town officials to the fact that there was a substance that looked like oil oozing among the debris.

I would say as soon as the town touched those tanks, it's on them. What do the rest of you think?
The ground on the entire property is contaminated.wait and see what they discover in the remains of the chicken plant.I'm sure the tax payers will foot the bill for cleanup.
It's the Town's property. All on them.
So, you're saying since the Town gets its money from us, the taxpayers, then it's all on us? Why not the contractor that caused the spill? It's on HIM!
Actually, you are incorrect in your statement. The property had been tested numerous times for quite some time previous to the purchase of the property by the town.FACT. Instead of just blurting out random unfactual opinion, why not do your research and have an educated statement to post. It is all public record. I suggest you do more research previous to throwing hypothesis and connector out there.
And once again Lowest bid results in more taxpayer dollars wasted.
Good job Laura!
Town Administrator Laura Allen told the council that several companies had attended a pre-bid meeting but only two submitted proposals for the demolition work. Coastal Site Works LLC of Ocean City submitted a bid for $124,000 while Lindstrom Excavating Inc. submitted a bid for $496,000. She recommended awarding the contract to Coastal Site Works.
Why did the town by the chicken plant years ago anyway ??
Won't get much for $124,000
The town bought the plant because King Gee Williams desperately wanted a legacy. He was also of course leveraged by his handlers at the Coastal Bays who want to bankrupt the town in order to grow some new grass in the ditch branch.
The article the contractor was told everything was clear of hazardous materials.
More pissed away money
Sell this place now!!!
Look at all the oyher places for sale around the park. One owned by gee Williams...will the town buy that too for another entrance in so called park? This is not a park. It is an industrial chicen plant. Who did we the taxpayers buy this from? Oh berlin town council troy purnell who is going to build some more slumlord apartments!!
