OC Committee Recommends Helping Taxi Companies ‘To Keep These People In Business’

OCEAN CITY – Highlighting the need to support local taxi companies, a resort committee this week agreed to forward a favorable recommendation to decrease annual medallion and inspection fees.

On Monday, the Ocean City Police Commission made a favorable recommendation to lower the cost of annual medallion renewals and inspection fees in an effort to improve the business climate for local taxi companies.

“They are asking for adjustments because of Uber and Lyft being out there and increasing competition …,” committee chair and Council President Lloyd Martin said. “They were hoping for us to look at this a little harder, a little deeper, to figure out how we can tweak these fees that they incur.”

Currently, taxi companies pay $300 in annual business license fees, $500 in annual renewal fees for each medallion and between $150 and $450 in annual inspection fees to the town.

Just wait for Uber and Lyft to Lobby OC and SBY and the surrounding areas to raise taxes or fees or create one, that will help them so they think... They just did it to New York, with the road congestion tax bill that just passed... Uber and Lyft lobbied for that bill...

SALISBURY TAXIS ARE LONG OVERDUE STATE INSPECTIONS.

A fee is when you get something for your money. Government regulation isn't as expensive as they make it out to be.

So typical of the most irresponsible Mayor and Council the Town has ever had. First they over regulate then tax the industry to death, then try to save them. Christ just put your parking meters everywhere and raise the room tax more until no one comes, then try and save that. Oh hell, tricky Rick and the others will be long gone by then.

They just can't leave the free market alone. God forbid we have something that works.

You better believe Wicomico County needs an inspection authority for taxis. It's long overdue.

I was in Annapolis and watched the Democrats refuse tax and regulate Uber, Lyft and BNB's. What a damn shame that all other businesses get taxed and regulated but these don't.
