New WOC Movie Theater Granted Beer, Wine Sales; No Drinking In Movies Will Be Permitted

BERLIN — In what will be a new concept for Worcester County, a movie theater in West Ocean City will include a small bar following approval from officials this week.

The Worcester County Board of License Commissioners (BLC) agreed to grant Flagship Premium Theaters a beer and wine license Wednesday. The license will allow the theater, which is expected to open May 15, to install a small bar in its lobby.

“This is a new concept for Worcester County, but I think you’ll find it’s a very benign concept,” said Joe Moore, the theater’s attorney.

Moore told the board that Flagship Premium Theaters, which will occupy the space previously occupied by Michaels in the White Marlin Mall, was seeking a beer and wine license to set up a modest bar in a portion of the theater’s lobby. The space, to be called the Pig and Whistle, would serve beer and wine as well as light fare. Moore said the company already had a Pig and Whistle bar in its Wareham, Mass., location and that it had been successful.

He stressed that patrons would not be able to take their alcoholic drinks into the theater.

If you can't take it into the movie then what is the point. No one would go to the movie theature just to buy a bag of popcorn and no one is going to go to get a beer that you have to miss your movie for. There was a place in Maine that did pizza, beer and movies and they did very well but the seating had small tables and you could take it into the theater.

Big deal; all of the Broadway theaters in New York City have bars in the lobby.

Thank you masters for letting us drink a beer at the movies.

When I was a young adult and seeing movies on the big screen I always used to stop at the liquor store and get a pint and stick it in my boot. Once at the theater would get a big drink with lots of ice and not filled to the top. In my seat I would combine the liquor and the drink and it would last me the whole movie.

Great idea...get all tanked up in the lobby and then enter the theater. How appropriate...just what we need...I don't see any problem here.

There are probably 10 places within a mile of the theater that you can buy alcohol. People can get tanked before they go in. Had either of you bothered to read the article it states there is a 2 drink limit.

I visited such a theater 40 years ago in Britain. The (full) bar opened before the film started and at the halfway break. Not only did we have drink holders at the seats, we had ash trays. People here are spoiled.

Gee Williams will be there if they have alcoholic beverages.

But they will allow the drunks to go in and watch a movie and run their drunken mouths and ruin the movie for others? I see fights coming up.
