Maryland mom tests positive for opiates after eating poppy seed bagel

A Maryland woman is blaming her false positive test for opiates on the breakfast she ate hours before giving birth.

Elizabeth Eden was in labor at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson last spring when doctors told her she tested positive for the drug. The new mother was shocked, especially when staff members told her she was being reported to the state.

"I was in labor. I was sitting in the bed. I was having contractions. I was on a Pitocin drip, and the doctor came in and said, 'You've tested positive for opiates,'" Eden described to WBAL-TV.

Same with poppy seed salad dressing. I've heard of people who get randomly drug tested for their job that won't eat it because it will show up positive.

I have heard this.
I had to take a drug test for a job application.
I told the nurse I had a poppy seed bagel, she laughed and said it would not affect the test and it didn't.

Like the Seinfeld episode where Elaine tested positive after eating poppy seed muffins! I don't buy it though. It would have to be an inordinate amount of poppy seeds, then refined into a highly potent amount of heroin-like substance.

Mythbusters says no. But I suppose if you ate enough of them, it might.

Yeah, I bet poppy seeds do it every time..............

Rarely. First, poppy seeds used in baking, etc. by companies have been washed beforehand. And the potency of the seeds individually and in a serving would be very low. This person may have been self-medicating and got caught.

Absolutely it happens all the time not.
