Rep. Harris Issues Statement on Farm Bill Passage

WASHINGTON, DC: On June 21, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2, the Agriculture and Nutrition Act (commonly known as the farm bill). Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) released the following statement in support of the bill’s passage:

“Today, the House of Representatives passed legislation to help struggling Americans get back on their feet. This bill enacts common-sense work requirements for the SNAP (food stamps) program. These work requirements will apply only to able-bodied adults between the ages of 18 and 49, and can be fulfilled through work, job training, education, and volunteerism. Americans most in need – the disabled, elderly, and parents of small children – will be exempt from these work requirements. For too long, federal assistance programs have been drained by waste, fraud and abuse. The passage of this bill is progress toward lifting Americans out of poverty, and prevents individuals from taking unfair advantage of the SNAP program.”
