Tens of thousands’ worth of bad food tossed


One of the first things personnel with the Matt Ortt Companies have had to do as they take over operations of the Ocean Pines yacht and beach clubs is dispose an excess of inventory, apparently bought at season’s end last year.

Making that job worse, much of the food stuffs went bad, exploded or became useless in some other way months ago.

Ralph DeAngelus, cofounder of the companies, addressed some of the inventory issues at last Thursday’s town hall meeting and added details in a phone interview last Friday.

“We’ve had to throw away about 150 cases of bottled sodas from the beach club basement that were left piled up there at the end of the summer, that froze and thawed and froze and exploded and thawed,” DeAngelus said.

He said about 100 cases of “bag in the boxes” flavors for soda fountain drinks worth about $6,500 also had to be thrown away.

This happens to more companies and places and has been going on for years. Just like when we buy more as individuals, we are a country of excess and not budgeting and buying our needs but our wants. It is a good lesson for all someone needs to be in charge and the pennies will become dollars.

Sounds to me like the former food and beverage manager might have been getting a little Kickback from some of these companies.

Not exactly. When we move to the shore, we did some research and ended up in DE. MD was out. Then Ocean Pines was out. Far too many fingers in the till from our perspective. I mean, why order a bunch of supplies at the end of the season whey you are getting the most free dinners then? One would expect the people managing the place to understand the freezing effect of cold weather storage. They didn't care. suckers.
