Wind Turbine Removed At Chesapeake College

As most of you know, I took an unusual break from SBYNews yesterday where I attended a Family Reunion. While heading west on Rt. 50 I got to the Chesapeake College area and thought, where the hell is that huge turbine, it's gone! Come to find out, it broke and they simply took it down.

It's no wonder the Liberal media kept their mouths shut, it was BS to start with and yet Idiots like Worcester County representatives want to allow off shore turbines that, (when you do the research) aren't worth a crap. It's OK, we used other peoples money, right Libs?

So a friend did some research for me while I was away and here's what they came up with...

Chesapeake’s wind turbine, installed in 2011, marked the beginning of the college’s sustainability efforts and energy-savings measures on campus that now include solar energy.

In February, the turbine’s generator suffered catastrophic failure. Most likely caused by a power surge, repair estimates are between $20,000 and $25,000.

“The turbine was a catalyst in creating a culture of energy conservation at Chesapeake,” Bounds said. “But we determined that the repair cost was too expensive and our resources could more effectively be invested in solar power, which will result in greater energy savings on campus.”

This one’s a doozy, LOL!

If you’ve driven Rt. 50 on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, you’ve no doubt seen it. Towering high above the fields north of Easton, the white, three-bladed wind turbine marks the site of the Wye Mills campus of Chesapeake College. The 50 kW wind turbinewas erected in 2011 and generates enough power to save the regional community college $12,000 – $15,000 a year.

The Star Democrat
The college also is generating some of its own electricity, thanks to the wind turbine that is positioned just off U.S. Route 50 and came online in 2011. The wind turbine generates about 20 percent of the electricity used by the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center located on the Wye Mills Campus, according to Plutschak.

12) Is the wind turbine you erected on campus and/or part of your insurance program – we have seen solar projects with other institutions where they work with a for profit company to engage in this alternative energy source, so any details like that would be great. The wind turbine is currently under an operating lease. The lease will be ending in FY2018 and the college anticipates opting into the buyout option at the end of the lease.

Real-world evidence of this exists with a wind turbine located along Route 50 on the campus of Chesapeake College. Based upon the college’s own production figures, electricity from this turbine costs 30 cents per kilowatt hour, approximately three times the current average residential and commercial rate.

They get money to put that crap up to push the green agenda where they have their money invested.

Thank you Joe! I also noticed that Martin OweMalley's middle finger to the Eastern Shore was gone - good riddance!

If the windmill was really saving them $12,000 to $15,000 a year, coupled with the savings of not dismantling and disposing of it, there is no way they take it down.We don't need a calculator to do the math.

They have recently erected a large solar array when they did the health sciences and gym building. I believe they are probably making out better. Any alternative has to help. Considering the prices Delmarva power charges I would as well. I recently
Switched to another utility with a move and my electric went in over half for a house almost 700 more sq ft. It’s a good thing

Thanks sbynews. This is a real piece of investigative journalism.

There are enormous tax credits up front for companies that construct these "green" energy sources. They abscond with these spoils and the taxpayers get to hold the bag.

Listen up Snowflakes. This is a classic example of what happens when the government picks winners and losers.

I haven't heard how much that monster in Crisfield has saved the city. My guess is "nothing". If it was a success we would be hearing all the bragging about it. Another Obama failure!

SUSTAINABILITY LOL "Chesapeake’s wind turbine, installed in 2011, marked the beginning of the college’s sustainability efforts and energy-savings measures on campus that now include solar energy."

Umm did you not also notice the new solar panels or does that not fit your narrative either?

Summary: Cost to fix it would exceed one year's worth of savings it generated. Not mentioned was how much it cost to take down and cart away.

I've seen articles where large numbers of windmills in the ocean in northern Europe have simply been abandoned.

There is nothing wrong with wind power, per se; it just isn't worth subsidizing since it seems proponents consciously fail to incorporate maintenance costs in their projections and sales pitch.

OC, and Gov. Hogan, take note.

I don't believe that it generates and saves the college $13,000 per year. If that were the case, the repairs would pay for themselves in less than 2 years and so would be cost-effective.

I'm willing to bet that it didn't save the college 12-15K like claimed. I commuted past it twice weekly for 6 months. Saw it doing it's job a handful of times. Doesn't add up. If it actually saved the amount claimed, it'd be easy to financially justify fixing it.

Taxpayers are paying for this garbage.

That's why developers peddle to schools and governments.

The turbine in Crisfield produces $6000 per month and cost $4,200,000. O&M costs are estimated to average $12,000 annually but the actual amount is unknown. Taxpayers are paying for ALL of it. The developer said it would save the city $250,000 per year but real production numbers show $61,000(at best)! What a scam. After 2 years it is no longer under warranty and it will break...just like Chesapeake College. The crane costs $100,000 to get on sight so it will not be fixed. The Crisfield turbine is a one of a kind stand alone unit that have an average life span of 6 years or less. If it operates this long, it will contribute $360,000 for an upfront investment of $4.2 million.

Did it actually break? Or is that fake news as a reason to get rid of a white elephant?

I remember when it was windy outside, the turbine didn't move. No wind (very hot day) that turbine was a humming. $25K eh? I'm surprise a lib tree hugger green space didn't pony up that amount for recognition. Chesapeake missed out not paying for the repairs to keep the fake news going for many more years....OR better yet, having college students at the light on Route 50 with buckets for donations during the weekend (both east/west side of the highway). Traffic backs up there anyways!

Missed opportunity!

Thanks, 11:43, for that input, information on installed turbine costs is extremely hard to find, probably because they're all put up with OPM, or Other Peoples' Money.

BTW, the quoted texts I put in there comes from the link directly above the text. My spacing skills need work!

Oh, and be sure to check out my last link on the 4 at Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL. They only lasted 4 years as well.

I had thought about erecting one of these money makers in my back yard. Instead I will start a foundation like The Fat Failed candidate did. All you need is a mailing address and I already have that. Get the word out and go to my mailbox daily and listen to the rustling of dollar bills.

By now there should be some success stories out there to sell more wind turbines.

But there's not.

the college doesn`t care they didn`t lose any money or any employee bonuses, the cost of their failed experiment in windpower was passed onto the students in the form of higher tuitions and passed on to the taxpayers.

Umm did you not notice the solar panels were not free and have not ever been proven to pay for themselves.
