Dylann Roof, 22, has been sentenced to death for killing nine black churchgoers during a Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina.
The jury's decision had to be unanimous to sentence Roof to death. This is the first time a death penalty verdict was rendered in a federal hate crimes case, the Justice Department said.
The jury began deliberating Roof's fate earlier today, after Roof told the jury in a closing statement, "I still feel like I had to do it."
The verdict comes at the end of the federal death penalty case in which he was convicted of hate crimes resulting in death, among other charges. Roof also faces a state trial in which he may again face the death penalty.
Melvin Graham, brother of slain churchgoer Cynthia Hurd, said after the sentence was read, "Today we had justice for my sister."

I wonder what the Black guy will get that went into a white church a couple of months ago and killed white people will get ?.
And why does it have to be a color issue? "Killing nine black churchgoers" I don't recall hearing twenty six mostly white churchgoers were killed in TX, no matter what flavor the shooter was. Do you really think the family of victims are thinking my white or black relative was murdered?
The black guy who shot the white people in a church was not even charged with a hate crime so I'm sure he won't get the death penalty.

951 you couldn't be more wrong if you tried. The federal system has a cap on appeals. Once they're all exhausted the date and time are set. Unless he gets a governor's stay, he'll go down. They are making an 'example' of him so they'll let it roll. You really should study up on federal law and punishment before making such ridiculous statements. Have a nice day. :)

Good, unfortunately the expense for appeals probably could feed many lower world nations!
Now he gets to sit on death row for 20 years worth of appeals under tax payer expenses. After 20 years, the system will left him go free due some judicial error technology. Where is the justice in that.
