Breaking News: The Keystone pipeline spilled 210,000 gallons of oil in South Dakota, days before Nebraska will decide on permits for the Keystone XL line

More than 5,000 barrels of oil spilled from the Keystone pipeline on Thursday in South Dakota, sending cleanup crews and emergency workers to the remote northeast portion of the state.
The spill of more than 210,000 gallons, near Amherst, S.D., comes just days before regulators in neighboring Nebraska decide whether to grant the final permit needed for construction to begin on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would be operated by the same company. An announcement in Nebraska is expected on Monday.

How does oil(spill)? Did a weld break or did someone open a valve that they shouldn't have,I just don't understand how this could happen if the pipe line was designed with a real high safety factor. It seems to me that it is human error and should be avoidable. Maybe it's just me but I think all pipe lines should be above ground so they could be inspected on a regular basis.

Anybody ever watch the aftermath of the bombing of Pearl Harbor? All that oil dumped into the pristine waters of Hawaii. Seems to be ok now. Maybe nature has a way to deal with a substances that naturally occurs on earth.
