BALTIMORE (WJZ) — After less than a year, Baltimore’s Bike Share program is taking a break.
The Baltimore Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that it will be suspending the program for maintenance and upgrades.
Several bikes from the program have been stolen, and DOT says better locks will be installed on the bikes to prevent theft.
Two-hundred brand new bikes rolled out last year and many are nowhere to be found.

Just shows the moral difference of Europe and the USA.
Can't say that we didn't see this one coming...
Hmmm let's see how can we make a bunch of bikes get stolen??? I know! Put them out on the streets with minimal security locks in crime ridden Baltimore. Haha I am a genius!
Idiots should have put GPS on every bike then they could track them. That cost would probably be less than the cost of the thefts. Everybody knows these type of programs including MDOT is a tax dollar hole that never covers expenses.
there isn't a program anywhere in Maryland that isn't abused to the point where it should be scrapped and it's because of incompetent program managers at every level
What do you expect in the ghetto
What did you expect in a city of professional looters and thieves.
They were real clunkers too you could get killed trying to ride in traffic.
The program costs Baltimore 2.5 million for 200 bikes, that= $12,500 per bike. If you went to Walmart you could buy 31 thousand bikes @ $80.00 per bike.
Yes - I did laugh out loud on this one - literally!!
Sold to metal recyclers as scrap metal. Money used to buy drugs.
bike share ? I've shared a few biker chic's but never bikes.
"Investigators noted a spike in spray paint sales as the bikes disappeared."
In a city where your car window WILL get smashed into if there's so much as a pack of smokes - not to mention a radio - visible in the car, who's brilliant idea was it to put (basically) "free" bikes out on the street?
It's like throwing a hunk of meat to the lions and hoping they won't eat it.
(They say in Baltimore, BMW means "Break My Window".)

You mean a spike in spray paint can thefts
I think they should make them 40 pounds heavier. They look like they only weigh 120 pounds.

Why don't you just hand them the GPS? You don't think they would steal them too?
