10:11pm, I don't understand, why are you "SMH at MSP?" What did MSP do wrong in this press release? Please enlighten us oh wizard of intelligence.

1:15am, yes, it was necessary. Impatience is what killed him. Maybe it will teach others to be more patient. If he wasn't in such a hurry to get ahead of others, who were legitimately slowing TO MAKE A LEGAL TURN, he would still be alive today!!

Oh, my bad. I didn't realize you were there.

Oh how I love all these armchair motorcyclist!

Maybe, like so many other rude and careless drivers that I see on the road every day, the left turning vehicle appeared to be slowing for no reason (no turn signal), and that's why the biker attempted to pass. See the no turn signal thing all the time. If that's the case in this accident, that pickup driver cost that old man his life by not signaling his intention. The goes beyond lazy and rude.

I think it has yet to be determined if it was a "legal" turn. Failing to use the turn signal would make it an ILLEGAL turn, and could be why the cyclist was attempting to pass the slowing traffic. I think we'll have to see the results of the investigation before we'll know whether that turn was legal. If the truck failed to use his turn signal, he could be cited, and would be a contributor to the accident, and subsequently the motorcyclist's death. You can bet the MSP accident reconstruction team is looking closely at any evidence of turn signal use.
