Gov. Cuomo’s much-heralded new program for free tuition at state colleges comes with a huge catch — you have to sign years of your life away to get it.
Under a provision that was added to the tuition bill at the last moment, students who get a free ride at CUNY and SUNY schools must live and work in New York state for up to four years after graduation, or be forced to pay the money back.
The amendment — which was not part of Cuomo’s original offer of free college for middle- class students — was added at the insistence of Republicans in the state Senate.

Maryland had this program for teachers back in the late '60s and '70's, That is how I went to school, you signed a contract to teach for the first two years after graduation in Maryland system and got free tuition for four years. Ultimately I did not teach so guess what I paid it back. I treasure the education I got and had no problem meeting the terms of the contract that I voluntarily signed. What is the big deal??

Good idea actually, we did it many many decades ago. Really don't know why it was stopped.

Seems like something this area could use. First thing you do after college was go seek jobs that were available, the vast majority being far from here.
we need it for health care workers on the shore.
We can't get doctors to come here, so why not have them start here and work here.
