A cup of tea a day keeps dementia at bay, according to a recent study by the National University of Singapore.
The study was published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Ageing and determined that drinking tea every day reduces the risk of cognitive impairment in older people by 50 per cent.
For those who are genetically predisposed to Alzheimer's, a cup of tea daily can reduce the risk by as much as 86 per cent.
The study was led by Assistant Professor Feng Lei who, along with his team, studied 957 Chinese people aged 55 or older over two years.
Assistant Professor Feng said the results could apply to people of all ethnicities.
'The data from our study suggests that a simple and inexpensive lifestyle measure such as daily tea drinking can reduce a person's risk of developing neurocognitive disorders in late life,' Assistant Professor Feng told Nine Coach.
Assistant Professor Feng said pharmacological therapy for dementia is 'elusive' and the results are far from being satisfactory yet.
