Maryland, Virginia add nearly 100K jobs in last year

WASHINGTON — Unemployment rates in Maryland and Virginia held steady in January, and the two states have added almost 100,000 jobs combined in the last year.

The unemployment rate in Maryland in January was 4.2 percent, unchanged from December and down from 4.6 percent a year earlier, according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Virginia’s unemployment rate in January was 4.0 percent, unchanged from both December and January 2016.

Virginia has added 56,000 jobs in the past 12 months, a growth rate of 1.4 percent, while Maryland has added 40,000 jobs, a growth rate of 1.5 percent.
