A colleague nominated Hawkins after witnessing this act of kindness:
“On her day off, Kirsten came into the hospital with a big bag with tissue paper that looked like a birthday present,” her coworker said. “When I asked her who it was for, she said ‘a patient.’ After she came out of the patient's room, I asked if she knew the patient personally, and she said that she did not and she just wanted to bring him something nice.
"Later that day, I spoke with the patient in passing. He shared with me that he was homeless, living in his car and Kirsten had brought him clothes since he didn't have much. He was very grateful for the gift. This act goes above and beyond her nursing duties. Not only did she bring the patient clothes, she wrapped them and presented them in a way that brought him dignity.”
For demonstrating true compassion, Hawkins was honored with the Daisy Award in a ceremony before her colleagues. She received a certificate commending her for being an extraordinary nurse. The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” She was also presented with fresh flowers on behalf of the Peninsula Regional Medical staff, and a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. We need more medical staff like this. I try not to go to PRMC ER because of the Doctors / PAs. These that diagnose makes the nurses look really bad and IMO disrespects the nurses bed side manner.

Very thoughtful. When nominated for an award by your peers is something special.
You should stick to the local shaman or witch doctor if you don't like the doctors that have devoted years of training to heal you.
