A Viewer Writes: Local Sears Experience
Joe, this morning I read that Sears is really having financial issues,so let me tell you of an incident I had yesterday. I went into Sears at the Salisbury Mall and was interested in a mower which was approx. $3000 - 4000 dollars. I asked if they offered delivery{about 4 miles away} they said it would be 69.00. So I went somewhere else and believe it or not they would have no problem delivering this to my home. So as a businessman I thought I would tell them what I thought, cause I really like Sears and would hate to see them leave. After talking to at least 3 people to get to the right person, I was amazed at their smugness and rude manner. My last question I asked was - You really don't care and this went on deaf ears didn't it. The rude lady said emphatically, YEP.

Why would anybody go to sears to buy a mower? Not being mean, but you must be older. The people working there are no different than the employees at McDonalds. Not stakeholders in the business and don't GAF.
And that is why Americans will lose jobs and then complain. The pride is gone.
Sounds like the typical employee, no loyalty or pride in their job or for the benefits they receive from the employer.....waiting to be able to go for unemployment!!!
You can thank Eddie Lampert.
They're dead. Along with Bookstores; Video Stores; Taxi Services; and many more brick-and-mortar businesses,
Sears management failed to see the light - The light emitting from Amazon.
All my experiences at Sears have been positive.
They have always been this way. Even when I have purchased appliances. The Furniture stores are no different. I shop in Delaware and both Furniture Land and Janosic charge a fee to deliver, but if you take it home yourself, there is no fee. I agree the delivery charge is outrageous if you are within five miles of home. A lot of places in the past offered free delivery. I bought a motorcycle from Diamond Motors sports in Dover, and they delivered my Bike to my Salisbury address free of charge, but this was back in 2004. Not sure if they would do this now.
Wow she will be real rude when sears closes up.
Most retail employees know nothing about the merchandise they sell. They are only there to collect a paycheck. They also know nothing about customer service or how to talk to the public. And these stores wonder why people walk out and buy nothing.
That wall is going to keep us from running to Mexico, because this country is ruined... and no one cares.
Same attitude everywhere it seems. Went into the eyeglass place in front of Bed Bath and Beyond and I was told flat out that I would not be helped without a prescription. I looked around and left....then went to the eyeglass place across from the Acme (old Giant) and a woman offered to help and then just disappeared in the back of the store and never returned. People just don't care. It isn't their store and they get paid anyway...so why be helpful?
More of the entitlement mentality. Even though the person entering the store is a customer, the clerks mindset is that you "owe them".
Thank you local progressive for that.
When all an employee hears is that they're going out of business, and they are all going to lose their jobs, I can see why they "just don't care" about the customers. The could kiss every customer's butt, and it wouldn't matter. They will still lose their jobs.
I worked at Sears 7 years ago. If you were buying a 3000 to 4000 dollar mower from me you know damn well I would have made sure a 69 dollar delivery charge would not have gotten in the way of the sale. Someone posted that they (the employees) dont give a F... I am sure they do as most employees are commision based.
I wonder how long Best Buy will be here in Salisbury? I see them going the same way as Circuit City and Radio Shack. Too easy to get what you want online and have next day delivery. HH Greg store in Annapolis is closing as well.
Similar to Best Buy in their product line. If a prosperous city like Annapolis can loose a store like this, I don't look for many retail stores to stay in Salisbury. Like JcPenney, they will be centralized in a larger market like Dover or Annapolis. I think maybe the old fashioned catalog stores might make a comeback in the future for small towns. Order what you want online, and pick it up at a catalog store location. My wife did this at JcPenney for years.
If you went to Lens Crafters just outside of Boscov's, you would get service with or without a prescription. They are great!
One of the best things about amazon other than the cost is not having to deal with an idiot salesperson.
The lady's bad attitude may be a result of knowing she will soon not have a job, as it is ALL Sears stores are closing. I remember looking forward to their Christmas catalogs every year and picking out what I wanted Santa to bring. The catalog was ragged by the time Christmas came around. Sears was located on South Salisbury Boulevard then.
3:16 You are correct...they are great!!
I was amused that you can get a riding lawnmower shipped 2 days free with Amazon prime.
Well if commenter lives all that close to the Salisbury Sears store, then why doesn't he just fire up the 'bitch' and drive it home from the Sears store parking lot.
Remember - it's not how fast you mow - but how well your mow fast!
You need a prescription to buy prescription glasses or contacts! If you don't have one make an appointment for an exam. Boom problem solved.
I find it hard to believe an employee didn't want the commissions from that sale. I know a guy that works in that department and he's very knowledgeable about the products. As a matter of fact we just bought a craftsmen string trimmer last weekend and ordered a craftsmen chainsaw to be shipped to the store. We picked that up yesterday. Every step of the way the employees were extremely friendly and helpful. We saved fourty dollars with shop your way rewards alone. The 2 employees at the counter seemed just as excited as us about the savings. Mind you the price was already great.
I have over 20 years of retail experience. When our house had finally reached the point we needed appliances I went and researched as much as I could on washer, dryer and refrigerator going through all this I went to Sears and the young saleman was excellent, polite, very open and honest. His ability impressed us so much we purchased all three appliances and scheduled the deliver for three weeks. Everything was set then three days before delivery the delivery service called and rescheduled. A day off was rescheduled and then on day before the delivery they called again and said they couldn't make it. I ended up with a supervisor who told me that "no going to work is no big deal". I cancelled the order and was called back and said that I could have a $20.00 credit Woopie. I tried calling a Regional Manager that doesn't exist and the Salisbury Manager was useless telling me they subcontract it isn't their responsibility. My family's history of generations with Craftsmen Tools and countless other items ended last October and will not be rekindled. Very sad but not overly surprising.
I will never buy any equipment from a big box outlet because the service stinks I'll buy a mower from Atlantic tractor.
The problem in dealing w/ Sears is that every time I check out at the register - the receipts are 10 pages long. They waste an entire roll of receipt paper for every transaction.
My understanding with buying appliances at Sears, is that they outsource their deliveries. They are not Sears employees, so who knows what kind of person is coming into your house and they only deliver, do not do any installation. That's why we shop at Shore Appliances. Yes, there is a delivery charge, but it is one of their employees who delivers and installs. And the salespeople actually act like they care, unlike Sears.
I recently had a bad experience with Sears after buying a dishwasher from them. Was told it would be installed in 9 days and ended up being 24 days. I called multiple times and was told they didn't have any idea when it would be delivered to the warehouse. Their responses to me as the customer was very poor.
