EPA Says it Can't Pay Economic Damages From Mine Spill

The Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday it will not repay claims totaling more than $1.2 billion for economic damages from a mine waste spill the agency accidentally triggered in Colorado, saying the law prohibits it.

The EPA said the claims could be refiled in federal court, or Congress could authorize payments.

But attorneys for the EPA and the Justice Department concluded the EPA is barred from paying the claims because of sovereign immunity, which prohibits most lawsuits against the government.

"The agency worked hard to find a way in which it could pay individuals for damages due to the incident, but unfortunately, our hands are tied," EPA spokeswoman Nancy Grantham said.

Joe this area from Durango,CO up to Ouray,CO is along Highway 550 The "Million Dollar Highway" due to the numbers of "Million Dollar Views" many of which are of this waterway and it's been a rough time for those that love this area! Nature is doing a great job and you should take the family out and ride the Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railroad the views are spectacular and you will love it!

Yes. What the EPA routinely does is settle very easily winnable lawsuits brought by environmental groups like Greenpeace.
The EPA basically throws the legal case on purpose to funnel money to these rent seeking groups

Typical government, they screw something up royally and then claim some legal crap making them not responsible and wonder why "we the people" never want to trust them.

This is crazy. No one is above the law. Shut down the EPA and sell off the assets to pay the people who have been affected.
