Congress rebukes Obama, rejects his 9/11 lawsuit veto

President Obama lost his first veto fight with Congress on Wednesday after Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate voted overwhelmingly to override his objection to a bill that would allow families of the Americans killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to sue the government of Saudi Arabia.

The bipartisan vote came despite lobbying from Obama to uphold his veto. Obama said he objects to the bill because it could damage U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia and could undermine America's own sovereign immunity against lawsuits.

The Senate voted 97-1 to override Obama's veto, and the only "no" vote was from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

The House voted a few hours later and was also able to get the two-thirds vote needed to override Obama's veto, handing Obama his first, and likely his only, veto override in the nearly eight years he's been in office.

Why should it not be overridden? Everybody is allowed to sue the US for frivolous things such as "I am owed because of my family was a slave in the 1700". Any Foreign person, including Saudi's, is allowed to sue the US over anything. Americans sue the US for things they are not liable for. Why should an American not be able to sue other Countries government? They don't like being sued and retaliate then pull all troops and equipment out. Let Americans travel / conduct business at their own risk to these Countries.

Better be glad we are going to take legal action, and not military action!

You're right it is about time, it's hard to believe that this is the first overridden veto in Obama's 8 years as president Congress has no balls whatsoever and has not had them for 8 years

This will open the door for citizens of other countries to sue the US government as well as private companies for, I don't know, us killing their families in drone strikes, things along that nature. If you'd all get your head out of your butts you'd realize that was the reason for his veto. What Senator or Representative in their right mind would go against 9/11 victims families when they need to be re-elected? Think people.
