It's just what comes afterwards that is painful for a long, long, long time.
The first episode of M.A.S.H. played the song, complete with lyrics, at the beginning of the show. The lyrics were subsequently dropped and only the music was played at the beginning of each episode.
They sang the song in the MASH movie when the dentist "painless" wanted to commit suicide because he thought that he was gay and would not be able to enjoy women anymore.
Never knew this.
Does Hollywood encourage suicide?
